Chapter 7 - The Severing Attempt

The guild was quieter than usual.

Not silent.

But watchful.

Repairs were underway across Magnolia. The Ashen Covenant's attack had left damage—but more than that, it had left tension.

Kael stood near the request board, staring without reading.

"They hit you directly," said Gray Fullbuster, arms folded. "That wasn't random."

"No," Kael replied.

From across the hall, Natsu Dragneel slammed down a mug.

"Good! That means next time we hit them back."

Kael didn't respond.

Because something felt wrong.

Not outside.

Inside.

His shadow had been unusually still all morning.

Too still.

Then—

The guild doors burst open.

A messenger stumbled in, bleeding from the forehead.

"Hosenka Village—" he gasped. "It's under attack again!"

Kael moved instantly.

Smoke rose into the sky before they even reached the outskirts.

But this time—

There were no scattered constructs.

No random destruction.

The attack was precise.

A ring of civilians had been driven into the center of the village square.

And at the edge of that circle stood a single woman in black robes.

Calm.

Composed.

White hair tied behind her back.

A crimson sigil glowed faintly at her throat.

She smiled when Kael arrived.

"Devil Slayer," she greeted.

Gray's breath frosted immediately.

Natsu's flames ignited.

"Let them go," Kael said.

The woman tilted her head.

"Phase Three is not about combat."

She raised one hand.

The villagers screamed as shadow threads tightened around them—not crushing, just threatening.

"It is about pressure."

Natsu stepped forward.

"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!"

He lunged—

The woman snapped her fingers.

A wall of dark glass erupted between them.

His fist shattered part of it—but not fully.

Gray reacted.

"Ice-Make: Hammer!"

He smashed the barrier from the side, cracking it further.

The woman didn't move.

"Predictable," she said softly.

Kael stepped ahead of both of them.

"They want me unstable," he realized aloud.

The woman smiled faintly.

"Very good."

Shadow constructs rose from the ground—not attacking Natsu or Gray.

Attacking civilians.

Natsu didn't hesitate.

He spun, intercepting two at once.

"Fire Dragon's Wing Attack!"

Flames carved through the constructs before they could reach their targets.

Gray froze another mid-strike.

"Ice-Make: Prison!"

A cage of ice locked it in place.

Kael's shadow surged forward.

"Shadow Devil's Sever."

His strike sliced through multiple threads at once, freeing villagers without harming them.

But the woman's eyes sharpened.

"Containment pressure at seventy percent," she murmured to herself.

Kael felt it then.

The threads weren't meant to kill.

They were syncing.

Matching his shadow's frequency.

"You're studying my emotional response," Kael said coldly.

"Correct."

The civilians screamed again as the threads tightened slightly.

Not enough to kill.

Enough to provoke.

Natsu growled. "I'm done playing!"

He inhaled deeply—

Flames spiraled violently.

"Fire Dragon's Roar!"

The blast tore through half the constructs and shattered the remaining barrier.

Gray followed immediately.

"Ice-Make: Lance Barrage!"

Dozens of spears launched toward the robed woman.

She stepped back—

And vanished into shadow.

Kael's instincts flared.

Behind him.

He turned—

Too slow.

A palm pressed against his chest.

Dark energy surged directly into him.

Not destructive.

Stimulating.

His shadow exploded outward instinctively, knocking Natsu and Gray backward.

The villagers fell free as threads dissolved.

"Data spike achieved," the woman said calmly, reappearing several steps away.

Kael dropped to one knee.

His shadow writhed violently around him.

Not uncontrolled—

But angry.

Natsu scrambled up. "Kael!"

Gray grabbed his shoulder. "Don't touch him yet!"

The woman observed closely.

"Your bonds suppress your evolution," she said. "Pain accelerates it."

Kael lifted his head slowly.

His eyes darkened—not glowing, but deepened.

"You misunderstand something," he said quietly.

The woman paused.

Kael stood.

The writhing shadow steadied—not because he forced it.

Because he centered it.

"You think they restrain me," Kael continued.

His shadow condensed around his arms smoothly.

"They anchor me."

The woman's expression shifted—first time uncertainty appeared.

Kael stepped forward.

"Shadow Devil's Dominion."

The ground darkened beneath them—but this time, it did not spread wildly.

It formed a precise sphere around only the woman.

Cutting her off from retreat.

Gray smirked slightly. "That's new."

Natsu grinned. "I like it."

The woman attempted to phase—

But the sphere held.

Kael moved through the darkness like silent wind.

"Shadow Devil's Execution."

A clean, controlled strike pierced through her defensive sigils.

She staggered—but did not collapse.

Instead, she laughed softly.

"Phase Three complete," she whispered.

Her body dissolved into ash-like particles.

The sphere faded.

The village fell quiet.

Natsu exhaled sharply. "Okay, I officially hate them."

Gray helped villagers to their feet.

"They weren't trying to win again," he said.

"No," Kael replied.

"They were measuring how far I'd go to protect."

His shadow rested calmly now.

No instability.

No surge.

Because Natsu and Gray had been there.

Not restraining him.

Fighting beside him.

High above the clouds, unseen figures recorded the outcome.

"Emotional destabilization attempt failed."

A deeper voice responded:

"Then escalate."

Kael stared at the fading ash where the woman had stood.

"They won't stop."

Natsu cracked his knuckles again. "Good."

Gray's eyes hardened.

"Next time, we make sure they don't leave."

Kael looked at both of them.

Fire.

Ice.

Shadow.

Not opposites.

A balance.

And the Ashen Covenant had just realized—

Severing that balance would not be easy.
