Chapter 67 - Shifting sides

The penthouse was silent except for the rain against the windows.

Anna stood near the bar, arms crossed tightly, trying to process everything that had happened in a single day. Secrets buried for years. Betrayals hidden in plain sight. Veronica gone. Ethan somewhere in the city with a woman who had used him like a weapon.

Oliver was already on the phone again, issuing orders with calm precision.

"Find every warehouse, hotel, and property connected to Ethan Mitchell."

A pause.

"No mistakes."

He ended the call and looked at Anna.

"You should stay here tonight."

Anna gave him a flat look. "You know I'm not going to do that."

"This could turn violent."

"So could my patience."

Despite everything, a faint shadow of a smile touched his mouth.

Then it disappeared.

"I mean it, Anna."

"And I mean it too," she said, stepping closer. "No more shutting me out."

Their eyes locked.

This time, Oliver nodded.

"Fine," he said quietly. "Then you stay with me."

Across the city, in an abandoned office building Ethan had recently acquired, Veronica sat in a chair, hands untied but watched.

Ethan stood by the window, jaw clenched, fury simmering beneath stillness.

"You lied to me," he said.

Veronica looked almost amused.

"I guided you."

"You used me."

"You were useful."

The words nearly snapped the last thread of his control.

He turned sharply. "My father died in an accident."

"Yes."

"You knew."

"Yes."

"And you let me believe Oliver murdered him."

Veronica's smile thinned.

"I let you believe what you wanted to believe."

Ethan's breathing grew heavier.

"For ten years."

"You needed someone to hate," she replied coolly. "I needed someone willing to move."

He stepped closer, voice low and dangerous.

"You ruined my life twice."

Veronica tilted her head. "No, Ethan. Your obsession did."

For the first time in years, he had no answer.

Because some part of her was right.

Back at the penthouse, Anna watched Oliver review files spread across the dining table.

"You haven't stopped for hours," she said.

"I stop when this ends."

She walked behind him, reading over his shoulder.

"These are Veronica's transfers?"

"Yes. Shell accounts. Fake vendors. Media contacts."

Anna frowned. "She planned this carefully."

Oliver glanced up at her. "She planned it for years."

Anna was quiet for a moment.

Then—

"What if Ethan doesn't know what to do now?"

Oliver's expression hardened. "He'll choose."

"Between revenge and truth."

"Yes."

Anna looked toward the dark city outside.

"And if he chooses revenge?"

Oliver stood slowly.

"Then I finish what he started."

Anna stepped in front of him.

"No."

His eyes narrowed slightly. "No?"

"No more men destroying everything because of pride."

"Anna—"

"I'm serious."

She held his gaze.

"If there's still something human left in Ethan, let him choose it."

For a moment, Oliver said nothing.

Then he lifted a hand and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentler than his expression.

"You ask impossible things."

"And yet you still listen."

A pause.

"Sometimes," he admitted.

At that same moment, Ethan's phone lit up.

A message from an unknown number.

She told you one truth. Want the last one? Meet me alone.

His eyes darkened.

Veronica noticed.

"What now?"

Ethan looked at her coldly.

"Apparently," he said, slipping the phone into his pocket, "there's one more player in this game."

For the first time, Veronica looked uncertain.

And far away, someone watched all of them move exactly where they were meant to.

The real mastermind had never stepped into the light.
