Morning broke without warmth.
The city moved like any other day—traffic, meetings, headlines, people chasing normal lives.
But for Anna, Oliver, and Ethan, nothing was normal anymore.
Anna stood in the penthouse kitchen, staring at untouched coffee while Oliver adjusted his cufflinks near the window.
"You didn't sleep," she said.
"Neither did you."
"I asked first."
Oliver glanced at her. "Then no."
She walked closer.
"You're going after Ethan."
"I'm finding him before someone else does."
Anna's chest tightened. "The unknown number."
"Yes."
"And if it's a trap?"
Oliver's expression stayed calm.
"Then I'll be there first."
Anna hated how easily he said things like that.
She reached for his wrist before he could turn away.
"Come back."
His eyes softened slightly.
"I always do."
Across the city, Ethan arrived at an old riverside warehouse.
Empty.
Silent.
Too silent.
He stepped inside cautiously.
"Show yourself," he called.
A slow clap echoed from the shadows.
Then a man stepped forward in an expensive coat, older, polished, and smiling like he had been waiting years for this moment.
Ethan froze.
"Mr. Hale."
Richard Hale.
Former senior advisor to Ethan's father.
Trusted family friend.
Dead, as far as Ethan knew.
"You look disappointed," Hale said pleasantly.
"You disappeared after the collapse."
"I adapted."
Ethan's jaw tightened. "What do you want?"
"The truth," Hale said. "And perhaps gratitude."
Minutes later, Oliver's car screeched to a stop outside the warehouse.
Anna had refused to stay behind.
Now she stood beside him as he scanned the entrance.
"You said stay with you," she reminded him when he looked annoyed.
"I also said this could be dangerous."
"And I said I'm done being protected from reality."
He exhaled once.
"Stay behind me."
"Not likely."
Despite the tension, a faint look passed through his eyes that almost resembled pride.
Then they entered.
Inside, Ethan stood rigid while Hale circled him slowly.
"Your father was brilliant," Hale said. "But emotional. Weak where it mattered."
"Careful," Ethan said quietly.
Hale smiled.
"He trusted people. Especially me."
Anna and Oliver stepped in just as the words landed.
All eyes turned.
Oliver's expression became ice.
"Richard."
Hale laughed softly. "Still dramatic."
Anna looked between them. "You know him?"
Oliver's jaw tightened. "Too well."
Hale spread his arms.
"Wonderful. Everyone together."
Ethan stared at Oliver. "You knew he was alive?"
"I suspected recently," Oliver said. "Not before."
Hale clicked his tongue. "Always so serious."
Anna stepped forward. "Start talking."
He looked delighted.
"Gladly."
He turned to Ethan.
"I advised your father to expand too quickly."
Then to Oliver.
"I advised your board to pull support."
Then back to Anna.
"I leaked the first rumors that caused panic."
Silence hit like thunder.
Ethan's face drained of color.
"You destroyed my father."
"I profited from transition," Hale corrected.
Oliver moved a step forward, dangerous calm radiating from him.
"You started a corporate war."
"I started opportunity."
Anna's fists clenched.
"And the messages?"
Hale smiled at her.
"A little pressure keeps people predictable."
Ethan looked shattered.
"For ten years…" he whispered.
"You needed someone to blame," Hale replied. "Oliver was convenient."
Oliver's eyes never left Hale.
"You manipulated everyone."
"Of course," Hale said lightly. "And Veronica was useful until she became emotional."
Anna's heart pounded.
"Where is she?"
Hale's smile thinned.
"Somewhere reconsidering her loyalty."
Before anyone could react, footsteps sounded above them.
Armed security appeared on the upper level.
Oliver instantly moved in front of Anna.
Ethan stepped beside them without thinking.
The shift wasn't lost on anyone.
Former enemies.
Same side.
Hale smiled wider.
"Now," he said, "we discuss leverage."
Oliver's voice was low and lethal.
"You miscalculated."
"Oh?"
Oliver glanced once at Anna, then at Ethan.
"You made us stop fighting each other."
For the first time, Hale's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Because now the people he had broken apart were standing together.
