Chapter 27 - Static in the Signal

The car sat parked beneath an overpass, engine idling low.

City noise echoed above them — tires humming, metal rattling, life moving like nothing had changed. But inside the car, everything felt heavier.

Naomi turned the flash drive over in her fingers.

"This is what they're really after," she murmured.

Keene nodded, pulling a small laptop from the backseat.

"We take one look," he said. "If it's dirty, we shut it down."

She slid the drive into the port.

The screen flickered.

One folder opened automatically.

BLUEPRINT_02

Naomi's breath slowed.

Inside were maps layered over maps — freight lines, surveillance blind spots, names tied to locations across the city. Not random crimes. Patterns.

Routes.

People.

Influence.

Keene leaned closer, jaw tight. "This isn't a crew," he said quietly. "It's infrastructure."

Naomi scrolled further.

A list appeared.

At the top:

Franklin — Closed

Warehouse — Active

Docks — Active

Below that, a new line blinked slowly.

Echo — Unknown Variable

Her stomach tightened.

"He knew," she whispered. "Hollow knew someone was out there."

The laptop screen glitched suddenly.

Static rolled across the display.

Then a new window opened.

A single message typed itself across the screen.

ECHO: You shouldn't open files alone.

Naomi's breath caught.

Keene's hand moved instinctively toward the keyboard.

"Whoever this is, they're inside the drive," he muttered.

The text continued.

ECHO: Vale is closer than you think. Calder is watching. Hollow is adapting.

Naomi leaned forward.

"Then show yourself," she said quietly.

The cursor blinked.

Paused.

And then:

ECHO: Not yet. You're still choosing sides.

The screen went dark.

Back at county jail, Hollow paced his cell for the first time since his arrest.

The guard watched him carefully.

"You look nervous tonight," the man said.

Hollow ignored him, running a hand through his hair.

The word Echo echoed in his mind like a crack in glass.

He flipped open his notebook, scribbling fast — crossing out names, redrawing arrows.

Someone had touched his system.

Someone he never accounted for.

And that scared him more than any cop.

Across town, Vale leaned against his SUV, watching the river from a distance.

A man approached quietly. "They hit the docks before we could lock it down."

Vale didn't look surprised.

"They're moving faster now," he said calmly.

"Echo?" the man asked.

Vale's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Echo doesn't exist," he said. "It's just a ghost Hollow invented to scare weak players."

But his tone lacked conviction.

Because deep down… he wasn't sure anymore.

Under the overpass, Naomi stared at the blank laptop screen.

"You saw that too, right?" she asked Keene.

"I saw someone hijack a secure file without leaving a trace," he replied.

Her phone buzzed.

New message.

Echo:

You weren't supposed to see that yet.

Naomi typed back quickly.

Then stop watching and start explaining.

The reply came slower this time.

Hollow built the system. I built the failsafe.

Her breath hitched.

"What does that mean?" she whispered.

Keene watched her carefully.

"It means," he said quietly, "Echo might be the only one who knows how to shut this whole thing down."

Naomi stared out into the dark city.

Every street felt like it had eyes now.

"What if Echo doesn't want it shut down?" she asked.

Keene didn't answer.

Because for the first time, neither of them knew whether Echo was helping… or guiding them somewhere Hollow had never intended.
