THOR - Chapter 10: The Gathering Storm

The fog over Merry had become a permanent fixture. It clung to the streets, seeped into homes, and pressed against windows like a living thing. The town was unraveling, and everyone knew it.

At the Finch home, the family sat in tense silence. Maria was awake, her scars dull but her eyes haunted. Martha hovered near her constantly, as though afraid she might vanish if left alone. Logan busied himself with repairs, but his movements were mechanical, his face pale.

Father John stood at the window, his crucifix hidden beneath his coat. He had seen towns fall before—villages consumed by superstition, families torn apart by fear—but Merry was different. The Devourer was not just a spirit. It was hunger itself, feeding on cruelty, grief, and resentment. And now it had spread beyond the Finch home.

The Call to Arms

By mid-morning, Father John made his decision. He gathered the Finch family, Hanna, and Anni in the living room.

"This is no longer about one family," he said gravely. "Merry itself is under siege. If we do not act, the Devourer will consume the entire town."

Logan clenched his fists. "So what do we do? Sit here while it eats the town alive?"

Father John shook his head. "No. We fight. But not with weapons. With unity. The circle must be reformed, not just with the three girls, but with the town itself. We must gather those who still resist, those who still believe. Only together can we drive it back."

Maria's voice trembled. "But the town hates me. They'll never stand with me."

Father John's eyes burned with determination. "Then we show them the truth. We show them what is at stake. Fear divides, but survival unites."

The Town Meeting

That evening, Father John called a meeting at the church. Despite the fog, dozens of townspeople gathered, their faces pale, their eyes wide with fear.

Father John stood at the altar, his voice steady. "You have all seen it. The shadows. The whispers. The hollowed. This is not imagination. This is not hysteria. Merry is under attack."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some nodded, others shook their heads.

"This began with a ritual," Father John continued. "A trap designed to feed on cruelty. It promised justice, but it delivered damnation. Now the Devourer is here, and it will not stop until it consumes us all."

A man in the crowd shouted, "You're saying this is because of those girls? Because of Maria Finch?"

All eyes turned to Maria, who sat trembling in the front pew.

Father John raised his hand. "Do not blame the victim. Maria did not summon this alone. She was targeted, tormented, and manipulated. The Devourer feeds on cruelty, and it found fertile ground in this town. If you want someone to blame, look to your own hearts."

Silence fell.

The Division

Despite Father John's words, suspicion lingered. Some townspeople whispered that Maria was cursed, that she had brought the darkness upon them. Others argued that the priest was exaggerating, that the strange events were nothing more than coincidence.

The Devourer thrived on this division. Shadows flickered in the corners of the church, whispering into ears, sowing doubt.

"You cannot trust her," one voice hissed. "She is marked."

"She will betray you," another whispered. "She is already theirs."

Maria clutched her mother's hand, tears streaming down her face. "They hate me," she whispered. "They'll never stand with me."

Martha hugged her tightly. "We'll make them see. We'll make them understand."

The First Test

As the meeting continued, the church doors slammed open. A woman staggered inside, her eyes black, her voice whispering in Latin. It was Mrs. Carter, Marcus's mother.

The crowd screamed, backing away. Father John stepped forward, raising his crucifix. "She is hollowed," he said. "The Devourer has claimed her."

Mrs. Carter shrieked, her voice layered with echoes. "The Debt must be paid!"

The shadows surged, filling the church with darkness. People screamed, fleeing toward the exits.

Father John's voice rose above the chaos. "Stay together! Do not break!"

Maria, Anni, and Hanna joined hands, forming a circle. Their voices trembled, but they began to chant the words from the ritual. The air grew colder, the shadows shrieked, and Mrs. Carter collapsed to the floor, unconscious.

The crowd stared in silence. For the first time, they saw the truth. The girls were not cursed—they were fighting.

The Priest's Plea

Father John turned to the townspeople, his voice urgent. "Do you see? This is real. This is happening. And only together can we resist it. The circle is strong, but it cannot stand alone. We must unite, or we will fall."

Slowly, people began to nod. Fear still lingered, but determination flickered in their eyes.

Logan stepped forward, his voice steady. "We protect our children. We protect our town. We stand together."

Martha added, "No more blame. No more cruelty. If we feed it, it wins. If we unite, it starves."

Closing Image

That night, the townspeople returned to their homes, shaken but resolute. The fog still clung to the streets, the shadows still whispered, but something had changed. For the first time, Merry was fighting back.

Maria sat at the window, staring into the mist. She could feel the entity's presence, not inside her, but around her, moving through the town like smoke.

She whispered to herself, her voice trembling. "The circle is growing. But the Debt… the Debt is still here."

And in the distance, beyond the valley, the old mill pulsed faintly with purple light, its heartbeat echoing through the town.
