Chapter 7 - CHAPTER SEVEN - THE OFFICE TRAP

The office smelled like power and polished wood.

Adrian's desk dominated the room, black and imposing. Behind it, the skyline of the city stretched like an empire that waited for his command. And across from it… Elara Quinn, standing like she hadn't yet realized how small she really was.

"You're late," Adrian said, his voice sharp but low, almost calm enough to be more dangerous.

"I… I wasn't sure what I was supposed to do first," she admitted, careful. Every muscle in her body was tense.

He leaned back in his chair, hands folded behind his head. His eyes didn't blink. They measured. They weighed. They judged.

"You're learning quickly that mistakes aren't allowed," he said. "You're under my roof. My rules. My schedule. My world."

"I understand that," she said, her voice firmer than she felt. "I just… I want to do my job properly."

His eyes narrowed.

"Do you? Or do you want to survive?"

The words hit her harder than she expected.

"I… want both," she admitted.

"Naive." His lips curved slightly. A smile, but not a friendly one. "This world doesn't give you both. Not for long. One slips, the other dies."

She swallowed, feeling the weight of his words in her chest.

"And yet," he said, standing suddenly, moving closer, "you're already beginning to think you're untouchable. That you can navigate my world without me noticing."

"I'm not untouchable," she whispered. "I just… I won't be broken by fear."

Something in Adrian's expression flickered. Not anger. Not irritation. But something deeper. Interest. Curiosity. Perhaps even admiration — though he would never admit it.

"Most people would have cowered the second they walked through my doors," he said. "Most people would have begged. Crumbled. Pleaded."

"I didn't."

He paused, tilting his head slightly. "No. You didn't. And that… surprises me."

Her pulse quickened. It wasn't fear this time. It was awareness. She could feel him studying her, testing her, like a predator circling a new threat.

"Why are you doing this?" she asked, finally. "Why keep me here if you think I killed your mother?"

His jaw tightened. "Because I want to see the truth. Because I need to see it. And because…" He stepped even closer. His presence filled the room. "Because I can't stop thinking about that night. About you. About everything I lost."

She froze. Everything. He said it like it was simple. But it wasn't. It was heavy. It was dangerous.

"You're dangerous," she said softly.

"Perhaps," he admitted, leaning slightly over the desk so only inches separated them. "But not as dangerous as the truth."

Her hands itched to grab the folder on his desk — the contract, her life on paper. But she didn't. She couldn't.

"You're playing a game," she said, almost a whisper. "And I don't even know the rules yet."

"Ah," he said, straightening suddenly. "But you will. Very soon. Every game has rules. And every player has limits. We'll discover yours together."

She stepped back, finally, to put distance between them. But her heart pounded.

Because for the first time, she realized something terrifying:

Adrian Vale wasn't just punishing her.

He was fascinated by her. Obsessed even.

And fascination… could be far more dangerous than hatred.

Outside, the city hummed in ignorance. The rain continued to fall. But inside that office, two people circled each other, each testing the other, each hiding secrets.

And neither yet knew how deeply the other would change their life
