Zhenlan lifted his book slightly. "I didn't say anything," he lightly protested, but both of us knew that he didn't need to say anything. His face had subtitles when he wanted to make sure I knew what he was thinking.
"You didn't need to," I replied.
Lingyun came into the kitchen behind us and carefully lowered himself onto the nearest stool. "Her point is valid. Your face was very expressive."
Zhenlan turned another page without answering him.
That seemed to be everyone's preferred method of dealing with Lingyun tonight.
I climbed onto the edge of the counter instead of taking a stool.
Chenghai looked over his shoulder, probably debating whether to tell me to get down, but he must have decided that keeping me close to the food was easier than arguing. He speared a potato with a fork and held it toward me while turning the eggs with his other hand.
I ate it.
