Selene sat comfortably at my side, while across from us, Josephine kept Jenna occupied with the kind of effortless, polite conversation she was famous for. Seeing Josephine so relaxed was honestly terrifying. If I hadn't already seen her true face, I would also have believed she was the saint she pretended to be, like everyone else.
"I really wanted to see you for myself," Selene said, her voice snapping me out of my spiraling thoughts.
I blinked in surprise. "Me?" I asked, pointing one finger at me.
She nodded without a second's hesitation, "Of course. After everything that happened...that day, I was so worried about you."
My chest tightened. It hit me.
To her, I was a friend just caught in a messy scandal, and yet, she had come here personally to check on me. I felt a sudden, irrational lump in my throat. Get a grip, Kayla, I told myself.
