"She's responding well to the treatment," the doctor said with a reassuring smile. "She's asleep now because her body is exhausted. What she ingested was too much for a child her age, but she's stable for now. She should wake up within the next hour or so."
Instead of relief...
A fresh wave of guilt crashed over me.
She really was...
Too little to go through all of this.
The doctor looked at me gently.
"For now, let her rest."
Then he added,
"And you should get some rest as well. You'll need your strength when she wakes up."
"Thank you, doctor," I whispered.
He gave a small nod before walking away.
I remained standing there, my eyes fixed on the little girl lying beyond the glass.
She looked so small...
So fragile...
And all I could think was that I should have been the one lying in that bed instead.
I suddenly remembered something and turned to Uncle Herbert and Alexander.
"What were the results?" I asked.
The two of them exchanged glances.
