Chapter 51 - What are you hiding

I couldn't carry it anymore.

Not the questions.

Not the silence.

Not the way everything in my life suddenly seemed connected to a name I had never known before… yet somehow felt like I had always carried.

Alina.

The first time I saw that name was at Elias' place.

It had been small.

Unintentional.

Just a name written where it shouldn't have meant anything.

But it did.

It stayed with me.

Followed me.

Until it led me home.

To the truth.

To my parents.

To the reality that I wasn't alone when I was born.

That I had a twin.

That she lived.

And then disappeared.

And now—

Elias knew her.

That wasn't something I could ignore.

That wasn't something I could wait on.

So this time, I didn't go to him confused.

I didn't go to him hoping he would explain.

I went to him ready to demand the truth.

His office door opened before I even realized how fast I had walked there.

He looked up immediately.

Like he felt me coming.

Like some part of him already knew this moment would come.

"Jessy—"

"Stop."

My voice cut through whatever he was about to say.

Sharp.

Clear.

Unshaken.

He paused.

Actually paused.

And that alone told me everything I needed to know.

He wasn't prepared for this version of me.

Good.

Because I wasn't prepared to leave without answers.

"You don't get to act like everything is normal," I said, stepping closer. "You don't get to look at me like that, touch me, pull me close… and then keep things from me that clearly involve me."

His jaw tightened slightly.

But he didn't interrupt.

He didn't deny it either.

"Jessy—"

"No," I cut in again, firmer this time. "You don't get to control this conversation. Not today."

Silence filled the space between us.

But this wasn't the kind of silence I used to fear.

This one felt powerful.

Because for the first time…

I wasn't asking.

I was demanding.

"What do you want to know?" he finally asked.

Everything.

But I started with the one thing that mattered most.

"Alina."

That name alone shifted something in him.

I saw it clearly this time.

No more guessing.

No more doubt.

"You knew her," I said.

"Yes."

Simple.

Direct.

No hesitation.

My heart tightened.

"You were close."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

That answer landed deeper.

Because it wasn't just confirmation.

It was history.

"What happened to her?" I asked.

This time, he didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation?

It told me more than words ever could.

"There's more," I said quietly.

He looked at me.

Really looked at me.

Like he was trying to decide how much I could handle.

Or how much he was willing to give.

"She got pregnant," I said.

Not a question.

A statement.

His silence confirmed it.

"She did," he admitted.

My chest rose slowly.

"And the child?"

That question changed everything.

I saw it in his eyes.

That shift.

That moment where something crossed a line he couldn't take back.

"You've already met her," he said.

My heartbeat stumbled.

"What?"

"Lia."

The world didn't stop.

But something inside me did.

Lia.

The little girl who ran to me.

Held me.

Called me "mom" like it belonged there.

The one I couldn't explain why I felt so connected to.

"That's… her child?" I whispered.

"Yes."

The answer settled heavily.

But strangely—

It didn't feel wrong.

It felt like something falling into place.

"That's why…" I breathed.

Why she felt familiar.

Why she felt mine.

Why every instinct in me responded to her like I had known her forever.

Elias stepped closer.

"I didn't tell you because I wasn't sure," he said.

"Not sure of what?" I asked.

"If it was coincidence… or something more."

My eyes searched his.

"You think Alina is my sister."

"I think it's possible."

Possible.

But deep down…

It didn't feel like a possibility.

It felt like truth waiting to be confirmed.

"You should have told me," I said quietly.

His expression softened.

"I didn't want to hurt you with something I couldn't prove."

That answer…

It didn't fix everything.

But it wasn't selfish either.

It was careful.

Too careful.

"And her?" I asked again, my voice lowering.

"What happened to Alina?"

This time, the silence came back.

But it wasn't avoidance.

It was weight.

"She's gone," he said.

I closed my eyes briefly.

Not because I didn't expect it.

But because hearing it made it real.

"How?" I asked.

"Complications."

Simple.

But heavy enough to break something inside me.

I nodded slowly.

Absorbing it.

Accepting it.

Then I looked at him again.

"And Lia?"

"She's mine," he said.

But not in a possessive way.

In a way that carried responsibility.

Sacrifice.

Choice.

"You stayed," I said softly.

"Yes."

And that one word separated him from everything I had known before.

He didn't run.

He didn't disappear.

He stayed.

And suddenly…

Everything about him made sense.

The way he protected.

The way he held back.

The way he cared.

Silence filled the room again.

But this time—

It wasn't confusing.

It was clear.

And for the first time since all of this began…

I wasn't lost anymore.

I was standing in the truth.

Even if it wasn't complete yet.
