Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – A Family Dinner With Knives

The Zhao family mansion glowed brighter than usual that evening.

Every light in the garden was turned on, illuminating the winding stone paths and carefully trimmed hedges. The fountain at the center of the courtyard sparkled beneath the warm glow of golden lamps, casting dancing reflections on the water.

Luxury cars were already parked along the driveway.

Inside the mansion, the servants moved quickly and quietly, preparing the dining hall.

A long table stretched across the center of the room, covered with white linen. Silver utensils reflected the chandelier light, gleaming like polished blades.

At the head of the table sat Lorenzo Zhao.

His fingers tapped slowly against the table surface.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

The sound echoed faintly in the quiet room, marking the passing seconds.

Across from him, Reina Zhao lifted her teacup with elegant calmness. Her expression looked gentle, but her eyes were sharp.

Beside her sat Melissa Zhao, wearing a pale blue dress and a small diamond necklace.

Melissa glanced at the clock on the wall.

7:26 PM.

She leaned slightly closer to her mother and whispered,

"Mom… do you think she'll actually come?"

Reina set down her teacup without making a sound.

"She will."

Melissa frowned slightly.

"How can you be so sure?"

Reina smiled faintly.

"Because Lina still cares about appearances."

Melissa's lips curved upward slowly.

"If she walks into this dinner tonight…"

She lowered her voice.

"…she's walking into her own humiliation."

Reina did not reply.

But the silence between them already confirmed the plan.

At exactly 7:30 PM, the sound of a car engine stopped outside the mansion.

Through the tall glass windows of the dining hall, headlights briefly swept across the marble floor.

A servant entered quickly and bowed.

"Miss Lina Zhao has arrived."

The room went quiet.

Lorenzo Zhao's expression darkened.

"Let her in."

Moments later, the dining hall doors opened.

Lina Zhao stepped inside.

She wore a simple ivory dress that fell just below her knees. Over it was a dark coat, the fabric moving slightly as she walked.

Her hair was tied loosely behind her head.

No heavy makeup.

No jewelry.

Yet somehow, she looked more composed than anyone else in the room.

Her gaze swept across the dining table.

Her father.

Her stepmother.

Her cousin.

The same faces.

The same expressions.

For a moment, the past flashed through Lina's mind.

In her previous life, she had walked into this exact room feeling nervous… hoping to reconcile with her family.

Tonight, she felt nothing.

Lina stopped beside the table and spoke calmly.

"Father."

Lorenzo did not return the greeting.

Instead, he picked up a folder from the table and slammed it down.

The sharp sound echoed through the dining hall.

"Explain this."

Lina glanced down at the document.

It was the public announcement she made at the charity gala.

Her engagement cancellation.

She slowly pulled out a chair and sat down.

"I believe the document speaks for itself," she said calmly.

Lorenzo's face turned red with anger.

"You cancelled your engagement with Victor Han in front of the entire business community!"

"Yes."

"You humiliated the Han family!"

Lina lifted her gaze.

"Did I?"

Reina sighed softly, placing a hand on Lorenzo's arm.

"Lorenzo, please calm down."

She turned to Lina with a gentle expression.

"Lina, your father is only worried about the family's reputation."

Melissa leaned forward slightly, her voice soft and sympathetic.

"Cousin, everyone knows how important the Han family alliance is to Zhao Group."

Lina watched them quietly.

The performance was flawless.

Concerned father.

Understanding stepmother.

Worried cousin.

If she had not lived through this before…

She might have believed it.

Lina rested her hands lightly on the table.

"Let me ask a question," she said calmly.

Lorenzo frowned.

"What question?"

Lina looked directly at him.

"Do you believe Zhao Group cannot survive without Han Corporation?"

The question hung in the air.

Lorenzo slammed his palm on the table.

"That is not the issue!"

"Then what is?" Lina asked.

Reina spoke before Lorenzo could answer.

"The issue is that you acted without consulting your family."

Melissa nodded.

"Victor Han personally called today. He sounded extremely disappointed."

Lina tilted her head slightly.

"Disappointed?"

Melissa lowered her eyes, pretending to feel uncomfortable.

"The entire business community is talking about it."

Lina let out a small breath.

Then she reached into her bag and placed a tablet on the table.

The screen lit up.

"Speaking of the business community," she said quietly.

"I found something interesting."

Melissa's smile faltered slightly.

Lina tapped the screen once.

A document appeared.

Share transfer authorization.

Beneficiary: Melissa Zhao.

Five percent of Zhao Group shares.

Silence filled the dining hall.

Lorenzo leaned forward sharply.

"What is this?"

Melissa's face drained of color.

"I… I've never seen that!"

Reina immediately spoke.

"Lina, what kind of accusation is this?"

Lina met her gaze calmly.

"I'm not accusing anyone."

She slid the tablet across the table toward Lorenzo.

"I'm presenting evidence."

Lorenzo grabbed the tablet.

His brows furrowed deeper as he read the document.

"Melissa," he said slowly, "explain this."

Melissa's fingers trembled on the edge of the table.

"This must be fake!"

Reina's voice became sharp.

"Someone is clearly framing her!"

Lina leaned back slightly in her chair.

"Yes."

Her voice was soft.

"Someone is framing her."

She looked directly at Melissa.

"Perhaps the same person who wanted Zhao Group to become dependent on Han Corporation."

Melissa's eyes widened.

The room fell silent again.

Lorenzo finally slammed the tablet onto the table.

"Enough!"

His gaze shifted back to Lina.

"Even if this document is real, your actions have still damaged the Zhao family's reputation."

Lina nodded once.

"That's true."

Then she pushed back her chair and stood up.

"But I also saved Zhao Group."

Lorenzo frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Lina put on her coat slowly.

"This morning, Han Corporation attempted to cut off our supplier network."

Reina's expression changed slightly.

"But Zhao Group has already secured three international suppliers."

Lina looked around the table.

"So the company will survive."

She turned toward the door.

"Enjoy your dinner."

And without waiting for a response, she walked out of the dining hall.

The heavy doors closed behind her.

Leaving the Zhao family sitting in stunned silence.

***

Outside the mansion, the night air felt cool and quiet.

Lina walked down the garden path.

Halfway to the gate, a deep voice spoke behind her.

"Miss Zhao."

She stopped.

Turning around, she saw a black car parked near the entrance.

Leaning against the car door was Adrian Lu.

The streetlight cast a faint shadow across his face.

Lina raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Mr. Lu."

Adrian straightened.

"You handled that dinner well."

"You were watching?" Lina asked.

"Yes."

She crossed her arms lightly.

"Do you make a habit of observing people?"

Adrian met her gaze.

"Only my investments."

A small smile touched Lina's lips.

"Investment?"

"You signed a contract with Lu Corporation."

He stepped closer.

"I protect what I invest in."

For a moment, the two of them stood quietly beneath the garden lights.

Lina studied his expression carefully.

"Why help me?" she asked.

Adrian answered without hesitation.

"Because Victor Han is my enemy."

The honesty surprised her.

Lina nodded slowly.

"So this is an alliance."

"Yes."

Adrian opened the car door.

"But alliances…"

He paused briefly.

"…can evolve."

Lina's eyes narrowed slightly.

Before she could ask what he meant, Adrian got into the car.

The engine started.

Within seconds, the car disappeared down the dark road.

Lina stood alone beneath the lights of the Zhao mansion.

For the first time since her rebirth…

She realized something.

The future she remembered was already changing.

And the man named Adrian Lu might become the biggest variable of all.
