Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – Entering the Lion's Den

The Han Corporation headquarters stood like a dark monolith.

It pierced the heart of the business district, casting a shadow over everything below.

Glass walls reflected the morning sunlight coldly.

No warmth.

No mercy.

Inside the executive conference room, the atmosphere was heavy.

Very heavy.

The air felt thick, suffocating, as if oxygen had been sucked out by tension.

Several board directors sat silently around the long oval table.

No one dared to speak.

No one dared to breathe too loudly.

At the head of the table stood Victor Han.

His expression was calm.

Controlled.

But anyone who knew him well could feel the storm brewing beneath the surface.

He was in a bad mood.

Dangerously so.

The assistant beside him spoke carefully, holding a tablet like a shield.

"Sir, Zhao Group has secured three international suppliers."

Silence.

The word hung in the air, heavy and unacceptable.

Victor's fingers tapped once on the wooden table.

Tap.

Slow.

Measured.

Like a countdown.

"How many investors have we pressured?"

"Two major groups have agreed to withdraw funding by next week."

Victor nodded slightly.

"Continue."

The assistant hesitated before speaking again, swallowing hard.

"Sir… there is another problem."

Victor raised his eyes.

The gaze was sharp enough to cut glass.

"What is it?"

"Miss Zhao announced she will visit Han Corporation headquarters today."

The room became completely silent.

The directors exchanged nervous glances.

One director whispered, barely audible,

"She is coming here?"

Another director frowned, confusion mixing with fear.

"That woman is provoking us."

Victor did not speak immediately.

He let the silence stretch, letting the anxiety build.

Slowly, a faint smile appeared on his lips.

It did not reach his eyes.

"Interesting."

He stood up and walked toward the window.

Below him, the city moved like a living organism.

People walking.

Cars passing.

Businesses operating.

Power flowing silently through the veins of the streets.

Victor spoke quietly, his reflection ghostly against the glass.

"She is walking into my territory."

His assistant asked cautiously,

"Should we prepare security pressure measures?"

"Shall we turn her away?"

Victor shook his head.

"No."

He turned slightly, his silhouette dark against the light.

"Let her come."

"I want to see how far she is willing to go."

***

At 10:00 AM.

A black luxury car stopped in front of Han Corporation headquarters.

The engine hummed softly before dying into silence.

Reporters were already waiting outside.

A swarm of vultures sensing blood.

Camera flashes erupted the moment Lina Zhao stepped out of the car.

Click. Click. Click.

A storm of light surrounded her.

She wore a simple white business suit.

Sharp lines.

Clean cut.

No excessive accessories.

No emotional expression.

Calm.

Cold.

Elegant.

She looked like a blade wrapped in silk.

The media immediately surged forward, microphones thrust toward her face.

"Miss Zhao! Are you here to reconcile with Han Corporation?"

"Is the engagement cancellation related to business conflict?"

"Did Zhao Group receive outside financial support?"

"Is it true you are collaborating with Lu Corporation?"

Lina did not answer.

She did not flinch at the shouts.

She walked forward.

Her heels clicked against the pavement, a steady rhythm amidst the chaos.

Security guards approached, forming a barrier.

But then, they received a communication signal from inside.

Earpieces crackled.

After a moment, they stepped aside.

They opened the entrance.

The message was clear.

She was allowed inside.

By permission of the king.

Inside the building, the lobby was vast and quiet.

A stark contrast to the frenzy outside.

Employees watched silently as Lina walked toward the elevator.

Whispers spread quietly through the open office spaces.

"That's Miss Zhao."

"She really came alone."

"She looks completely different from before…"

"Did you see her eyes? She's not afraid."

The elevator doors closed.

Silence.

The world outside was cut off.

The number panel slowly increased.

Twenty.

Twenty-five.

Thirty.

Each floor felt heavier.

The air pressure seemed to change.

Like walking toward a battlefield.

Like walking toward the mouth of a lion.

***

Top floor.

Executive conference room.

Victor Han stood beside the large glass window.

His back was to the door.

He did not turn around when the door opened.

He didn't need to.

He could feel her presence.

Footsteps approached slowly.

Confident.

Unhurried.

Lina Zhao stopped three meters behind him.

The distance was safe.

Strategic.

Victor spoke first.

His voice echoed in the vast room.

"You came."

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Thick.

Outside the window, the city skyline stretched endlessly.

A kingdom of steel and glass.

Victor finally turned around.

His gaze locked onto Lina.

Studying.

Measuring.

Like evaluating a strategic opponent.

Like trying to find a crack in the armor.

"You are brave," Victor said slowly.

Lina answered calmly.

Her voice did not tremble.

"Or stupid."

Victor smiled faintly.

A predator amused by prey that doesn't run.

"Why did you come?"

Lina placed a document folder on the table.

The sound was sharp.

"I want to make an announcement."

Victor did not open the folder.

He kept his eyes on her.

"What announcement?"

Lina spoke clearly.

Every word enunciated.

"I am formally declaring Zhao Group's business independence from Han Corporation influence."

Silence.

The air became colder.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees.

Victor's eyes narrowed slightly.

"You are declaring war."

"Yes."

Victor walked slowly toward her.

His footsteps were very controlled.

Step. Step. Step.

Like a predator observing prey.

Closing the distance.

"When did you become this confident?" Victor asked.

His voice was low.

Intimate.

Threatening.

Lina met his gaze.

She did not blink.

"Three years ago."

The answer surprised him slightly.

A flicker of confusion crossed his face.

Three years ago?

Before the engagement?

Victor stopped two steps away.

He was close enough to touch her.

"Do you think you can win against me?"

Lina smiled faintly.

The expression was chilling.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether you underestimate me."

Victor laughed softly.

The sound was low.

Dangerous.

It vibrated in the space between them.

"You changed."

"Yes."

"Because of Adrian Lu?"

The name was spoken slowly.

Like poison.

Like a curse.

Lina did not confirm.

But she did not deny it.

Her silence was louder than words.

Victor's eyes darkened.

The amusement vanished.

"Do you know what happens when someone stands against Han Corporation?"

"Yes."

Victor's voice lowered.

A whisper of death.

"They disappear."

"They are erased."

Lina answered quietly.

Her voice was steady as stone.

"Then I will not disappear."

Silence.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

The tension was a wire pulled tight, ready to snap.

Then Victor spoke again.

"You are playing a dangerous game."

Lina tilted her head slightly.

"Business is always dangerous."

Victor suddenly said,

"I can destroy Zhao Group within one month."

The words were said very calmly.

Like stating a fact.

Like predicting the weather.

I will break you.

Lina's expression remained unchanged.

She did not flinch.

She did not look away.

"Try."

Something flickered briefly inside Victor's eyes.

Shock.

Respect.

Fear.

Because Lina was not afraid.

That was new.

Unpredictable.

Dangerous.

Victor picked up the document folder.

Opened it slowly.

The paper rustled in the silence.

Inside were market cooperation agreements.

International supplier contracts.

Strategic partnership plans.

All signed.

All sealed.

His fingers stopped moving.

Because he understood something.

This wasn't luck.

Someone had prepared this.

Someone had helped her.

Someone with enough power to counter Han Corporation.

Victor whispered softly,

"…Adrian Lu."

Lina said nothing.

But inside her chest…

Something tightened slightly.

A secret shared.

A bond formed in the shadows.

***

At the same moment.

Inside Lu Corporation Tower.

Across the city.

Adrian Lu stood beside the window.

He was not looking at his work.

He was looking at the Han Corporation building in the distance.

His assistant spoke quietly.

"Sir, Miss Zhao is inside Han Corporation headquarters."

Adrian's eyes darkened.

The storm clouds gathering in his gaze.

"Victor will pressure her."

"Yes, sir."

Adrian said one sentence.

His voice was calm.

Absolute.

"Monitor everything."

"And if Victor crosses the line…"

His hand tightened slightly on the windowsill.

"Stop him."

"Yes, sir."

***

Back inside Han Corporation.

Victor placed the document folder back on the table.

The sound was final.

Like a gavel striking.

Then he spoke quietly.

"If you fail…"

His gaze became colder.

Ice cold.

"Do not expect mercy."

"I will not save you."

Lina nodded.

"Understood."

She turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

Her hand hovered over the handle.

Without looking back, she spoke.

Her voice carried across the room.

"Victor."

"Yes?"

"This is only the beginning."

And she walked out.

The door clicked shut.

Leaving behind a silent conference room.

Leaving behind a king in his tower.

Victor stood alone.

Looking at the closed door.

The silence wrapped around him.

After a long moment, he smiled slowly.

A dangerous, patient smile.

The smile of a hunter who has found worthy prey.

"She is becoming interesting."

***

Outside the building.

Reporters surrounded Lina again.

The flashes blinded.

The shouts deafened.

But she ignored them.

They were noise.

Background static.

She walked toward the car waiting outside.

The wind moved gently across her hair, lifting the strands softly.

The sun was bright.

The sky was clear.

Inside her mind…

She knew.

The real war had just begun.

And this time…

She was ready.
