Chapter 1 - The Night That Shouldn't Exist

The rain started at exactly 2:17 a.m.

Lyra Vale noticed this because she was the type of person who noticed useless details. The kind of detail nobody else cared about. The rain had not been forecast. The sky had been clear. Yet suddenly, as if someone flipped a switch in the heavens, rain poured down like a broken faucet. Lyra leaned against the bus stop bench and sighed."Of course. "Her shift at the convenience store had ended ten minutes earlier. Her shoes were cheap, the streetlights flickered like they were having an existential crisis, and the last bus had already passed. Fantastic. She pulled the hood of her jacket tighter. The street was empty. Too empty. Not the normal kind of empty either. Not the sleepy, late-night quiet where you might still hear distant traffic or a drunk guy singing somewhere. No. This silence felt… wrong. The kind that made your brain itch. Lyra frowned slightly."That's weird." She stood up and looked down the street. No cars. No lights in the apartment buildings. Even the vending machines across the road were dark. For a moment she wondered if the entire city had collectively decided to turn itself off. Then she heard it.

Drip.

Not rain.

Something thicker.

Drip.

Lyra slowly turned her head.

Behind the bus stop was a narrow alleyway she had passed hundreds of times.

Tonight it looked different.

Darker.

Deeper.

Like it had grown an extra meter when no one was looking. Lyra squinted."Was that always there…?"A shape moved.Very slightly.

Lyra froze. Now listen. Lyra was not the type of person to panic easily. She had worked night shifts for two years. She had chased shoplifters. She had once stared down a raccoon that tried to steal instant noodles. But this? This felt like the universe had just cleared its throat. The shape inside the alley shifted again.Something tall unfolded itself from the darkness. It had too many joints.

Lyra blinked."…Nope."

She turned around immediately."I suddenly remembered I left the stove on."She began walking away.

Fast.

Behind her, something scraped against brick.

Lyra walked faster. Her brain was already performing emergency calculations.

Possibility one: Tall homeless guy.

Possibility two: Illegal science experiment.

Possibility three: She had finally lost her mind

.The scraping sound grew closer.

Lyra broke into a run."Yep. Definitely option three."Her shoes slapped against wet pavement as she sprinted down the street.

Behind her—THUMP.

Something landed.

Hard.

Too hard.

Like a refrigerator jumping off a roof.

Lyra risked a glance back.

Worst decision of her life.

The thing chasing her looked like a person assembled by someone who had only heard vague descriptions of humans.

Arms too long. Legs bending wrong. Head tilted at an angle no spine should allow. And the eyes. Glowing faintly like dying embers. Lyra wheezed."Okay. Cool. Cool cool cool."

She ran harder. The creature followed. It moved in huge, silent leaps.Closing the distance terrifyingly fast.

Lyra turned a corner, and ran straight into a dead end. She stopped. Stared at the brick wall. Then slowly turned around. The creature landed ten meters away.

For a moment they simply looked at each other.

Lyra raised a finger."Before we continue this conversation… quick question."The creature tilted its head."Are you real?"It screamed.

Lyra sighed."Yeah that tracks."The monster lunged.

Time slowed.

Lyra didn't know why she did it.

Maybe instinct.

Maybe desperation.

Maybe stupidity.

But instead of running, she stepped forward and grabbed the rusted metal pipe leaning against the wall. The creature swung its arm.

Lyra swung the pipe.

CLANG.

The impact echoed through the alley. The monster stumbled back.

Both of them froze.

The creature looked confused.

Lyra looked even more confused."…That actually worked?"Then,a voice spoke.

Not from the air.

Not from the creature. From inside her head. Cold.Mechanical.Ancient.

[SYSTEM INITIALIZING] Lyra blinked.

"Oh no."

Glowing text appeared in front of her eyes.[USER DETECTED]

Name: Lyra Vale

Status: Alive (barely)Threat

Level: Extremely Poor Life Choices

Lyra stared."…Excuse me?"

The monster charged again.

More text appeared.

[QUEST GENERATED]

Emergency

Survival Objective: Do not die.

Difficulty: Ridiculous

Reward: ???

Lyra tightened her grip on the pipe."Well," she muttered."If I'm hallucinating…"

The monster lunged.

Lyra swung."…this is a very interactive one."

CLANG.

And somewhere far beyond the night skySomething watching the system paused and began paying attention.
