Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Healing Jutsu

As he spoke, Mikami Yuu picked up a scrap sheet of paper and sketched a few simple lines.

Rin's eyes lit up, and realization dawned on her. "Ah—so that's how it works! Thank you, Yuu-kun!"

"Wait…"

Just as she was about to correct her notes, Rin suddenly reacted. She looked up again, staring at Mikami Yuu with a face full of surprise.

"Yuu-kun, you remember all that so clearly? But I didn't even see you take notes!"

Beside them, Hyakusō couldn't help chiming in as well. "Hey—you're Mikami Yuu, right? Where did you learn all that? I've been in training for over half a year and I still can't explain it that clearly."

"I read and study in my spare time. I've borrowed a lot of books from Konoha's library—though it's all theory. I've never done practical work, so it's just armchair talk."

Mikami Yuu said it lightly.

At that moment,

Obito—left off to the side with no way to join the conversation—felt a bit dissatisfied and tried to force some presence.

"Hmph, what's so hard about that! It's just how blood flows through the body, right? I get it the second I look at it! Rin, if you asked me, I could explain it super clearly too!"

"…Obito-kun, during class I saw you spacing out the whole time. I only didn't say anything because I didn't want to disturb others. The basics are very important—you can't give up just because it feels difficult. If you don't listen seriously, how will you help other people in the future?"

Rin's expression was earnest and her voice gentle, like she was patiently trying to teach him.

Obito instantly wilted. "I-I wasn't spacing out…"

To be fair, Obito really hadn't "spaced out."

He'd just been totally focused on sneaking looks at Rin, without moving his eyes away even once. Rin was simply too kind to say that out loud—otherwise Obito would've gone beet-red on the spot.

With five or six minutes of break left,

Mikami Yuu stood up, planning to wander outside and get familiar with Konoha Hospital's layout—so if he ever had to come again, he wouldn't be lost.

And while he was at it, he wanted to see if he could trigger one or two [Encounter] missions.

After making a round, no mission triggered.

Instead, Mikami Yuu overheard some other information:

"…Lately we've been getting a lot of wounded sent in from the southwest border. Don't tell me the Land of Earth is making trouble?"

"Hard to say. That kind of intel isn't something people at our level should know… Man, it's only been a few years of peace and it's already like this again. If a war really breaks out, it won't just be wounded—lots of people will die. Can't we just live normally?"

The speakers were two medical ninja in white coats, both looking worried.

Then,

a younger guy nearby waved his hand, speaking with a careless look:

"Hey, don't say it like that. We're ninja—casualties on missions are normal, aren't they? Death isn't scary. Death is a cool summer night, a worry-free sleep…"

"Sleep your mom's head! Your family didn't lose anyone last war, huh?!"

"Hey—why are you suddenly cursing? Don't hit, don't hit—if you hit again I'm hitting back!"

"…"

Seeing several medical ninja start brawling not far away, Mikami Yuu quietly backed away.

As a transmigrator, he knew roughly when the Third Great Ninja War would break out—within these next few years. He also knew the Kannabi Bridge mission happened when Obito and Kakashi were twelve, and it was one of the signs that the war was entering its final phase.

But as for the exact day the war "began"…

That, he couldn't say. It was a messy, tangled account to begin with—five great nations plus smaller countries like the Rain were mixed into the conflict in endless combinations. Discussing "motives" was basically meaningless.

Come to think of it, his father in this life was stationed at a border outpost too. He had no idea if he was still alive…

Back in the classroom,

Rin was still correcting her notes.

Obito was still sneaking looks.

Mikami Yuu shook his head, didn't say anything, and sat down to wait for the next class.

Unlike the Ninja Academy, the medical training course instructors were mostly part-time. It was rare for one teacher to teach the whole day. Even for the same subject, the instructor wasn't fixed—they rotated among multiple teachers, whoever had time would teach.

After finishing the "Anatomy" lesson, the first instructor hurried off.

Then, when the fifteen-minute break ended, the classroom door opened.

A gentle-looking blonde woman with black-rimmed glasses entered, cradling a pair of small rabbits. Mikami Yuu couldn't help freezing for a moment.

Her?

"…Hello, everyone. I'm Yakushi Nonō. I'm currently responsible for Konoha's orphanage, and I also teach part-time at Konoha Hospital. I'll be handling the second session—pharmacology."

The blonde woman spoke slowly, her voice like a warm spring, calming the mind.

Yes—Yakushi Nonō.

She was indeed a Konoha shinobi and highly skilled in medical ninjutsu. At this point in time, she should have only recently left Root. Teaching part-time to support the orphanage's daily expenses made sense.

The only question was whether Yakushi Kabuto had already arrived in her orbit… he probably hadn't, yet.

Next,

Nonō began teaching pharmacology, covering everything from the properties and uses of several basic medicines to preparation methods and substitutes. Her explanations were clear and vivid—much more engaging than the previous anatomy instructor. Even Obito, who normally didn't study, lifted his head and listened for a bit.

"…Now, we'll use this wound-healing ointment—'Flesh-Growth Salve'—as an example. We'll observe how it gently stimulates cellular regeneration, and compare it to standard medical ninjutsu."

As she spoke, Nonō lifted one of the rabbits and, with practiced ease, made a small cut near an artery in its hind leg. After the rabbit struggled for a moment, she began applying the ointment.

About two or three minutes later, the wound neatly scabbed over.

Then,

Nonō cut the second rabbit as well—this time using medical ninjutsu.

As soon as the demonstration began, everyone in the room stood up and moved closer to watch. Mikami Yuu, along with Rin and Hyakusō, also leaned in, eyes fixed on Nonō's long, slender hands. A gentle green glow lit up in her palms, and the rabbit's wound healed at a visible pace.

In that moment—
