Chapter 7 - The Training Yard

The morning air was crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and stone.

Elena followed Kael into the castle courtyard.

Soldiers were already there, sparring with swords and practicing magic.

Kael's shadow stretched long across the ground, his presence commanding absolute attention.

Elena stayed near the edge of the yard, watching.

She had never seen so many skilled fighters in one place.

Kael's eyes scanned the yard before settling on her.

"Come closer," he said.

Elena hesitated.

"I… I don't know how to—"

"You will watch," he interrupted softly, his silver eyes locking onto hers. "And you will learn what it means to be safe here."

Her heartbeat quickened. Something about the way he said it… made her feel protected and aware of him all at once.

Kael picked up a long black sword, its blade catching the sunlight.

He moved with fluid grace, each motion precise and deadly.

Elena's gaze followed every movement.

Then Kael stopped suddenly. His silver eyes were fixed on her.

"Step forward."

Her legs trembled, but she obeyed.

Kael smiled faintly—just enough to make her stomach flip.

"Do you feel it?" he asked, his voice low.

"Elena?"

"Yes?"

"The energy in this yard. The power. The danger."

She nodded. "I can feel it."

Kael tilted his head.

"Good. Most people don't notice it. Most would be paralyzed with fear. Not you."

Elena felt heat rise to her cheeks.

"You… really think I'm brave?" she whispered.

"I know you are," Kael said. His voice was almost a growl now, low and protective.

Just then, one of the soldiers swung a heavy sword recklessly.

Kael moved instantly, grabbing the man's wrist and twisting it.

"Careful!" Kael snapped.

Elena gasped.

"Are you okay?" she asked instinctively, stepping closer.

"I am," he said, but his eyes flicked to her in warning.

"You should not be in danger," he said softly, his tone carrying a dangerous undercurrent.

Elena's heart thudded at the words.

She realized that he wasn't just protective—he was possessive.

Kael continued his training, but this time, he moved closer to her, almost like he wanted her to see every motion up close.

Then, without warning, he launched a small demonstration of shadow magic—dark ribbons of energy that swirled around the courtyard.

Elena's instincts kicked in.

She raised her hands instinctively, and a soft golden glow emanated from her palms.

The shadow ribbons faltered slightly before dissipating.

Kael's silver eyes widened.

"You… you really are strong," he said quietly.

Elena blushed.

"I… I didn't mean to—"

"You did perfectly," he interrupted softly, stepping closer. The distance between them was now so small she could feel his warmth.

"Elena…" he said, his voice dropping an octave, low and intimate. "Do you understand what you just did?"

She shook her head, words caught in her throat.

"You saved me."

Her heart skipped.

"Me?" she whispered.

Kael's gaze softened—just enough to make her feel safe, yet charged with tension that made her pulse race.

"Yes," he said, his hand brushing lightly against hers. The contact was fleeting, but it made her stomach flutter.

Elena realized, with a mixture of fear and thrill, that being this close to him… was intoxicating.

Kael looked into her eyes, studying her reaction.

A slow, predatory smile tugged at his lips.

"You are not just my wife," he murmured. "You are… mine."

Elena's breath hitched.

And at that moment, a soft wind carried a whisper through the courtyard, as if the castle itself was acknowledging their growing bond.

It was a small moment. A fleeting one. But it was enough.

To spark the beginning of something dangerous, passionate, and inevitable.
