Chapter 8 - The Moonlit kiss

The castle had fallen into silence.

Even the guards seemed quieter than usual.

Elena wandered into the garden alone, drawn by the soft glow of the moon.

The night air was cool, carrying the scent of jasmine and roses.

She had come to think, to breathe, to feel… normal for a moment in this castle that wasn't hers.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the stone path.

"Elena," Kael's deep voice rumbled behind her.

She turned.

He walked toward her, his black cloak brushing the grass.

Moonlight glinted off his silver eyes, making them look almost unreal.

"Elena… you should not be out here alone."

"I… I just needed a moment," she said softly, brushing a stray strand of hair from her face.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"The world does not forgive weakness," he said quietly, taking a step closer.

Elena's heart began to pound.

"I'm not weak," she whispered.

"You are stronger than most men," he replied, his voice low, almost a growl. "Stronger than anyone who dares face you."

Her cheeks flushed. She could feel his gaze on her like fire against skin.

Suddenly, a rustle of bushes made her jump.

Kael's hand shot out instinctively, grabbing her wrist and pulling her behind him.

A servant, shivering and frightened, peeked out.

"Lady Seraphine… she's plotting again," the man whispered.

Kael's jaw tightened.

"She will learn," he said coldly.

He released Elena's wrist, but his hand lingered just above hers for a heartbeat too long.

Elena swallowed. The electricity of his presence made her pulse race.

Kael stepped closer. His silver eyes locked onto hers.

"Elena…" he murmured.

Her breath caught.

"You are mine," he whispered.

Her knees went weak.

Before she could respond, he tilted his head and brushed his lips against hers.

It was soft. Gentle. But it carried the weight of a storm.

Her eyes widened.

Kael's hand cupped her cheek.

Elena's hands rose instinctively, resting against his chest.

Time seemed to slow.

The night, the moon, the flowers—all of it disappeared except for him and her.

The kiss deepened slightly, a slow, deliberate press of lips that was both tender and possessive.

Her heart raced. She felt dizzy, alive, and terrified all at once.

Kael finally pulled back, just enough to look at her.

"Elena…" he whispered, his forehead brushing against hers.

"You are mine," he repeated, this time more firmly, his voice like silk and steel intertwined.

Elena felt heat rise to her cheeks.

She nodded slightly, unable to speak.

For the first time, she realized: she didn't want to escape.

She wanted this. Him.

And perhaps, she had from the moment he first looked at her at the auction.

The garden was silent again. Only the moon bore witness to their first kiss, soft and intimate, yet full of promise and desire.

Kael's silver eyes held hers for a long moment before he stepped back, just far enough to give her space, but close enough that she could feel his heat.

"Stay close to me," he said quietly.

"I will," Elena whispered.

And for the first time since arriving at the Shadow Castle, she felt safe, wanted, and alive.
