Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – The First Grimoire

The chamber was quiet except for the soft hum of floating lights. The first-years stood in neat circles, shoulders tight with anticipation. Ancient grimoires floated in their displays, glowing faintly as if aware of the students' presence. Whispers echoed softly — nobles boasting of their lineage, commoners exchanging careful glances, and the pulse of latent magic thrumming in the air.

Kael's chest tightened. He had watched the demonstrations the day before, memorizing how aura and control spoke of power. Now it was his turn.

"Step forward," Master Rilvar called, his voice slicing through the murmur. "One by one, you will be granted your grimoire. Respect it. Misjudgment may cost you more than points — it may cost your focus, your control… or worse."

Kael's Turn

"Kael Maren," the master said.

Kael moved forward, careful to keep his breathing steady. His robe brushed against the cold stone floor. A Tidebound Grimoire descended slowly in front of him, its aura fluid and alive, water currents curling gently around the edges, cool mist curling along the floor.

He hesitated for only a heartbeat, then closed his hands around it. The currents responded instantly, moving with his slightest thought. His pulse raced, a rush of exhilaration mixed with fear. This was more than a tool — it was a living force, demanding respect, patience, and precision.

Raising his hands, Kael formed a ribbon of water, twisting it into a perfect spiral midair before letting it fall softly back to the ground. The room fell silent for a beat. Even the nobles stopped their whispering, their eyes tracking him.

Classroom Reactions

A low murmur passed through the first-years:

Nobles smirked, some with barely concealed disdain. "A commoner controlling Tidebound? Interesting… but fragile."

Other commoners exchanged subtle nods of admiration, quietly impressed by his calm control.

Kael returned to his circle, careful to keep his expression neutral. He had succeeded, but he could feel eyes on him, weighing him, judging him.

Darien Emerges – Rivalry Sparks

Next, Darien Fenn stepped forward, his shoulders squared and eyes glinting with ambition. A Tidebound Grimoire hovered down before him as well, but its currents were sharper, faster, more demanding, like a storm barely restrained.

Darien smirked, raising his hands with confidence. A whirlwind of water spun upward, forming small eddies and arcs that almost danced aggressively toward Kael. The room tensed — even some of the nobles leaned forward, curious to see how the first commoner would respond.

Kael's heart skipped. He had never seen a Tidebound flow with such force and urgency, and it made him realize instantly: Darien was a rival he would have to measure against — clever, ambitious, and dangerous if underestimated.

Other Students and Minor Rivals

Across the room:

Kaelen Veyne held the Stoneheart Codex, the ground vibrating slightly beneath his feet. His eyes scanned the room, proud, confident, and calculating — a future opponent who would rely on raw strength and lineage.

Soria Lune, quiet and composed, received the Zephyrwraith Ledger, her aura a whispering wind. She moved gracefully, her eyes observing everything, already analyzing classmates for weakness and opportunity.

Kael felt the weight of all these eyes, all these potential rivals. A current of nervous energy ran through the room, mixing with awe, envy, and ambition.

Master Rilvar's Lesson

The master's staff tapped the dais. "Observe, adapt, and respect your grimoire. The strongest power is not the one that shows off, but the one that understands its wielder, and in turn, the world around it."

Kael exhaled, feeling a mix of relief and exhilaration. Today, he had proven he could bond with a grimoire, but he also understood that others were watching, learning, and sizing him up.

Deep inside, a faint pulse of forbidden magic stirred, brushing against the currents of his Tidebound Grimoire. He ignored it — for now. The time to reveal that power had not yet come, but he knew it would test him, and everyone around him, sooner or later.
