Synopsis
She crashed the King's party to save her life. Now she's trapped with a monster who might be her only salvation. Sera Blackwater is a Tidecaller wolf who despises the winter holidays. While everyone celebrates the Moon Goddess's festival, she's running for her life from Valerius Thorne, her fated mate who murdered her twin sister and now wants to claim her Tidecaller powers to awaken an ancient sea-monster army. Desperate and out of options, Sera crashes the Royal Binding Ceremony and throws herself onto the lap of King Kadrin the Undying, claiming the ancient Law of Sanctuary. It's a death sentence either way: insult the cursed king, who hasn't felt emotion in three hundred years, or surrender to the monster who killed her sister. But when Sera's touch sparks something in Kadrin's frozen heart, everything changes. Now bound by sanctuary law to protect her, the Alpha King must face the one thing more dangerous than a sea-monster invasion: the possibility of feeling again. As Christmas magic collides with ancient curses and forbidden attraction, Sera and Kadrin discover that some bonds are stronger than fate itself.

Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Hated Christmas

Sera's POV

I pressed deeper into the shadows as another couple walked past, laughing and holding hands.

Christmas lights twinkled everywhere. Garlands hung from every surface. The smell of pine and cinnamon made me want to throw up.

I hated Christmas. Hated everything about it.

Especially the Great Winter Binding Ceremony happening right in front of me, hundreds of wolves celebrating their fated mates while I hid in the dark, trying not to be found by the monster who'd killed my sister.

"One more hour," I whispered to myself. "Just survive one more hour, and you can run again."

The ceremony was being held at the Fortress of Iron and Ice, the massive castle where the Alpha King lived. Every wolf in the northern territories had come to witness couples completing their mate bonds under the full winter moon.

It was supposed to be magical. Romantic. The Moon Goddess's greatest gift.

It was a lie.

I knew because I'd watched my twin sister Lyra die screaming in the arms of her "perfect" fated mate a year ago today. Christmas Eve. The night that was supposed to be her happiest.

The night Valerius Thorne murdered her for refusing to let him control her completely.

And now he wanted me.

A ripple of power moved through the crowd. My Tidecaller magic stirred, sensing water nearby. The ocean crashed against the cliffs far below the fortress, calling to my blood.

I could use it. Could pull moisture from the air, create weapons, and escape.

But using my magic would be like lighting a flare. Valerius would find me in seconds.

So I stayed hidden, hating every second of this stupid ceremony, and waited for my chance to slip away.

"Ladies and gentlemen!" A voice boomed across the great hall. "His Majesty, King Kadrin the Undying!"

The crowd went silent. Even I looked up, curiosity overriding caution.

The Alpha King appeared at the top of the stairs.

He was terrifying.

Tall, broad-shouldered, moving with predatory grace. His face could have been carved from ice, all sharp angles and cold beauty. But it was his eyes that made my breath catch. Winter-blue and completely, utterly empty.

They said he'd been cursed three hundred years ago to feel nothing. No joy. No sadness. No love. No anger.

Nothing.

Looking at him, I believed it. He looked more statue than man.

King Kadrin descended the stairs and took his throne, a massive chair made of black stone and silver. He sat like he'd done it a thousand times before, which he probably had.

Three hundred years of sitting alone on that throne.

Three hundred years of feeling nothing.

I almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

"Let the Binding Ceremony begin!" the announcer shouted.

Couples started approaching the throne, one by one. Each pair would kneel before the King, speak their vows, and complete their mate bond in front of witnesses.

It was supposed to be an honor. The Alpha King blesses their union.

I thought it was sick. Making people perform their love like trained animals.

A hand touched my shoulder.

I spun around, water already gathering in my palms.

"Easy, girl." An old woman with kind eyes smiled at me. "Just wanted to offer you some mulled wine. You look cold."

I forced my magic down. "No, thank you."

"Suit yourself." She moved away, but not before giving me a strange look.

My heart hammered. Had she recognized me? Had Valerius sent spies?

I needed to leave. Now.

I started edging toward the side exit when I felt it.

Him.

Valerius's presence hit me like a physical blow. The mate bond, the thing I'd been running from for months, pulled tight, trying to drag me toward him.

No. No, no, no

I scanned the crowd frantically.

There. Near the front entrance. His dark hair and cruel smile stood out even in the packed hall.

And he was looking right at me.

Our eyes met across the room. His smile widened.

He'd found me.

Panic exploded through my chest. I turned and ran, not caring who I pushed past. The side exit was blocked by guards everywhere. The main entrance was where Valerius stood.

I was trapped.

The mate bond yanked harder, trying to force my feet toward him. I gritted my teeth and fought it, my magic surging in response.

Water condensed from the air around me, forming a defensive barrier. Several wolves noticed and backed away, whispering.

"Tidecaller," someone muttered.

"Dangerous," another said.

I didn't care. I just needed to escape.

Valerius started walking toward me through the crowd. Slowly. Confidently. Like a hunter who knew his prey had nowhere to run.

"Sera." His voice carried across the hall even through the noise. "My love. My fated mate. Why do you keep running from destiny?"

Everyone was staring now. At him. At me. At the water swirling around my hands.

"Stay away from me," I said. My voice shook. "I know what you did to Lyra."

"Your sister had an accident." His face was the picture of concern. "I've mourned her every day since."

Liar. I'd seen her body. Seen the claw marks. Heard her dying scream through our twin bond.

But I had no proof. And he had witnesses who swore he was nowhere near her that night.

"The Moon Goddess chose us for each other," Valerius continued, getting closer. "You can't fight fate forever, my darling. Come with me. Complete the bond. Become what you were meant to be."

What I was meant to be. A weapon. A tool for him to use.

That's all he wanted: my Tidecaller powers. The ability to control the ocean and everything in it.

Including the sea monsters that slept in the frozen depths.

"I'd rather die," I spat.

"That can be arranged." His smile never wavered, but his eyes went cold. "Though it would be such a waste."

Guards were moving now, pushing through the crowd toward us. But they wouldn't help me. Valerius was a respected alpha from a powerful pack. I was nobody.

The mate bond pulled again, stronger this time. My feet actually moved toward him against my will.

No. I wouldn't let this happen.

My eyes darted around desperately, looking for any escape route.

That's when I saw him.

King Kadrin, still sitting on his throne, was watching the chaos with those empty winter eyes.

And I remembered something my grandmother had told me years ago. A story about the ancient laws. About how anyone being hunted unjustly could claim sanctuary from the Alpha King during the Binding Ceremony.

It was a death sentence either way. Insult the cursed king who hadn't felt emotion in three hundred years, or surrender to the monster who killed my sister.

But at least one option gave me a chance.

I ran.

Not toward the exit. Toward the throne.

"Stop her!" Valerius shouted.

Guards moved to intercept me. I pulled water from the air and froze it under their feet. They slipped and fell.

The crowd parted as I sprinted down the center aisle.

King Kadrin didn't move. Didn't react. Just watched me approach with those dead, beautiful eyes.

Ten feet from the throne.

Five feet.

Guards were right behind me, hands reaching.

I launched myself forward and landed directly in the Alpha King's lap.

The entire hall went silent.

I grabbed the arms of the throne and shouted the ancient words my grandmother had taught me:

"I claim sanctuary under the Law of the Bound and the Blood! I am unjustly hunted, and I demand the King's protection!"

For three heartbeats, nothing happened.

King Kadrin stared down at me. I stared back up at him.

Then golden light exploded between us.

It erupted from where our skin touchedmy hands on his arms, my body pressed against his chest. The light was warm, alive, beautiful.

And impossible.

Because King Kadrin's eyes weren't empty anymore.

They were wide with shock. With confusion.

With feeling.

"You." His voice came out rough, like he'd forgotten how to speak. "What did you do?"

"I claimed sanctuary," I said, my own voice shaking. "You have to protect me. It's the law."

"I know the law." His hands actually moved and gripped my waist. Not to push me away. To steady me. Like I was something precious that might break.

The golden light pulsed brighter.

"Your Majesty!" Valerius's voice cut through the stunned silence. "That woman is my fated mate. She's running from her destiny. She has no right to sanctuary."

Kadrin's eyes never left mine. And in them, I saw something that terrified me more than Valerius ever could.

Life.

"She invoked the ancient law," Kadrin said slowly. Like he was remembering how emotion worked. "In front of witnesses. During the sacred ceremony."

"But"

"The law is absolute." Kadrin's voice grew stronger. More certain. "Sera Blackwater is now under my protection. Anyone who harms her answers to me."

His arms tightened around me slightly. Possessively.

The golden light between us flared one more time, then faded.

But something had changed. I could feel it in the air. In the way Kadrin looked at me.

In the way, my own heart was racing for reasons that had nothing to do with fear.

"This isn't over," Valerius said quietly. "That woman belongs to me."

"She belongs to no one." Kadrin's voice was ice. "Take your grievance to the Council if you wish. But you will not touch her while she remains under my roof."

Guards surrounded Valerius, politely but firmly escorting him away.

The crowd started whispering. Murmuring. The ceremony had just been completely disrupted.

And I was still sitting in the Alpha King's lap.

"You can let go of me now," I said quietly.

"Can I?" Kadrin tilted his head, studying me like I was a puzzle he couldn't solve. "You just made me feel something. For the first time in three hundred years, I felt... warmth. Shock. Curiosity."

His fingers flexed against my waist.

"I don't know if I should thank you," he said softly. "Or hate you for what you've done."

"What did I do?"

"I don't know." His eyes, those beautiful, terrible winter eyes that weren't empty anymore, held mine. "But I intend to find out."

He stood in one smooth motion, carrying me with him like I weighed nothing.

"The ceremony is postponed," he announced to the hall. "Everyone out."

Guards started ushering confused wolves toward the exits.

Kadrin looked down at me, still cradled in his arms.

"You wanted sanctuary," he said. "You have it. But everything has a price, little Tidecaller. And you just crashed into my life and broke a three-hundred-year curse."

"I didn't mean to."

"Too late." Something that might have been a smile flickered across his face. Just for a second. "You're mine now. Until I figure out what you are and why you make me feel."

He started walking, carrying me deeper into the fortress.

Away from the crowd.

Away from Valerius.

Toward whatever fate waited in the cursed king's castle.

And I realized with growing horror that I might have just traded one monster for another.
