Chapter 3 - Running Out of Time

Sera's POV

My heart stopped when I saw him across the throne room.

Valerius. Standing near the entrance, his eyes scanning the crowd like a predator hunting prey.

Looking for me.

I pressed myself against the stone pillar, trying to become invisible. My Tidecaller magic stirred inside me, responding to my fear. I could feel the moisture in the air, the water in the decorative fountains, the blood in everyone's veins.

But magic wouldn't save me. Not here. Not surrounded by hundreds of witnesses.

Valerius moved through the crowd with smooth confidence. People stepped aside for him automatically. He was handsome, charming, and powerful. Everything a wolf was supposed to want in a mate.

No one saw the monster underneath.

No one except Lyra and me. And Lyra was dead.

My twin sister's face flashed through my mind. Her final moments, transmitted through our twin bond before it snapped. The terror. The pain. The betrayal when she realized her fated mate was killing her.

"You should have submitted," Valerius had told her. "Your powers belong to me."

Then he'd snapped her neck.

I'd felt it happen. Felt her die. And I'd been running ever since.

Three months. Three months of hiding, moving, never staying anywhere long enough for him to track me. But he'd found me anyway.

Because of course he had. This was the Great Winter Binding Ceremony; every wolf in the territories attended. Including me, desperate and stupid enough to think I could blend into the crowd.

Valerius's head turned. His eyes swept past my pillar.

I held my breath.

He kept moving. But he was getting closer. Circling. He knew I was here somewhere.

My hands shook. I needed a plan. An exit strategy. Something.

But there was nowhere to go. Guards blocked every door for security at the ceremony. And even if I could get past them, Valerius was faster than I. Stronger. He'd catch me in the hallway and drag me away, and no one would stop him because I was his fated mate.

The Moon Goddess had decreed it. Which meant I was his property.

I hated the fated mate system. Hated that biology got to decide who you belonged to. Hated that no one questioned it when powerful wolves used the bond to control weaker ones.

My sister had loved Valerius at first. Believed the mate bond meant they were perfect for each other. By the time she realized he wanted to own her, not love her, it was too late.

I wouldn't make the same mistake.

"Sera." My name, whispered from behind.

I spun around. A woman stood there, middle-aged, with a kind face, wearing a servant's clothes.

"I'm Elara," she said quietly. "Your sister saved my daughter once. Used her Tidecaller magic to pull her from a riptide." Her eyes filled with tears. "I heard Lyra died. I'm so sorry."

"Thank you," I whispered.

"He's looking for you." Elara glanced toward Valerius. "The southern alpha. Everyone's whispering about it. They say you're his fated mate, and you ran away."

"He killed my sister."

Elara's eyes widened. "What?"

"The Moon Goddess paired them first. When Lyra refused to let him use her powers for dark magic, he murdered her." My voice shook. "Then he decided I'd do just as well. Tidecaller abilities run in families, after all."

"That's evil." Elara looked horrified. "Why hasn't anyone stopped him?"

"Because no one believes me. He's too powerful, too respected. And the fated mate bond is sacred." I laughed bitterly. "Who's going to take my word over his?"

"The King." Elara grabbed my arm. "King Kadrin enforces the ancient laws. He's cold and terrifying, but he's fair. If you could reach him."

"And tell him what? That I'm running from my fated mate? He'd send me right back to Valerius." I shook my head. "The King doesn't care about individual wolves. He cares about maintaining order."

"Maybe. But there's another option." Elara leaned closer. "The Law of Sanctuary. Anyone who sits upon the King's throne during a royal ceremony can claim protection. It's ancient magic, even the Alpha King has to honor it."

My breath caught. "That's insane. I'd have to run through the entire throne room, past all the guards, and throw myself onto the King's lap uninvited. He'd probably kill me himself for the insult."

"Maybe." Elara squeezed my arm. "But you're dead anyway if Valerius catches you. At least this way, you'd die trying to survive."

She was right. And I was out of options.

"Where is the King?" I asked.

"On the high throne. Center of the room." Elara pointed. "But, Sera, if you do this, you need to say the words exactly right. 'I claim sanctuary under the Ancient Law. I am unjustly hunted, and I demand the Alpha King's protection.' Nothing else will activate the magic."

"I claim sanctuary under the Ancient Law. I am unjustly hunted, and I demand the Alpha King's protection," I repeated. "Got it."

"Good luck." Elara slipped back into the crowd.

I looked toward the center of the room. I could just barely see the throne through the mass of celebrating wolves. And sitting on it, King Kadrin the Undying. The cursed king who hadn't felt emotion in three hundred years.

My only hope was a man with no heart.

Perfect.

Valerius's voice carried across the room. "Has anyone seen a young woman? Dark hair, about this tall? She's my fated mate, and she's not well. Grief over her sister's death has made her confused."

People murmured sympathetically. Some started looking around, wanting to help the concerned mate find his lost love.

I had maybe sixty seconds before someone spotted me.

I took a deep breath. Grandmother's voice echoed in my memory: When you're scared, be brave anyway. Courage isn't the absence of fear; it's acting despite it.

"I'm sorry, Lyra," I whispered. "I'm about to do something really stupid. If I die, at least I'll see you again."

Then I stepped out from behind the pillar and ran.

Heads turned. Someone shouted. I didn't stop.

I ran through the crowd, shoving past decorated wolves and startled guests. My Tidecaller magic surged, responding to my desperation. Moisture in the air coalesced around me like a shield.

"Sera!" Valerius's voice, sharp with command. "Stop!"

The fated mate bond yanked at me. Physical compulsion, trying to make me obey. But I'd spent three months learning to resist it.

I kept running.

Guards moved to intercept. I pulled water from a fountain and sent it crashing into them. They slipped on the suddenly wet floor.

The throne was ahead. And King Kadrin sat there like a statue, watching my chaos with cold, empty eyes.

Please, I prayed to whatever gods were listening. Please let this work.

Valerius caught up to me near the throne steps. His hand closed around my arm like iron.

"Enough of this." His voice was low, dangerous. "You're making a scene."

"Let go of me!" I tried to pull away, but he was too strong.

"You're my fated mate. The Moon Goddess decreed it. Stop fighting destiny."

"Destiny can go to hell!" I drove my elbow into his ribs.

He grunted but didn't release me. "Your sister understood eventually. You will too."

Red rage flooded my vision. "My sister died fighting you!"

"And look how that turned out." His grip tightened. "Come quietly, or I'll drag you out. Your choice."

I looked at the throne. At the cold king sitting there. At my last desperate chance.

I yanked my arm free with a burst of Tidecaller magic, using the water in Valerius's own blood to weaken his grip for just a second.

Then I ran.

Up the throne steps. Past the shocked guards. Straight toward the most powerful wolf in all the territories.

King Kadrin's ice-blue eyes tracked my movement. He didn't react. Didn't move. Just watched like I was an interesting puzzle.

I didn't give myself time to think. Didn't let fear stop me.

I threw myself onto his throne.

Onto his lap.

The moment my skin touched his, the world exploded.

Golden light erupted between us. Not just light power. Ancient magic that had been sleeping for centuries suddenly roared to life.

I gasped. So did the King.

But more shocking than the light was what I felt.

Warmth. Not from the magic. From him.

King Kadrin the Undying, the frozen king who felt nothing, was warm under my hands. And his eyes, his cold, empty eyes, suddenly blazed with something alive.

"I claim sanctuary under the Ancient Law!" My voice rang out clearly despite my terror. "I am unjustly hunted, and I demand the Alpha King's protection!"

The ancient magic settled over us like chains. Binding. Unbreakable.

King Kadrin stared at me. Really stared, like he was seeing me for the first time. Like he was seeing anything for the first time in three hundred years.

His hand came up and gripped my arm. Not hard. Gentle. But his fingers trembled.

"What did you do?" he whispered. His voice cracked. "What did you do to me?"

"I claimed sanctuary." I was shaking too. "I'm sorry. I had no choice."

"No." His other hand came up, touching his own chest like he was checking for something. "I felt that. I felt" He looked at me with something close to wonder. "I felt fear. For you. When he grabbed you."

My breath caught. "That's impossible. You're cursed. You can't feel anything."

"I couldn't." His eyes were wide. "For three hundred years, I felt nothing. And then you touched me, and" He broke off, looking almost panicked. "What are you?"

"I'm nobody. Just a Tidecaller running from a monster."

"Kadrin!" Valerius's voice cut through the moment. "She's lying! She's my fated mate! Return her to me!"

The King's eyes never left mine. But I felt something change in him. Something dark and dangerous is rising.

When he looked at Valerius, his face was no longer empty.

It was furious.

"No." The word vibrated with alpha power that made the entire throne room shake.

Valerius's confidence faltered. "What?"

"She claimed sanctuary. I grant it." King Kadrin stood, carefully steadying me. His hand stayed on my arm. "Sera Blackwater is under my protection. Any attempt to harm or claim her will be considered an act of war against the crown."

The throne room erupted in shocked whispers.

Valerius's face went from surprised to calculating. "This isn't over," he said quietly. Then louder: "The Moon Goddess herself designated Sera as my mate. You're defying divine will. That will have consequences."

He turned and left, taking his supporters with him.

I stood there, trembling, trying to process what just happened.

King Kadrin was still holding my arm. Still looking at me like I was a puzzle he couldn't solve.

"We need to talk," he said finally. "Privately."

"About what?"

"About why my curse just cracked." His voice was rough. "About why, for the first time in three centuries, I can feel my heart beating. And about why I'm suddenly terrified of what happens if you walk away."

He led me toward a side door. Guards followed at a distance.

As we left the throne room, I looked back once.

Valerius stood in the entrance, watching us leave. His face was calm, but his eyes promised violence.

He wasn't done. Not even close.

And I'd just made things infinitely more complicated by breaking a curse I didn't even know existed.

What had I done?
