Chapter 25 - Chapter 25: The Trap

Mira had been uneasy all morning.

Ever since Nathan left early for meetings with federal investigators, the penthouse felt too quiet. Victor Hale's shadow still lingered over everything. She tried to distract herself, folding baby clothes they had recently bought, but the anxiety refused to fade.

Then her phone rang. Unknown number.

She hesitated before answering.

"Hello?"

"Mrs. Nathan?" a woman's voice said quickly. "This is Swan Angels Private Hospital. Your father-in-law, Mr. Victor Olivero, has suffered a heart attack."

Mira's heart dropped.

"What?"

"He was admitted thirty minutes ago. We need next-of-kin to sign emergency paperwork."

"Nathan—Nathan should be there," Mira said quickly.

"We tried contacting him, but he's unreachable."

Mira looked at her phone.

Nathan had warned her before: Victor could be dangerous.

But heart attack?

If it was real…

"I'll come," she said quietly.

Mira knew something was wrong the moment she stepped into the hospital room.

Swan Angels Private Hospital was one of the most exclusive facilities in the city. The corridors were spotless, the lighting soft and warm, the air filled with the faint scent of antiseptic and lavender.

Yet the room felt… wrong.

Too quiet.

Too still.

The bed monitors were silent and Victor Olivero was sitting upright on the bed. Perfectly healthy!

Mira froze in the doorway.

"You… you're not sick."

Victor smiled slowly.

"No."

The word hung in the air like a blade. The door clicked shut behind her.

Mira's heart began pounding.

"You lied to get me here."

Victor swung his legs off the hospital bed and stood. Even in a simple patient robe he looked imposing — tall, controlled, dangerous.

"I needed to speak to you privately," he said calmly.

Mira stepped backward instinctively.

"You should be ashamed of yourself." Victor chuckled softly.

"Oh, Mira… you're still so spirited."

His eyes traveled slowly over her — lingering in a way that made her skin crawl.

"I never expected my son's wife," he continued smoothly, "to be the same girl who used to clean his penthouse."

The words struck her like cold water.

Her throat tightened.

"That was years ago."

"Yes." Victor stepped closer. "My former maid."

Mira clenched her fists.

"I worked hard for everything I have now."

Victor tilted his head slightly.

"I'm sure you did."

His gaze darkened as he looked at her more closely.

"And yet… seeing you now…"

He moved closer.

"…I must admit you've become quite attractive."

"Stay away from me."

Victor ignored the warning. His hand brushed lightly against her knee.

Mira gasped and jerked back.

"Don't touch me!"

Victor grabbed her wrist suddenly. His grip was strong.

"You married into my family," he said softly. "You should learn your place."

Fear shot through her chest. Her phone vibrated in her hand.

Nathan!

Mira answered instantly.

"Nathan—"

Victor tried to grab the phone.

Mira twisted away.

"Nathan!" she shouted.

On the other end, Nathan's voice sharpened instantly.

"Mira? What's wrong?"

Victor grabbed her arm again, pulling her closer. Panic surged through her.

"Swan Angels Hospital!" she cried loudly.

Victor cursed under his breath.

She shouted again, louder this time.

"Swan Angels Hospital!"

Nathan's voice turned deadly calm.

"I'm coming." The call ended.

Victor's expression hardened.

"You shouldn't have done that."

He shoved the phone aside and grabbed her again.

Mira fought back, pushing at his chest.

"Let me go!"

The struggle sent them crashing against the hospital bed.

Victor's hand caught the front of her blouse. Buttons popped loose under the force. Fabric pulled apart.

Mira clutched the torn blouse desperately, trying to hold it closed.

"Stop!"

Victor's grip tightened on her waist as he forced her down against the mattress.

"You think Nathan can save you?" he muttered.

Mira kicked and struggled.

"Help!" she screamed.

Her voice echoed down the hallway.

Footsteps rushed closer andt he door burst open. Two nurses rushed in.

"What's going on here?!"

Victor released her immediately, stepping back.

Mira scrambled off the bed, shaking, clutching her torn blouse.

"That man attacked me!" she cried.

The nurses moved quickly, placing themselves between Mira and Victor.

One of them grabbed the emergency call button. Security alarms sounded faintly down the hall.

Victor's expression darkened with fury. "You idiots have no idea who you're interfering with."

Before anyone could respond....the door slammed open again.

Nathan stormed inside.

His eyes locked instantly on Mira. Her blouse torn and her hands trembling. Fear written across her face. Something inside Nathan snapped. He crossed the room in two strides. His fist slammed into Victor's jaw.

The sound echoed sharply through the room.

Victor staggered backward into the wall.

Nathan grabbed his collar and drove another punch into him.

"You touch her again," Nathan said in a low, terrifying voice, "and I will end you."

Victor collapsed against the hospital bed. Nathan turned immediately to Mira. She was shaking uncontrollably now. Nathan removed his jacket quickly and wrapped it around her shoulders, shielding her.

"It's okay," he said softly.

Mira collapsed into his arms, crying.

"I was so scared."

Nathan held her tightly.

"I'm here."

Behind them, the nurses exchanged shocked looks. One quietly lifted her phone and another did the same. Photos were taken quickly, snapping photos of Victor on the floor.

Nathan shielding Mira with his jacket.

None of them realized those images would soon spread far beyond the hospital walls. Nathan guided Mira toward the door. "We're leaving." She nodded weakly, clinging to his arm.

As they walked out, Nathan looked back once at his father. His expression was no longer controlled. It was pure fury. Outside, in the quiet hospital corridor, Mira whispered shakily,

"He tricked me."

Nathan cupped her face gently.

"I know."

Her tears fell freely now.

"I thought he was dying." Nathan's jaw tightened.

"It ends now."

Mira looked up at him.

"What do you mean?"

Nathan's voice was colder than she had ever heard.

"I've tried doing this the right way."

His eyes burned with determination.

"But after tonight…" Nathan looked back toward the hospital room where Victor still stood.

"…I'm finishing it."

Because Victor Olivero had just crossed the final line.

And this time...Nathan was done holding back.
