Chapter 133: The Dragon Thief
Viserys stared blankly as his dragon egg emitted clear cracking sounds, one after another. The scaly shell of the dragon egg continuously broke apart. The first thing to emerge was a pale yellow wing. The small dragon wing flapped twice, bringing out the body attached to it.
It was a young dragon, entirely pale yellow with not a single speck of color. Its wings were unusually thick and broad, though not as exaggeratedly large as Morning's. Instead, they were closer to the word "heavy." The body connected to the wings glowed like crystal under the light of the greenhouse fire. The young dragon's body was also very sturdy, especially its legs. Unlike the lizard-like legs of other dragons, this young dragon's legs were more akin to an elephant's or a rhinoceros's. Its claws were not as sharp as those of other dragons, and the horn-like spikes on its body were also more inclined to be stout rather than sharp like Morghul's or the Red Queen Meleys's.
The young dragon let out a muffled cry. Viserys finally reacted, scrambling forward. He saw the young dragon's head. Like its body, the young dragon had a thick, short neck and a drooping gular pouch. Normally, this feature should only appear when a dragon ages, like Vhagar, and now Vermithor was also showing a tendency to grow a gular pouch. But for a newborn young dragon to have a gular pouch… it was truly something seen once in a lifetime.
Compared to its sturdy body, the young dragon's head appeared exceptionally small, or rather, small and broad. On the young dragon's bird-beak-like mouth was a thick, single horn. Unlike Stormcloud's slender, sharp horn, this pale yellow young dragon's horn was more like a stone, sparkling brightly under the firelight. The young dragon only had this one horn, but along its neck grew a row of stone-pillar-like horn spikes, extending all the way to the base of its wings.
Shifting the gaze to its tail, this young dragon's tail forked at the end, splitting into two long tailfins. If Viserys were to evaluate it, this forked tail might be the only "delicate" part of this young dragon.
The next moment, another young dragon descended from above, landing squarely on Viserys's young dragon, making the pale yellow young dragon stumble. The pale yellow young dragon was about to roar back fiercely but closed its mouth instantly when it saw the young dragon that shook its head and stood up.
Viserys also froze.
Nothing else, that sapphire-like young dragon was simply too beautiful.
If he couldn't be sure that the scales on this young dragon were indeed scales, Viserys would have almost thought that countless sapphires were embedded in the young dragon's body. Light blue dorsal fins ran from the top of its head all the way down its back. Its buffalo-like dragon horns were still very tender at this time. Fish-fin-like appendages hung down from the young dragon's cheeks, and two long fin-like strips dangled all the way to the young dragon's chest, like two dragon whiskers.
The young dragon's body was slender and beautiful, its tail long, forming a gem-like tailfin at the end. Its broad dragon wings transitioned from deep blue to a light blue on the membrane, like the sky itself.
It could be said that the moment Viserys saw this young dragon, only one thought remained in his mind:
How could this young dragon be so beautiful?
Then, looking at the sturdy young dragon that hatched from his own dragon egg, which looked like a miniature version of Vhagar, Viserys suddenly felt a sense of utter despair.
If Viserys hadn't timely recalled Morning's appearance, the boy might have been depressed for a while. However, Viserys quickly came to terms with it.
Morning had grown to look like that, and Saera never showed any disdain whenever she visited Morning at Dragonmont. She polished its scales, whispered secrets to the young dragon, and fed it.
His own young dragon, at least, had a crystal-like luster. Although it looked sturdy, it was at least much better-looking than Morning.
There was nothing to dislike.
Finally convincing himself, Viserys mustered his courage and prepared to touch his young dragon, only to see his young dragon not even glance at him, engrossed in circling the sapphire-colored young dragon.
Viserys instantly felt utterly dismayed.
"Dragons are also living beings, and they have their own likes and dislikes."
Daeron Varezys's voice came from behind.
Viserys then noticed that Daeron and Rhaegar had already stood behind him at some point. Grand Maester Ammar followed Daeron, carrying a bucket of cooked lamb.
He reached out, grabbed a piece of meat, and threw it in front of the two young dragons.
The pale yellow young dragon pounced on the meat, tore off a small piece, chewed it, and then quickly carried the meat over to the sapphire-colored young dragon, neatly putting it down and even giving it a nudge.
Viserys wished he could find a hole to crawl into and hide, while Daeron and Rhaegar watched the interaction between the two young dragons with smiles.
This kind of interaction was rare now.
Even Vermithor and Silverwing didn't have this kind of interaction. As for the other dragons, well, perhaps friendly fights were the norm.
"Congratulations, Prince Viserys."
Daeron patted the boy's shoulder.
"You also have your own dragon now. When Rhaenyra returns, you can show off to her, haha."
After marrying Rhaegar, Rhaenyra, missing her family, had sailed back to High Tide for a family visit, just in time for Corlys's funeral, so she hadn't returned yet.
Viserys nodded somewhat helplessly.
He kept reminding himself that his dragon was also special, that all dragons were like this. After all, this was a dragon, the dragon he had longed for day and night.
He finally managed to accept the fact that his dragon had some special preferences.
He picked out a piece of fatty meat from Ammar's meat bucket and threw it to the pale yellow young dragon.
The young dragon didn't even look at it.
Only after the sapphire-colored young dragon had eaten its fill and let out a satisfied cry did the pale yellow young dragon slowly crawl to the fatty meat.
After confirming that the sapphire-colored young dragon was full, it began to tear into the fatty meat, making Viserys constantly comfort himself internally.
"Have you thought of a name for your dragon?"
Daeron saw Viserys's embarrassment and helped him out.
Viserys then refocused his attention.
Yes, a dragon needed a good name.
What would be good?
Naming it "White Crystal" based on its physical characteristics?
No, no, it didn't sound good.
Stick to the original plan.
"Igaras, its name is Igaras," Viserys said.
"Igaras, ah."
Daeron nodded.
"The god of all creatures that can walk, swim, or fly in the Valyrian pantheon. The creator of the first dragon. Naming your dragon after him is very good. It's a good name."
Viserys's gaze turned to the sapphire-colored young dragon that had his Igaras utterly captivated and asked curiously,
"Uncle Daeron, have you thought of its name?"
"Sarafasas."
Rhaegar glanced at his elder brother and, after receiving his brother's nod, answered the boy's question.
"We discussed this name on the way, and it is very suitable for this young dragon. This word comes from Ancient Valyria, meaning 'Eye of the Stars.'"
Daeron secretly regretted it in his heart.
This name was originally intended for the bonded dragon of Diana's unborn child, but he didn't expect the dragon egg to hatch first.
There was no other way, so he could only give this already thought-out name to this newborn little dragon.
Viserys looked at the two young dragons sticking together—or rather, Igaras unilaterally sticking to Sarafasas—and still couldn't help but sigh.
It was too embarrassing.
Just as they were discussing the newborn young dragons in Dragonmont, outside Summerhall Market, Ser Hugh checked the list.
Basically, all the luxury items to be purchased had been bought.
As for the last two gifts on the list, a sharkskin scabbard and a scepter made of gold with dragon decorations, Hugh decided he would personally make these two gifts, as he could do it better than the goldsmiths in the Summerhall Market.
He couldn't let Valarr Varezys's kindness in knighting him go to waste.
Just as he was slowly outlining the design of the scepter in his mind, the voices of a boy and a girl suddenly interrupted his thoughts.
Hugh was about to yell back, but then he saw his own precious daughter in front of him, and his expression instantly softened.
"Lia, what are you doing here?"
Then the knight-blacksmith saw the two white-haired boys trying to crowd behind her.
"Addam, Alyn, what are you two brats doing here? Why aren't you helping your mother at home? Do I have to teach you a lesson for Dennis?"
Hugh's face changed in an instant. He scooped his daughter close while fumbling for his war hammer at his waist.
"Uncle Hugh, something happened." The quickest, Elin, pulled his brother next to him and, like pouring beans from a bamboo tube, systematically told Hugh everything he had seen and heard at the villa. "I heard them cursing Prince Draezell and planning to steal dragons."
"What did you say?" Hugh, both shocked and furious, released his daughter and grabbed Elin's collar. "Swear to the Seven Gods that what you're saying is true." "Father, Elin is telling the truth, I saw it too." Lia, anxious, grabbed her father's arm and said loudly. "You saw it too?" Hugh put Elin down and re-confirmed with his daughter, his expression changing again. "You brats, watch these things and Lia for me. I'll be right back." Hugh immediately swung onto his horse, spurred its flanks, and galloped out like the wind. He needed to gather his squad and report the situation to the city hall, first raid the villa, and then immediately pursue these dragon thieves.
But they found nothing. When Hugh led his men, smashed open the villa's gate with a hammer, and rushed in, only the male and female slaves who had been left there remained in the villa. They didn't know what their masters had gone to do either.
"Hugh, I reckon they've probably gone outside the city." Dennis, who had been urgently summoned, rode back on his warhorse. "Alright, I'll ride fast to Dragon Nest City to see Lord Aslan. Hugh, you take everyone and pursue them outside the city." Daenerys made a decisive move and immediately spurred her horse to run out of the city. Hugh nodded and called out to the two boys. "You two have seen those dragon thieves, right?" Adam nodded. "Good, then you two follow me, we'll look outside the city. Tom, leave twenty men to continue patrolling, the rest of the brothers follow me out of the city to Lord Ago's ranch."
At this moment, in a valley.
Three Volantines, accompanied by several strong, silver-haired slaves, were drooling as they watched Vermax tearing into a fat sheep in the valley.
It had grown incredibly fast in the past two years, almost growing every single day. After seeing Vermax's growth rate, Ray decisively categorized it, Vermithor, Shadow Nightmare, and Star Song into his secret file's "Large Dragon Species."
"I didn't expect this to be a large dragon." Hogg Belarris licked his lips. "Taraz, you go try."
Taraz Syrakson nodded, slowly straightened up, and approached Vermax step by step.
Vermax smelled the scent of a stranger, but it also smelled the dragon blood flowing within the person, so it merely glanced at Taraz and continued to gnaw on the lamb.
Taraz got closer and closer. He secretly rejoiced, "Indeed, my bloodline is effective." He looked at the approaching Vermax and said in high valyrian, "Dragon, obey commands, stop eating."
Vermax turned its head to look at him in confusion, then shook its head and continued eating.
Who is this person? Directly telling a dragon to stop eating. If it weren't for the dragon blood truly flowing within him, Vermax wouldn't have indulged him. It would have spat a mouthful of dragonfire long Ago.
"Damn it, this beast." Taraz cursed under his breath and shouted again, "Dragon, obey commands, look at me. Submit to me." His feet, however, didn't stop, slowly moving to Vermax's side.
Vermax couldn't take it anymore. It turned and roared at Taraz, nearly knocking him flying. Taraz quickly steadied himself, somewhat confused, and touched his face. This wasn't right. According to the family's hidden books, dragons should be very obedient in front of a Dragon Lord. Never mind, just ride it first.
Taraz reached out to grab the saddle strap hanging from the saddle. Vermax immediately moved sideways, dodging his hand, and roared again.
"Beast, obey commands, submit to me! Taraz of House Syrakson commands you, submit to me!" Taraz reached out again to grab the saddle strap, but he didn't hear his companions shouting behind him.
When he felt the heat above his head and looked up.
He could only see an orange-red glow and sharp teeth.
"Roar."
