Chapter 133 Chasing the Dragon Thief
The orange-red dragon flame poured down, and Talaz Sylaxen, who had just reached out, was burned to a crisp before he could even scream. Vermax took a bite, chewed a few times, then shook his head, spitting a large, unidentifiable mass to the side, and soared into the sky, spreading his wings.
Hogg hadn't even reacted to what had happened when Ben picked him up and placed him on a strong tiger-striped warhorse. "You stay and block those barbarians for the master," Ben ordered in High Valyrian. He mounted another horse, spurred its flank, and turned to flee towards the Stormlands.
Ben Oonebal was very perceptive; not long after he and Hogg fled, several howling sounds came from outside the valley. More than a dozen mounted Dothraki rushed into the valley. They were different from normal Dothraki, each wearing heavy lamellar armor. The Dothraki man with many long braids leading the group was the first to spot the silver-haired slaves lingering at the edge of the valley.
"Who are you? Why are you on the grasslands of Khal Ago and Great Khal Dragon Sand?" the man asked loudly, holding his hunting bow.
A silver-haired slave roared and charged at the man with a raised knife, but just as he lifted his knife, a Dothraki warrior beside the man immediately drew his bow and shot an arrow through the slave's throat.
"Leave one alive, kill the rest."
Seeing these slaves dare to brandish knives on the sacred grassland, the man also became enraged. He shot down another silver-haired slave with an arrow, and the Dothraki warriors roared as they galloped closer, shooting a few arrows, leaving only one of the silver-haired slaves alive.
The man drew his arakh, pointed it at the remaining slave's neck, and asked fiercely, "I'll ask you one more time, who are you, and why are you on the grasslands of Great Khal Dragon Sand and Khal Ago?"
The slave opened his mouth, revealing his tongueless oral cavity.
The man couldn't hold back and chopped off the slave's head with one strike. The warrior who had been inspecting the ashes in the center of the grassland returned, saying with a tremor, "Mora Ko, the goats we sacrificed to the Great Khal's Winged Steeds were not eaten completely. I also found human bones."
"Ah ah ah ah!"
Mora roared in pain. He was Ago's elder, and Ago's most trusted Ko. His khas had a full five hundred screaming warriors. It was their great honor to offer cattle, sheep, and horses to Great Khal Dragon Sand's Winged Steeds. Each of the seventeen Kos under Khal Ago wanted to compete for this honor, and only his offerings had always been without fault.
But he never expected Vermax to not finish eating this time, to not finish eating!
"Go back and gather our boys! No, get the women moving too! Bring back the fellows who trespassed on our sacred grassland!"
Fortunately, Ben and Hogg ran fast. If they had been a step slower, they would have faced pursuit from several thousand screaming warriors and screaming female warriors, as well as the city guard led by Hugh.
But unfortunately, they ran too fast. Before another Ko, Meng Wu'er, led his khas to surround them, Ben successfully led Hogg out of the valley and into the jurisdiction of the Stormlands.
Although several Kos wanted to continue the pursuit, they also knew that they could only hunt on the valley and grasslands granted by the Great Khal, and not enter other lords' territories.
"Brother Hugh, I'm very sorry."
Mora, leading his men, dejectedly greeted Hugh and the city guard who had arrived at the valley entrance.
"We were a step late. Before the cavalry of Ko Meng Wu'er and Ko Zhe Bei blocked the valley entrance, they might have already escaped."
Hugh, who had already seen Vermax fly back to Dragon Nest Tower, had now put his mind at ease. Aslan Rondell, upon receiving the news, also sent word to the nearby Silver Blood Army barracks and estates, but it was likely too late to catch anyone. As long as the dragon was safe, it was fine.
"Mora," Hugh recalled Mora's position carefully, "Mora Ko, it's alright. We have already mobilized personnel to check the ports and all checkpoints. If they dare to remain in the Borderland Principality, they will definitely be found."
Mora recalled Khal Ago's anger just now. That young man respected his elders, but upon learning that outsiders were wandering on Vermax's foraging grounds, he couldn't help but scold Mora. If he hadn't truly made no mistakes, Mora knew Ago would have loved to cut off all his braids as punishment.
"If they are found, Brother Hugh, please hand them over to us. Khal Ago has decided to give them a lesson they will never forget."
Hugh nodded. To be honest, he also wanted to teach these audacious fellows a lesson.
Dragon's Nest City, Silverblood Tower.
"Big brother, someone has already tried to steal a dragon right under our noses."
Valarr, who had just rushed back, ran to his brother's side with a shocked expression. Dragonzel was leaning by the window, looking down at Summerhall.
"If I'm not mistaken, it should be those people from Volantis."
"It's those bastards."
Valarr angrily punched the wall.
"If we weren't keeping such a close eye on the dragon eggs, and if Dragon Nest Tower weren't entirely staffed by our own people, I bet they would even dare to lay hands on the dragon eggs."
"What wouldn't they dare to do?"
Dragonzel straightened up.
"They always boast of being the pure descendants of the Dragon Kings. Those Tiger Party fools, they never understand their own weight. How did the Century of Blood end? It's only been a little over a hundred years, and they've forgotten everything."
Dragonzel said coldly. He was also angered, not because the dragon was almost ridden away—he had full confidence in Vermax; that was Jaehaerys's dragon, not just anyone could conquer it, especially not those arrogant fools from Volantis.
But he was truly angered that someone dared to covet a dragon, and one of his own family's dragons at that. Did they really think Dragonzel had spent the past two years focusing on raising his child and managing his territory, and could no longer wield a sword or ride a dragon?
But Dragonzel quickly realized that he couldn't do too much. After all, the Tiger Party envoys from Volantis had already left, and who knew where they came from? He couldn't just fly back and set Volantis ablaze without any evidence, could he? There were still Elephant Party members in the city.
"Write a letter to the Evenstar of Tarth, asking him to keep an eye on transit ships. Then write to King's Landing, Dragonstone, Driftmark, and Claw Isle, telling them to watch out for ships and to immediately inform me if they find anyone with silver hair and purple eyes. I'll let them personally experience what 'Dragon's Wrath' means," Dragonzel said.
Valarr nodded and rushed out to find the maester to write the letters.
Dragonzel sat back down, fuming, and picked up a slip of paper beside him.
It was Aegon's Kingsguard candidate list.
Dragonzel scanned it, his attention immediately drawn to the names on the list.
They were all renowned good knights.
