Chapter 35 - Chapter 35: The First Encounter

The first light of dawn barely touched the mountaintops, yet Ji Xia Sect was already alive with movement. The disciples, awakened by the crisp morning air, were gathered in the courtyard, practicing cultivation and refining their techniques. The three guardian beasts—Vorath, Aetherion, and Tianlong—stood vigilantly around the sect, their immense auras rippling through the air like an unyielding shield.

Yan Fu, standing at the center, observed the new disciples carefully. Their progress over the past few days had been remarkable, but he knew the true test of their skills would come from outside forces—rival sects drawn by the rumors of Ji Xia Sect's rebirth and the presence of three divine beasts.

Li Fei stood beside him, a hint of excitement and tension in his gaze. "Master… I sense something. A disturbance in the forest to the north. It's faint but deliberate, not a natural presence."

Yan Fu narrowed his hazel-green eyes, feeling the subtle ripple of spiritual energy. "Indeed… they've arrived. Prepare the disciples."

Vorath lifted his massive head, amber eyes glowing faintly. "Finally… an actual test. Let's see if they are worthy of standing before our sect."

Aetherion's turquoise eyes glimmered. "They won't come unprepared. Remain vigilant. Even minor attacks can reveal a lot about their intentions."

Moments later, a group of figures appeared along the forest edge. Cloaked in dark robes, they moved with precision, their presence marked by suppressed energy. Though their aura was not overwhelmingly strong, Yan Fu immediately recognized the unmistakable mark of trained cultivators: scouts from a rival sect, likely sent to evaluate Ji Xia Sect's strength and potential.

Yan Fu's calm voice carried over the courtyard. "Disciples, observe carefully. This is your first real encounter with outsiders. Do not underestimate them."

The scouts paused at the edge of the courtyard, their eyes scanning the sect. The rumors had not exaggerated. The three guardian beasts were indeed present, their presence alone radiating power strong enough to deter ordinary cultivators. Vorath's massive form emitted a low rumble, while Tianlong's scales shimmered faintly with crackling energy. Aetherion's mane glimmered as he stepped closer, his soft turquoise eyes calmly observing the intruders.

One of the scouts finally stepped forward, his voice carrying clearly. "Ji Xia Sect… we have come to observe. Nothing more. We only wish to ascertain your strength."

Yan Fu's lips curved into a faint smile. "Observe all you want. But remember, the guardians of this sect do not tolerate deception. Step closer, and you may not leave unscathed."

The air thickened instantly. The disciples could feel the immense pressure emanating from their master and the three divine beasts. Even the faintest movement in the air seemed magnified, a warning to those who might test Ji Xia Sect's patience.

A small murmur ran through the courtyard. Even the most confident scouts were taken aback by the overwhelming presence of power.

Li Fei's voice was quiet but firm. "Master… shall we engage them?"

Yan Fu's gaze swept over the scouts. "Not yet. Let them make their next move. Our goal is not unnecessary conflict. Observation first. Response second."

But as if on cue, the lead scout stepped closer, revealing a faint spiritual mark glowing on his wrist—the symbol of a rival sect known for aggression and cunning. "We are here to test your strength. If your sect proves formidable, perhaps negotiations can follow."

Zhao Tian, who had been quietly observing, stepped forward. His calm demeanor did not waver. "Negotiation is unnecessary. True strength is measured through action, not words."

The scout's expression darkened. "Bold words for a young cultivator. Let's see if your skill matches your confidence."

Without warning, the first scout drew a slender sword, its edge gleaming as it cut through the morning mist. The air around it crackled faintly, revealing the latent spiritual energy he had accumulated. A battle was imminent.

Li Fei stepped forward instinctively, silver hair glinting as his aura flared. "I'll handle him."

Yan Fu raised a hand. "Hold. Observe first."

The scout lunged at Zhao Tian, his movements precise and deadly. Zhao Tian's eyes narrowed slightly. With barely a shift in his stance, he sidestepped and sent a subtle wave of energy forward. The scout's sword was repelled, his strike interrupted by an invisible force.

The courtyard gasped. The invisible energy was subtle, yet powerful enough to control the battlefield without overtly harming the attacker.

Vorath's deep rumble echoed through the air. "Not bad… very precise."

Tianlong coiled gracefully, ready to strike if necessary, while Aetherion's calm presence seemed to amplify Zhao Tian's natural aura.

The scout stepped back, reassessing his opponent. "This… is different. He's not ordinary."

Yan Fu finally raised his staff, releasing a faint golden aura that swept across the courtyard. The air itself seemed to hum with energy. "This is a demonstration of the Ji Xia Sect's strength. Understand it, and know your place."

The other scouts hesitated, feeling the combined presence of master, disciples, and divine beasts pressing down on them.

Li Fei's aura flared, joining Zhao Tian's, creating a subtle yet formidable barrier. Their synchronization, though unpracticed, was natural and instinctive.

Zhao Tian's eyes glimmered as he unleashed a small demonstration of his cultivation technique, the energy forming elegant patterns in the air, both defensive and controlling. The scout's movements became constrained, unable to fully release his power without overextending.

The tension was palpable. The courtyard was alive with spiritual energy, a silent warning echoing through the mountains.

Yan Fu's gaze swept over the disciples. "Remember this feeling. Power is not just in cultivation but in presence, strategy, and control."

The scouts finally recognized the futility of a frontal confrontation. Their leader signaled a retreat, though not without a parting message: "Ji Xia Sect… you will be remembered. We will return."

As the figures vanished into the forest, Vorath exhaled, a low, approving rumble escaping his throat. "They are cautious now. Good. Let them know the consequences of underestimating us."

Aetherion stepped forward, his mane shimmering. "This was merely an observation. Greater challenges will come, but today your sect has shown potential."

Li Fei turned to Yan Fu. "Master… they were strong, but we handled them."

Yan Fu's hazel-green eyes narrowed slightly, looking toward the horizon. "This is only the beginning. We've made our presence known. But remember… rivals are already gathering. The coming months will decide the future of Ji Xia Sect."

Zhao Tian stood silently beside him, his aura calm yet infinitely deep, as if already calculating strategies and outcomes in his mind. Yan Fu's subtle smile grew.

The real trials are just beginning. But with these disciples and these guardians, Ji Xia Sect will not fall again.

The wind swept over the mountain peaks, carrying the faint echoes of distant voices—rival sects moving, spies reporting, and the dawn of conflicts that would soon engulf the entire region.

The first encounter had ended, but the storm was only beginning.
