Ash's POV
Ash stepped out of the truck before Aurora could move.
His eyes swept across the gathered wolves and he read every emotion on their faces. Confusion. Anger. Betrayal. His pack had lost family members to Northern Pack raids. They'd lost warriors, friends, children. And now their Alpha had just driven into the compound with the Northern Beta sitting in his passenger seat.
He could feel their rage like heat radiating off them.
But he also felt something else. The pack bond connecting him to every wolf present. The understanding that they were waiting for him to explain. Waiting for him to tell them this made sense.
Ash walked around the truck and opened Aurora's door.
She hesitated for a moment, staring out at the crowd like she was looking at a firing squad. He could feel her fear through the connection between them. Could feel her second-guessing her choice.
He extended his hand.
Aurora took it and Ash pulled her out of the truck, immediately stepping between her and his pack. Not because he was hiding her. Because he was claiming her.
He let his Alpha aura rise. Not aggressive. Not a threat. Just a clear statement that this female was under his protection and anything that happened to her would answer to him.
The crowd went silent.
"This is Aurora," Ash announced, his voice carrying the weight of Alpha authority across every wolf present. "My fated mate. She's under my protection. Anyone who disrespects her answers to me personally."
The words hung in the cold night air like a challenge.
A few wolves shifted on their feet. Some looked at each other with confusion. None of them challenged him but he could see the questions forming. The doubts. The anger that their Alpha had bonded with the enemy.
Damon stepped forward, his dark eyes sharp with calculation. His Beta's face was unreadable but Ash knew how to read this wolf. Knew the tactical mind running through scenarios. Knew he was already planning how this was going to complicate pack dynamics.
"You brought an enemy Beta into our pack house?" Damon's tone was careful. Not quite insubordinate but close.
Ash met his Beta's gaze steadily. They'd fought together for eight years. They'd bled together. They'd survived together when Ash was taking over the pack and consolidating power. Damon knew him better than almost anyone.
Which meant Damon needed to understand this.
"I brought my mate home," Ash said quietly. "There's a difference."
The two males stared at each other for a long moment. Around them, the pack was watching, waiting to see if the Beta would challenge the Alpha's decision.
Damon finally nodded slowly. A acceptance that wasn't quite agreement. A backing down that came from respect and years of loyalty.
"We'll talk later," Damon said.
Ash inclined his head. They absolutely would talk. But not in front of the pack.
A female with honey brown skin and dark curls approached Aurora carefully. She moved with the gentle confidence of someone used to handling injured wolves. The pack healer.
Maya.
"I'm Maya," the healer said, her voice warm in a way that made Aurora's shoulders relax slightly. "Let me show you where you'll stay."
Aurora looked at Ash uncertainly. He could feel what she wanted through the bond. Wanted him to come with her. Wanted him to stay close. Wanted the security of his presence while she navigated a pack that had every reason to hate her.
His wolf wanted exactly the same thing.
The incomplete mate bond was pulling at him, demanding he follow her inside. Demanding he keep her close. Demanding he claim what was his before someone tried to take her away.
But Ash forced himself to nod.
"Go," he said gently. "Rest. We'll talk tomorrow."
Aurora hesitated for another moment. Then she turned and followed Maya toward the pack house, her shoulders tense like she expected someone to attack her from behind.
Nobody did. Ash's presence had made it clear that would not end well for them.
He watched her disappear inside the house, the mate bond stretching between them but still holding. Still connecting them even across the physical distance.
Then Damon moved closer, his voice quiet enough that only Ash could hear.
"We need to talk about—"
"Not now," Ash cut him off.
Damon's expression didn't change but something flickered across his face. Something that made Ash's wolf go very still.
His Beta was looking toward the house. Looking at a window where a small silhouette had appeared. A child's shape. Small and familiar in a way that made Ash's entire body go rigid.
Damon turned back to him and met his eyes.
And in that look, Ash saw knowledge. Saw recognition. Saw understanding that Damon had just seen something that changed everything.
The child had his eyes.
Silver eyes. Just like Ash's.
Just like only his bloodline carried.
Ash felt the moment the full weight of what that meant hit his Beta. Felt it shift something between them. Felt the questions forming in Damon's mind. Felt the understanding that there was a story here. A secret. A truth that Ash had never told him.
A child.
Ash's child.
In his pack house.
Waiting.
Damon's jaw clenched and he turned away without speaking. But the silence between them was louder than any accusation could have been.
