Chapter 6 - The Journey South

Aurora's POV

Aurora couldn't stop shaking.

Her hands were trembling so badly she had to grip the seat to keep them still. Her heart was racing like she'd been running for miles. Her mind kept replaying the moment she said those two words that changed everything.

I accept.

Ash drove in silence, his hands steady on the steering wheel, his silver eyes flicking to her every few seconds like he was checking to make sure she was still there. Still real. Still choosing to be here with him instead of begging to go back.

The truck moved fast along the empty highway, putting distance between them and the Summit. Between her and the Northern Pack. Between her and the only life she'd ever known.

She was exiled. Stripped of her title. Declared a traitor by the only Alpha who'd ever cared about her.

Hours ago she was Beta of the Northern Pack. Hours ago her future was clear and certain. She was going to stay loyal to Ryker. She was going to follow orders. She was going to be exactly what he needed for as long as he needed it.

Then she smelled sandalwood and storm and everything broke.

"You okay?" Ash's voice was quiet. Careful. Like he was asking permission to speak to her.

Aurora wanted to answer honestly. Wanted to tell him that no, she was absolutely not okay. That her entire world had shattered. That she didn't know if she'd made the right choice or the worst mistake of her life.

Instead she nodded because words felt impossible right now.

The mate bond hummed between them, warm and steady and absolutely insistent. Every time Ash shifted in his seat, she felt it. Every time he turned the steering wheel, the connection pulsed with approval. Her beast was satisfied. Her wolf was content for the first time in her entire life, purring like it had finally found what it was looking for.

Her human mind was screaming that this was wrong.

She was supposed to hate the Southern Pack. She was supposed to view Ash as an enemy. She was supposed to be loyal to Ryker and the Northern territory and everything she'd bled for.

Instead she was in a truck with the enemy, heading toward foreign territory, and her body was responding to his presence like he was oxygen and she'd been suffocating her entire life.

"We're crossing the border soon," Ash said after a long stretch of silence.

Aurora looked out the window and watched the landscape change. The Northern Pack territory was rugged and wild, forests thick and old, mountains looming in the distance. Beautiful but harsh. Everything about it matched the pack's philosophy. Strong. Dangerous. Not to be approached.

The border marker appeared as a simple wooden sign. Nothing fancy. Nothing that screamed "turn back or die." Just a quiet warning that you were entering different territory.

Ash crossed it without hesitation.

And everything changed.

Aurora had spent her entire life hearing about the Southern Pack wasteland. Ryker had described it in dark terms. Lawless. Savage. A place where wolves ran wild and there was no real structure or safety. She'd imagined chaos when she pictured Southern territory.

What she saw instead made her catch her breath.

Organized communities appeared as they drove deeper. Houses arranged in neat patterns. Gardens that looked tended and cared for. Wolves training together in groups, moving with coordination and purpose. Children playing together in open spaces, laughing without fear.

It looked like a real pack. Like a real home.

"This isn't what I expected," Aurora whispered.

"I know," Ash said quietly. "Ryker made sure you wouldn't."

The words hung between them. Heavy with implication. Heavy with the understanding that everything she'd been taught about the Southern Pack might be a lie.

Just like everything Ryker had told her about his feelings had been a lie.

They drove through the territory for another twenty minutes. Aurora watched wolves stop what they were doing to acknowledge Ash's truck passing. Watched the respect in their eyes. Watched the way they moved with confidence instead of fear.

This wasn't a pack ruled by terror. This was a pack ruled by something else.

Ash finally spoke when they were almost at his house.

"You can leave anytime. I won't force you to stay."

It was the kindest thing anyone had ever said to her.

Aurora wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe that she had a choice. That if she decided this was all wrong, she could just get out of the truck and somehow find her way back to the Northern Pack and beg for forgiveness.

But they both knew that was a lie.

The incomplete mate bond was already pulling at her insides. Already making her skin ache where she wasn't touching him. Already creating a hunger that had nothing to do with food and everything to do with the connection binding them together.

If she left, the bond would drive her insane. If she left, he'd go insane. The pull between fated mates was like gravity. You could fight it for a while but eventually it would drag you under.

"I'm not leaving," Aurora said.

She felt more than saw Ash's shoulders relax. The mate bond hummed with satisfaction.

The Southern Pack house appeared through the trees suddenly. It was massive, sprawling, made of stone and dark wood. Lights were on inside. Smoke rose from the chimneys. It looked warm and welcoming and absolutely nothing like the cold fortress of the Northern Pack compound.

But as Ash pulled into the driveway, Aurora's stomach dropped.

Dozens of wolves were waiting outside.

They stood in organized groups across the front lawn, watching the truck approach with expressions that ranged from curious to hostile to absolutely murderous. They were warriors. They were trained. They were looking at Aurora like she was poison that had just been brought into their home.

A dark-skinned male with tribal tattoos covering his arms stood at the front of the group. His arms were crossed. His expression was carved from stone.

Damon, Aurora's mind supplied. Ash's Beta. His best friend.

His eyes locked on her with the kind of intensity that said he was already calculating whether she was a threat.

The truck came to a stop and the quiet was deafening.

Ash didn't move. Didn't reach for the door. Just sat there holding the steering wheel like he was bracing for impact.

Through the windshield, Aurora could see more wolves joining the crowd. Some she recognized from the Summit. Some she didn't. All of them were watching her like she was a Southern Pack wolf who'd just brought a Northern warrior into her home.

Which was basically what was happening.

The mate bond pulsed between her and Ash, nervous now. Uncertain. Like it understood that whatever happened next was going to determine whether they survived this or if the packs tore them apart.

Ash finally turned to look at her.

"Whatever happens next, you're not alone anymore," he said.

Then he opened the truck door.

And the hostile stares became absolutely focused on Aurora.
