Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Woman by the Well

That afternoon, Rupa and Sajib went to the old well near the fields—the place elders avoided. People said a woman once disappeared there during a full moon.

As they approached, the air grew still.

Rupa felt a pressure in her ears, like water closing in.

Near the well stood a woman in a pale sari, her back turned.

"Hello?" Sajib called carefully.

Rupa felt the diary grow heavy in her bag.

The woman spoke, her voice dry and hollow.

"Have you come to return a name?"

A name began to write itself.

Rupa slammed the diary shut.

"No," she said. "You don't get a name."

The woman screamed—a sound like wind tearing cloth.

The water in the well churned violently.

Sajib grabbed Rupa's hand. "Go—now!"

They ran as the scream followed them, fading only when they reached the road.

When Rupa dared to open the diary again, a new message waited:

In the distance, clouds covered the sun.

The next full moon was coming
