Chapter 30 - Kids Will Be Kids

Raven slowly sat up from the stone slab, her joints still aching. Her gaze drifted to Miranda, standing nearby with folded hands and a worried expression. "Thank you for healing me. I feel a lot better," she said quietly.

Miranda exhaled. "Child, I wish there was more I could do to heal you," she said, stepping closer. "And more I could do to keep you safe from the obligations you've inherited." Her voice softened further. "Vault Zero possesses powerful healing magic, but going forward… you will likely suffer many injuries—not just to your body, but to your mind and soul as well. I'm sorry for the things you'll be forced to endure Raven."

Raven gave a short laugh and rolled her shoulders. "This a small price to pay," she said, her voice firm but tired. "For the friends and family I have now. For Claire. For Harry. For the other kids at the orphanage." She looked at the faint, glowing walls, "For finally having a sense of belonging and a place that feels like a home." Her smile was faint but real. "I'm willing to take on some suffering if that is the cost."

Miranda looked down, as if ashamed. "You must have lived a very hard life in your previous world, Raven. I truly am sorry your own father treated you that way."

Raven gave a quiet chuckle. "I don't think that will be a problem forever. Once I fully master this world's magic system… and integrate it with my own power… I'll probably be able to return home someday." Her expression darkened just slightly. "And give my real father a piece of my mind. Enhanced by this world's magic. And whatever remnants of his own power that are here."

Miranda gave a low whistle. "I would hate to be your father in the future."

"I'm sure he's going to hate being himself," Raven said with a slow, cold smile.

From the side, Bubbles stepped forward and looked at her with bright, expectant eyes. "Raven, are you ready to return to the orphanage?"

Raven nodded and stretched. "Yes."

Miranda raised a finger before Bubbles could start the spell. "Before you go, one more thing. Normally, minors who use magic without Ministry approval are detected. The Ministry has systems in place to monitor unlicensed magical activity." She gestured to the Ring of the Cross on Raven's finger. "That ring exempts you from that. They won't notice your magic at all. Use it freely. If anyone ever questions you, just play dumb. Or play along. Your choice."

Raven blinked and tilted her head. "Oh. Now you tell me. But thanks for the warning."

Miranda nodded. "Also…" She glanced toward the far edge of the vault, where a faint green glow pulsed gently in the shadows. "Pick up that Dementor at some point. Figure out what you want to do with it. I don't want it wandering around here forever."

Raven gave a small nod. "I'll keep that in mind."

Bubbles stepped closer, took Raven's hand, and said brightly, "Let's get you back to the orphanage before morning."

Raven let out a long sigh. "I really need to catch up on my sleep."

A pulse of teleportation magic lit up the room—and they vanished from Vault Zero

They reappeared in Raven's bedroom at the Applewood Home for Wayward Children. The lights were off, but the faint glow of dawn was just beginning to filter through the window. Bubbles gave her a careful look. "Are you sure you are going to be okay?"

Raven managed a soft smile. "I'll be fine. I'm just a little pale right now." She paused. "I'll see you later, Bubbles."

Bubbles nodded. "Call me if you need anything." Then she disappeared with a flash of light.

Raven went straight to the bathroom, changed into her pajamas, brushed her teeth, and slid under the covers. Sleep claimed her in seconds.

About six hours later, a knock came at the door. Claire's voice followed, gentle and firm. "Raven, it's time for breakfast. You need to get ready so we can do your school lessons."

Raven groaned into her pillow. "Learning is no fun, Claire."

Claire pushed open the door and leaned in with a warm laugh. "Doesn't matter. You still need to be properly educated. We even have a math test today."

Raven groaned louder and threw her pillow at her. Claire caught it mid-air, amused, and placed it back on the bed. "You're still not getting out of that math test."

"No…" Raven moaned dramatically, dragging herself upright before heading off to shower.

Ten minutes later, she was clean, dressed in a light sundress, and sitting at the breakfast table. Harry glanced up from his bowl. "What did you do last night, Raven? You look kind of pale."

Raven shrugged. "I got a little cold during the night. I'm feeling better now."

Harry slid a bowl of cereal towards her. "Here. Eat something. It will help your complexion."

She gave him a soft smile and started eating, pouring herself a glass of milk.

Claire came around with a pot of tea and looked at her closely. "Raven, are you feeling okay, dear? You look a little pale."

"I just didn't sleep very well," Raven replied, not meeting her eyes.

"All right," Claire said gently. "Just make sure you get plenty of rest."

Harry suddenly looked up. "Raven… what happened to that snake I found in the garden the other day?"

Raven gave a casual shrug. "Oh, it disappeared after we brought it inside."

Harry frowned. "It's back. I saw it earlier."

Claire looked between them. "I don't mind if you keep a snake around. Just make sure you clean up after it. Pets can cause problems sometimes."

Raven nodded. "Don't worry, Claire. We'll keep an eye on it. It won't cause any messes."

Claire smiled, unconcerned. "I'm not worried. You're not the only ones who keep pets around here."

"Okay, Miss Claire," Harry said.

Raven leaned toward him slightly. "Why don't we go find that snake?"

Harry grinned. "Excellent. I left it on the porch."

Raven exhaled quietly as she stood. "There's something weird about that snake."
