Chapter 5 - Chapter 10 – The Hunters’ Organization Revealed

The first gunshot cracked through the forest like lightning.

A tree trunk exploded inches from Liam's head, sending splinters flying through the air.

"MOVE!" Aria shouted.

Liam didn't need to be told twice.

He dove behind a thick fallen log as another shot rang out. Snow burst into the air beside him.

The forest that had felt silent and ancient only moments before was now alive with chaos—shouting voices, rushing footsteps, and the mechanical whir of unfamiliar weapons.

Aria crouched beside him, her blue eye glowing faintly.

"They're closer than I thought," she said.

Liam peeked over the log.

Through the trees he could see them now.

At least a dozen figures moving between the trunks, dressed in long black coats that blended with the night. Some carried rifles. Others held strange metallic devices similar to the tranquilizer gun they had seen earlier.

And behind them—

Vehicles.

Dark armored trucks parked between the trees with their headlights blazing through the snow.

Liam exhaled slowly.

"Okay," he whispered. "That's a lot more than the three guys from earlier."

Aria's jaw tightened.

"They sent a retrieval team."

Liam frowned.

"Retrieval?"

"For me."

A deep rumble shook the forest.

The Keeper stepped forward from the darkness behind them, his massive stone body towering above the trees.

Several hunters immediately noticed him.

"CONTACT!" one of them shouted.

Bright beams of light snapped toward the giant creature.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then one of the hunters raised a device that looked like a bulky rifle with a glowing blue coil along its side.

"Target acquired," he said calmly.

Aria's eyes widened.

"Liam—down!"

The rifle fired.

A beam of blue energy slammed into the Keeper's chest.

The explosion of light shook the entire forest.

The Keeper staggered slightly.

But he did not fall.

Instead, he slowly turned his glowing eyes toward the hunters.

"…Foolish," the ancient creature rumbled.

With a single swing of his enormous arm, he slammed the ground.

The earth erupted.

A shockwave blasted through the clearing, throwing several hunters off their feet.

Liam stared in disbelief.

"Okay," he said quietly. "That was awesome."

But Aria wasn't smiling.

"They're not going to stop."

The hunters regrouped quickly.

Their leader stepped forward from the line.

Liam recognized him instantly.

The same man from the alley.

Tall.

Calm.

Cold eyes.

The man brushed snow off his coat and looked directly at Aria.

"Miss Vale."

Aria's expression hardened.

"Director Hale."

Liam glanced at her.

"You know this guy?"

Aria's voice dropped to a whisper.

"He runs the organization hunting me."

Director Hale smiled faintly.

"I'm flattered you remember."

The Keeper's massive shadow stretched across the forest as he stood protectively behind Liam and Aria.

Hale looked up at the giant creature with mild curiosity.

"So the stories were true," he said. "The Keeper still lives."

The giant's voice rolled like distant thunder.

"…Leave this forest."

Hale ignored the warning.

Instead, he slowly removed his gloves and tucked them neatly into his coat pocket.

"You've caused quite a bit of trouble, Miss Vale."

Aria crossed her arms.

"You've been chasing me for three years."

"Yes."

"And you still haven't caught me."

Hale smiled again.

"Tonight feels promising."

Liam stepped forward slightly.

"Okay," he said. "Before anyone tries to kill anyone else, maybe we can talk about this like normal people."

Aria muttered under her breath.

"They're not normal people."

Hale's gaze shifted to Liam.

"Ah yes," he said. "The photographer."

Liam blinked.

"You know who I am?"

"We know quite a lot about you, Mr. Carter."

Something about the way he said that made Liam's stomach twist.

Hale took a few slow steps closer.

"Son of Dr. Elena Carter."

Liam froze.

Aria looked at him sharply.

Hale continued calmly.

"One of the most brilliant Veil researchers we ever employed."

Liam clenched his fists.

"You killed her."

Hale tilted his head slightly.

"That's an unfortunate misunderstanding."

"You broke into our house!"

"She violated classified protocols," Hale replied smoothly. "Stealing research, experimental stabilizers, and confidential data."

"You murdered her!"

The hunters around Hale remained perfectly still.

Waiting.

Watching.

Hale sighed.

"Your mother was brilliant, Mr. Carter."

"But brilliance often leads to dangerous curiosity."

Liam felt the anger rising in his chest.

"She was trying to stop you."

Hale's eyes darkened slightly.

"Stop progress."

Aria stepped forward.

"You mean stop weaponizing the Veil."

For the first time, Hale's smile disappeared.

The wind blew softly through the trees as snow continued to fall around them.

"Very well," Hale said.

"If we're going to have this conversation…"

He gestured toward the forest behind him.

"…you might as well understand the truth."

Aria's glowing eye narrowed.

"The truth?"

Hale spread his arms slightly.

"Our organization has existed for centuries."

Liam frowned.

"Doing what?"

"Protecting humanity."

Aria laughed bitterly.

"That's not what you do."

Hale ignored her.

"Long before your modern governments existed, long before your cities and machines…"

He pointed toward Aria's glowing eye.

"…people like her were born."

"The Veilborn."

Liam listened carefully.

"They possessed abilities beyond human understanding."

"Teleportation."

"Mind contact."

"Reality manipulation."

Aria crossed her arms.

"You hunted them."

"We contained them."

"By killing them?"

Hale's voice remained calm.

"By preventing catastrophe."

The Keeper's massive voice interrupted.

"…Lies."

The giant stepped forward, the ground shaking beneath his feet.

"…Your kind did not protect the Veil."

"…You exploited it."

Hale finally looked slightly annoyed.

"Yes," he admitted. "We learned from it."

Aria stared at him.

"You experimented on Veilborn."

"For the greater good."

Liam shook his head.

"That's the worst excuse in history."

Hale continued as if Liam hadn't spoken.

"Your mother believed the Veil was a natural phenomenon."

"But she was wrong."

Aria frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Hale's gaze shifted to her pendant.

"The Veil is not natural."

Liam felt a chill run through him.

"…Then what is it?"

Hale looked toward the dark sky above the forest.

"It is a fracture."

Silence spread between them.

"A fracture in reality itself."

Aria's blue eye flickered.

"That's impossible."

"Is it?"

Hale gestured toward the Keeper.

"A creature that has existed for thousands of years."

He pointed at Aria.

"A girl who can teleport across the world."

Then he pointed at Liam.

"A human who can survive direct Veil contact."

He smiled again.

"Does any of that seem natural?"

No one answered.

Hale continued.

"Thousands of years ago, something tore a hole between worlds."

The wind picked up around them.

"The Veil is the thin barrier left behind."

Aria whispered,

"And Veilborn?"

"Are people who can touch the other side."

Liam's stomach dropped.

"The Echoes…"

Hale nodded.

"Humans who touched it too deeply."

"And became something else."

The Keeper growled lowly.

"…And your organization seeks to break the Veil entirely."

Hale didn't deny it.

"We seek to control it."

Aria stepped forward.

"You want to open the fracture."

"Of course."

"Why?!"

Hale's eyes gleamed.

"Because on the other side of the Veil…"

He paused.

"…is power beyond imagination."

The forest fell silent again.

Liam spoke quietly.

"And Aria?"

Hale pointed directly at her.

"She is the key."

Aria's hand instinctively moved to the pendant.

"The Source."

Hale nodded.

"The first Veilborn."

"The only one capable of opening the fracture completely."

Liam shook his head.

"You're insane."

Hale's voice turned colder.

"No, Mr. Carter."

"I am inevitable."

He raised one hand.

The hunters behind him lifted their weapons in perfect synchronization.

Blue energy coils hummed.

Rifles locked onto targets.

Aria.

Liam.

The Keeper.

Hale gave the final order.

"Take the girl."

The forest exploded with gunfire.

Energy blasts streaked through the snow-filled air.

The Keeper roared and slammed the ground again, sending another shockwave through the battlefield.

Aria grabbed Liam's hand.

"Run!"

But Liam didn't move.

Something inside him felt different now.

The necklace beneath his shirt was glowing.

Warm.

Alive.

He looked down.

The small crystal pulsed with the same blue light as Aria's eye.

The Veil was reacting.

Aria noticed.

Her eyes widened.

"Liam…"

The ground trembled again.

But this time…

It wasn't the Keeper.

Something else was happening.

The air itself began to ripple.

Director Hale watched with fascination.

"Well," he said softly.

"Now this is interesting."

Liam looked up.

Blue light spread across the forest floor like lightning crawling through the snow.

Aria whispered in disbelief.

"The Veil…"

The sky above the forest flickered.

Reality itself seemed to bend.

And for the first time—

Liam could feel it.

The other side.

Watching.
