Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The First Hunt

The underground chamber fell silent. Three armored hunters stood at the tunnel entrance, their flashlights slicing through the darkness while dust drifted slowly through the air. The faint smell of burnt metal lingered where the strange artifact had dissolved moments earlier. Kai Ren stood alone in the center of the chamber, unmoving, watching them.

His senses felt different now. Sharper. Clearer. Every small sound in the chamber echoed inside his mind with unnatural clarity. He could hear the faint hum of their scanners, the soft clicking of their armor joints as they shifted, and the steady rhythm of their breathing. His body reacted instinctively, muscles slightly tensed without conscious thought.

The Mutant Bloodhound gene was already working.

The hunters studied him cautiously. Their scanners flickered faintly as they tried to identify the strange signal that had drawn them underground. Moments earlier, their equipment had detected a powerful genetic surge. Now it was gone.

One of the hunters lowered his rifle slightly and stepped forward. The armor he wore carried the insignia of Helix Corporation, one of the most powerful gene research companies in Mega City Helios. The corporations controlled advanced genetic technology and protected their discoveries with ruthless efficiency.

And they eliminated unknown variables.

The man's voice echoed inside the chamber. "Kid… this area is under corporate investigation."

Kai did not respond. His attention remained focused on the system interface floating silently in front of his vision.

Mission: First Hunt. Objective: Survive hostile encounter. Bonus Objective: Devour enemy gene fragments. Reward: Evolution Points.

Kai's eyes slowly moved across the three hunters. Their armor was reinforced combat gear designed for Rift operations. Their rifles were military-grade weapons capable of tearing through mutant hide. Their stance revealed professional training. These were not ordinary patrol soldiers.

Normally, Kai would never consider fighting them. In the slums, people like him survived by avoiding confrontation with corporate forces. But something inside him had changed.

His instincts were no longer telling him to run.

They were telling him to hunt.

The first hunter took another step forward. "Hands where we can see them."

Kai remained still.

The hunter's patience vanished quickly. "Search him."

The second hunter moved forward immediately, weapon raised and scanning. Kai could smell the faint metallic scent of the man's armor and the chemical residue of gun oil. His hearing captured the shift of weight in the soldier's boots as he approached.

Everything suddenly felt slow.

Clear.

The moment the hunter reached out toward him, Kai moved.

His body exploded forward with sudden speed. He twisted sideways and drove his shoulder directly into the hunter's chest. The impact slammed the armored soldier backward into the stone wall with a heavy crash.

Before the other two hunters could react, Kai grabbed the fallen man's rifle and ripped it from his hands.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

The third hunter fired without hesitation. Bullets tore through the air, smashing against the stone floor where Kai had stood moments earlier. But Kai's body had already moved again.

His enhanced reaction speed guided him instinctively.

He rolled behind a broken pillar as sparks and fragments of stone exploded across the chamber walls. The gunfire echoed violently through the narrow underground tunnel.

The hunters shouted to each other. "Hostile target!" "Take him down!"

Kai crouched low behind the stone pillar, breathing steadily. His mind raced. His body felt faster than ever before, but bullets were still deadly.

He glanced briefly at the system interface.

His stats were still low compared to trained gene soldiers.

But the system had given him something they did not expect.

Predator instinct.

Kai inhaled slowly.

The scents inside the chamber flooded his senses again. Gun oil. Metal. Sweat. Dust.

And something else.

Fear.

The hunters were trained professionals, but they had not expected resistance from a scavenger.

Kai moved again.

He dashed along the wall, keeping low as another burst of gunfire tore through the air. Stone fragments exploded near his feet, but his body reacted instinctively, twisting away before the bullets could strike.

The Bloodhound gene sharpened every reflex.

The moment one hunter paused to reload, Kai attacked.

He lunged forward and slammed the rifle butt into the soldier's helmet. The impact knocked the man sideways, sending his weapon clattering across the floor.

The third hunter turned instantly and fired again.

Kai twisted aside as the bullet grazed his shoulder, tearing through his jacket and slicing across his skin. Pain flared through his arm, but it did not slow him down.

He grabbed the injured hunter and shoved him forward as a shield.

The final soldier hesitated for a fraction of a second.

That hesitation was enough.

Kai kicked the rifle out of the man's hands and drove his elbow into the hunter's throat. The soldier collapsed to his knees, choking as he struggled for air.

The chamber fell silent again.

Dust slowly settled across the cracked stone floor.

Kai stood still for several seconds, breathing heavily as adrenaline faded from his body. His shoulder burned where the bullet had grazed him, but the wound was shallow.

Then the system reacted.

Enemy Defeated. Gene Energy Detected. Devour Evolution Available.

Kai stared at the interface.

Devour.

The new function unlocked after integrating the mysterious artifact.

The system continued.

Helix Soldier Gene Fragments Detected. Devour?

Kai hesitated only briefly before nodding slightly. "Devour."

The system activated immediately.

A faint blue glow surrounded the bodies of the fallen hunters. Streams of energy flowed outward from their genetic implants and were absorbed directly into Kai's body.

The power rushed through his veins like electricity.

His muscles tightened as warmth spread through his limbs.

Moments later, the system updated.

Evolution Points Gained: 4. Mutant Bloodhound Gene Strengthened. Reaction Speed +5%. Endurance +3.

Kai exhaled slowly.

The sensation was strange but not painful. The absorbed energy felt natural, as if his body had simply reclaimed unused strength.

The system flickered again.

Alert. Multiple Gene Signatures Approaching. Threat Level: High.

Kai's head turned toward the tunnel entrance instantly.

His enhanced hearing picked up the sound.

Heavy footsteps.

Several sets of them.

More hunters.

The earlier gunfire had alerted the rest of the corporate squad searching the ruins above.

Kai looked briefly at the three unconscious soldiers lying across the chamber floor.

Then he looked toward the deeper tunnel behind him.

His mind calculated quickly.

Fighting three soldiers had been difficult.

Fighting an entire corporate squad would be suicide.

Not yet.

Kai grabbed one of the hunters' rifles and quickly checked the ammunition.

Loaded.

He slung the weapon across his shoulder and moved toward the deeper tunnel leading away from the chamber.

Before leaving, he glanced again at the system interface.

Host: Kai Ren. Rank: Gene Initiate Lv.1. Strength: 14. Speed: 13. Endurance: 17. Neural Reaction: 15. Genes: Mutant Bloodhound Gene (Rare). Abilities: Predator Instinct, Enhanced Smell, Reaction Speed Boost. Evolution Points: 4.

Kai could already feel the difference in his body.

His muscles were stronger.

His reactions faster.

And this was only the beginning.

The tunnel stretched deep beneath the ruins, disappearing into darkness.

Above ground, the corporate hunters were spreading through the Rift Zone, searching for the missing signal.

They did not know the artifact had already chosen a host.

They did not know the system now belonged to someone else.

And they definitely did not know that the scavenger they had cornered moments earlier had just become something far more dangerous.

Kai stepped deeper into the underground passage.

His footsteps were silent.

His senses alert.

For the first time since entering the Rift Zone years ago, the ruins did not feel like a graveyard.

They felt like a hunting ground.

And somewhere in the city above, both monsters and corporations were about to discover something new.

A predator that was still evolving.

Kai Ren disappeared into the darkness of the tunnel as the sound of approaching corporate soldiers echoed faintly behind him.

His evolution had only just begun.

But the hunt had already started.
