Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Beneath the Sanctuary

The tremor didn't stop.

It rolled through the archive like distant thunder, rattling shelves and sending dust drifting from the ceiling.

The Chronicle's pages continued turning on their own.

Faster now.

Almost frantic.

The older woman stared at the book in disbelief.

"No..."

Another tremor hit.

Stronger.

The shelves groaned.

Somewhere deep within the mountain, a low metallic sound echoed through the stone.

Ancient.

Massive.

Awakening.

Kai looked around nervously.

"I would like to officially leave the haunted library."

Nobody listened.

Adrian's attention remained fixed on the Chronicle.

The mark on his wrist burned.

Not painfully.

Urgently.

Like it was responding to something below them.

Something calling back.

Veyr stepped toward the woman.

"What is happening?"

She didn't answer immediately.

For the first time since they had met, she looked genuinely uncertain.

"The lower seals..."

Her voice trailed off.

Then her eyes widened.

"No."

Adrian frowned.

"The lower seals what?"

The woman looked directly at him.

"They're opening."

Silence.

Kai groaned.

"Why is everything opening lately?"

Nobody had an answer.

A distant alarm suddenly echoed through the Sanctuary.

A deep, resonant tone.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound carried throughout the mountain.

Warning.

Emergency.

Fear.

The woman turned sharply toward the exit.

"We have to move."

That got everyone's attention.

Adrian glanced at the Chronicle.

"What about the book?"

The pages stopped turning.

For a brief moment, everything became still.

Then the book snapped shut on its own.

The sound echoed like a final decision.

The mark on Adrian's wrist cooled immediately.

The connection faded.

Waiting.

Watching.

The woman stared at the closed Chronicle.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

Then she turned away.

"Leave it."

That answer bothered Adrian.

But another tremor shook the archive before he could argue.

This one nearly knocked Kai off balance.

"Yep," Kai said quickly. "We're leaving."

No one disagreed.

---

The corridors outside were no longer quiet.

Sanctuary members moved rapidly through the halls.

Groups of silver-robed observers hurried toward different sections of the mountain.

The calm atmosphere that had defined the Sanctuary was gone.

Replaced by urgency.

And concern.

A lot of concern.

Adrian noticed something else.

The people weren't looking at the tremors.

They were looking at him.

Whispers followed them through every corridor.

Not hostile.

Not welcoming.

Uneasy.

As though his arrival had confirmed a fear they already had.

Kai noticed too.

"I don't like that."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"The staring?"

"The terrified staring."

Fair.

The woman led them through several winding passageways before finally arriving at a large circular chamber.

Unlike the archive, this room was crowded.

Dozens of Sanctuary members had gathered here.

At the center stood a massive stone platform covered in glowing symbols.

Maps floated above it.

Not paper maps.

Projections.

Silver images showing different regions of the world.

Mountains.

Cities.

Ancient ruins.

Every projection flickered.

Unstable.

The moment they entered, the room fell silent.

Every eye turned toward Adrian.

The woman stepped forward.

"He opened the Chronicle."

The reaction was immediate.

Shock.

Fear.

Disbelief.

One older man actually took a step backward.

Adrian was starting to get tired of being the most alarming thing in every room.

A tall woman near the platform spoke first.

"Is it true?"

The older woman nodded.

"Yes."

Another silence followed.

Then the tall woman asked the question everyone seemed afraid to ask.

"Which name appeared?"

The answer came quietly.

But it echoed through the entire chamber.

"Auren."

Several people visibly paled.

One nearly dropped the tablet he was holding.

Kai slowly looked around.

"...Okay."

A pause.

"Who exactly was this guy?"

No one answered.

Again.

Kai sighed dramatically.

"I'm starting to take this personally."

Before anyone could respond, the central platform flashed.

Bright.

A projection expanded above it.

The room froze.

Adrian stared.

The image showed a vast underground structure.

Circular.

Enormous.

Hidden beneath the Sanctuary itself.

Layer after layer of stone rings descended into darkness.

And at the very center—

Something glowed.

Silver-black light.

The same color as the mark.

The same color as the bond.

The same color as the Threshold.

Adrian's pulse quickened.

The room became completely silent.

The tall woman whispered one word.

"...Impossible."

Adrian pointed at the projection.

"What is that?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Veyr spoke.

His voice unusually tense.

"...The Origin."

Silence.

Every piece suddenly clicked into place.

Auren's warning.

The Chronicle.

The hidden records.

The fear.

The secrecy.

The bond was a key.

A key to the Origin.

Adrian stared at the projection.

At the glowing structure buried beneath the mountain.

The thing that apparently should not be waking.

"The Origin is under the Sanctuary?"

The older woman nodded slowly.

"Always has been."

Kai blinked.

"...You built your entire civilization on top of the world's biggest secret?"

"Yes."

"That seems irresponsible."

No one disagreed.

Another tremor hit.

The projection flickered violently.

Then changed.

Everyone froze.

Because there was now a figure standing beside the Origin.

A silhouette.

Tall.

Motionless.

Watching.

The image quality distorted.

The figure was impossible to identify.

But Adrian felt a chill run down his spine.

Recognition.

The mark pulsed once.

Hard.

The silhouette slowly lifted its head.

And looked directly into the projection.

Directly at him.

The connection lasted less than a second.

Then the image shattered.

Gone.

The room erupted into alarmed voices.

People rushed toward the platform.

Several projections failed completely.

The older woman looked horrified.

"What just happened?"

No one answered.

Because no one knew.

Adrian stared at the empty air where the figure had been.

His heart was pounding.

Not from fear.

From certainty.

He knew that presence.

Not the Keeper.

Not Auren.

Something else.

Something older.

Something waiting.

Then the mark pulsed again.

And a single thought entered his mind.

Clear.

Cold.

Unmistakable.

It knows where you are.

Adrian's expression hardened.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Because for the first time since arriving—

He understood the truth.

The Sanctuary hadn't called him here for answers.

It had called him here because the Origin was waking.

And somehow—

He was connected to it.

The room buzzed with panic.

But Adrian's focus remained fixed on the image that was no longer there.

The figure.

The gaze.

The certainty.

Whatever was beneath the Sanctuary—

It was no longer asleep.

And it was waiting for him.
