Chapter 69 - Chapter 69: The Descent

The room erupted into motion.

Sanctuary members rushed between stations. Projections flashed. Orders were shouted across the chamber.

For the first time since arriving, Adrian saw fear.

Not concern.

Not caution.

Fear.

The Origin was waking.

And nobody knew what would happen next.

Adrian stood at the edge of the central platform, staring at the image of the underground structure beneath the Sanctuary.

The place felt familiar.

That was what bothered him.

He had never seen it before.

Yet some part of him recognized it.

The mark pulsed again.

Slow.

Heavy.

Like a second heartbeat.

The older woman noticed immediately.

"...It's responding."

Adrian looked at her.

"It keeps doing that."

"No."

Her expression tightened.

"Not like this."

Silence.

Veyr stepped closer to the projection.

"The tremors are increasing."

Another rumble rolled through the mountain.

As if proving his point.

The chamber shook.

Several projections flickered.

A few vanished entirely.

Kai stumbled slightly.

"Okay, that's getting old."

Nobody laughed.

Because beneath the Sanctuary—

Something was moving.

The tall woman operating the central platform suddenly stiffened.

"Movement detected."

Every head turned.

The projection changed.

The rings surrounding the Origin illuminated one by one.

Ancient pathways.

Forgotten chambers.

Buried structures.

All awakening.

And then—

A section of the map turned red.

Silence fell instantly.

The older woman stared.

"No..."

Adrian frowned.

"What is it?"

The answer came quietly.

"The Seventh Seal."

The room became even quieter.

Kai folded his arms.

"Why do all your names sound ominous?"

No one answered.

Again.

The older woman pointed toward the projection.

"The Seventh Seal protects the chamber containing the Origin."

Adrian looked at the glowing section.

"It's failing."

"Yes."

That was bad.

Very bad.

He didn't know exactly why.

But everyone's reaction made it obvious.

The Sanctuary had expected the Origin to remain dormant.

Forever.

That plan was no longer working.

A young observer rushed into the chamber.

Breathing hard.

Panic visible on his face.

"Elder!"

The older woman turned.

"What happened?"

"The lower levels reported movement."

The room froze.

"What kind of movement?"

The observer swallowed.

Then answered.

"Something crossed the inner boundary."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kai immediately looked around.

"...Please tell me that isn't normal."

"It isn't."

The answer came from Veyr.

And somehow that made it worse.

Adrian stepped forward.

"What crossed it?"

The observer shook his head.

"We don't know."

A pause.

"The sentries disappeared before they could identify it."

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

Something was already inside.

---

Minutes later, they were moving.

Fast.

The older woman led them through restricted sections of the Sanctuary.

Ancient halls.

Hidden corridors.

Places clearly meant to remain unseen.

The deeper they descended, the older everything became.

Modern stone gave way to ancient architecture.

Silver markings faded.

The walls darkened.

History itself seemed buried down here.

Kai glanced around nervously.

"I hate underground places."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You hate most places."

"True."

Another tremor shook the passage.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

The mark pulsed.

Stronger.

Adrian felt it immediately.

The connection.

Not to the Threshold.

Not to the Keeper.

To something below.

Calling.

Waiting.

Recognizing.

His pace slowed slightly.

Veyr noticed.

"What is it?"

Adrian looked ahead.

"...We're getting close."

The older woman turned sharply.

"How do you know?"

The mark burned.

A vision flashed.

A circular chamber.

Silver-black light.

Massive stone rings.

And a door.

An enormous door.

The image vanished.

Adrian exhaled.

"I've seen it."

Silence followed.

No one asked how.

Because everyone already knew.

The bond.

The Chronicle.

Auren.

Everything was connected now.

The corridor opened into a vast cavern.

Everyone stopped.

The sight was breathtaking.

Ancient bridges stretched across a chasm so deep the bottom couldn't be seen.

Huge stone rings floated in the darkness below.

Not suspended by chains.

Not attached to anything.

Simply floating.

Defying logic.

Defying gravity.

At the center of it all—

A pillar of silver-black light rose from the depths.

The Origin.

Adrian knew immediately.

The mark flared.

The pillar answered.

A pulse of energy surged upward through the cavern.

The entire structure reacted.

Lights ignited.

Symbols awakened.

Ancient mechanisms began moving for the first time in centuries.

The Sanctuary members froze.

The older woman stared at Adrian.

Horror creeping into her expression.

"...It recognizes you."

Adrian didn't answer.

Because something else had caught his attention.

Movement.

Across one of the distant bridges.

A silhouette.

Standing completely still.

Watching them.

His pulse quickened.

The same figure from the projection.

The same impossible presence.

Tall.

Motionless.

Waiting.

Kai followed his gaze.

"...Am I the only one seeing that?"

"No," Veyr said quietly.

The silhouette took a single step forward.

The cavern trembled.

Not violently.

But deliberately.

Like a response.

The mark on Adrian's wrist burned.

Hard.

The figure stopped.

And then—

It smiled.

Not visibly.

Not physically.

Yet Adrian somehow knew.

The sensation sent a chill through him.

Recognition.

The figure knew him.

The realization landed heavily.

Not because it was surprising.

Because it felt inevitable.

The older woman whispered something.

A name.

So quiet Adrian almost missed it.

Almost.

"...The Warden."

Silence.

The figure remained motionless.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the pillar of light behind it pulsed once.

Brilliant.

Blinding.

The cavern shook violently.

Cracks spread across the nearest bridge.

Ancient stone groaned.

The Seventh Seal was breaking.

Everyone felt it.

Everyone knew it.

And for the first time—

The figure finally spoke.

Its voice echoed across the cavern.

Ancient.

Calm.

Unavoidable.

"At last."

The mark erupted with light.

Adrian's breath caught.

Because the voice—

He recognized it.

Not from the Sanctuary.

Not from the Chronicle.

Not from the Threshold.

From somewhere deeper.

Somewhere older.

And suddenly—

He understood one terrifying truth.

The Warden hadn't been waiting for the Origin to wake.

The Warden had been waiting for him.
