Smoke on the Horizon
Morning arrived beneath a sky painted with pale gold.
The expedition packed their camp with practiced efficiency.
Tents disappeared into wagons.
Cooking fires were carefully extinguished.
Not a single piece of refuse remained behind.
The old orchard looked as though no one had camped there at all.
Dorion looked back one last time.
"Leave every place better than we found it."
It had quietly become the expedition's unspoken habit.
Bardin played a lively melody as the crawlers rolled onto the Founder's Road once more.
Ahead...
the thin column of smoke the Veilkeeper scouts had discovered the night before still climbed into the sky.
Someone lived beyond those hills.
The question was...
Who?
The Forgotten Settlement
By midday, the expedition reached the crest of a low ridge.
Beyond it lay a valley.
Nestled among ancient stone terraces stood a small frontier settlement.
Weathered wooden homes leaned against the ruins of much older bronze buildings.
Ancient relay towers lay collapsed beneath creeping vines.
Broken sections of the Founder's Road disappeared beneath gardens and livestock pens.
A weathered wooden sign hung above the entrance.
Its faded letters read:
ASH HOLLOW
The village was alive.
Smoke drifted from chimneys.
Children carried buckets of water.
Farmers harvested root vegetables from narrow fields.
Blacksmiths worked beneath patched roofs assembled from reclaimed bronze and timber.
Life had endured.
Not comfortably.
But stubbornly.
Unwelcome Guests
The first villagers noticed the expedition almost immediately.
Conversations stopped.
Doors quietly closed.
Workers laid down their tools.
Several men carrying hunting spears gathered near the entrance.
Others climbed onto rooftops with old crossbows.
A bell rang three slow times.
Not an alarm.
A warning.
Dorion immediately raised his hand.
"No weapons."
The expedition halted.
No soldier reached for a sword.
No engineer armed a crawler.
No scout vanished into the trees.
Instead...
they waited.
An elderly man slowly approached.
His beard was silver.
One leg had been replaced by a simple wooden prosthetic carved decades earlier.
His eyes carefully studied every face.
Finally...
he spoke.
"State your purpose."
Dorion stepped forward.
"We are travelers."
"We seek the lost roads and the forgotten cities."
The old man remained silent.
"We carry no intention of conquest."
"We only ask permission to enter."
The elder looked beyond Dorion toward the long line of wagons.
"So did the last people who came."
Silence followed.
Lirion quietly asked,
"What happened?"
The old man's voice hardened.
"Scavengers."
"They stole our battery cells."
"They stripped our machines."
"They burned our granary when we resisted."
No one interrupted him.
The wounds were still fresh.
Even if the scars were years old.
Earning Trust
Dorion removed his sword.
Slowly...
he placed it upon the ground.
Then stepped backward.
One by one...
the expedition followed.
Hunters lowered their bows.
Iron Legion soldiers unfastened their rifles.
Even the Veilkeeper scouts emerged openly from the trees.
The villagers exchanged uncertain glances.
The elder studied Dorion for a long moment.
"You trust strangers?"
Dorion smiled faintly.
"No."
"I trust that someone has to take the first step."
For the first time...
the old man smiled.
A very small smile.
"You may enter."
A Town Built Upon the Past
Ash Hollow was unlike Aurion.
Nothing matched.
Ancient bronze walls supported wooden homes.
Old machine parts had become farming equipment.
Relay conduits carried fresh water instead of energy.
Every building had been repaired dozens of times across generations.
Children played atop the foundations of buildings whose original purpose no one remembered.
Sorion walked quietly through the streets.
The entire village felt...
familiar.
As though another city still slept beneath it.
A Dying Heart
Near the center of the settlement stood a squat stone building protected by iron bars.
Inside...
Lirion immediately stopped.
A Battery Core.
Old.
Massive.
Its bronze casing bore the emblem of ancient Orinthal.
But its glow was weak.
Almost gone.
Cracks spread across its crystalline chamber.
Each pulse grew dimmer than the last.
A young village mechanic sighed.
"We've repaired it every way we know."
"It keeps the pumps running."
"The grain mills."
"The lights."
"If it dies..."
"So does Ash Hollow."
Lirion carefully circled the machine.
He didn't touch it.
Not yet.
Instead he smiled.
"Tell me everything you've already tried."
The mechanic blinked.
"You... aren't going to fix it?"
Lirion chuckled.
"Not until I understand it."
The young mechanic grinned.
"You sound like my grandfather."
The Monument
At the edge of the village stood a weathered bronze monument almost completely hidden beneath ivy.
Most villagers ignored it.
To them...
it had always been just another old stone.
Sorion stepped closer.
His fingers brushed away centuries of moss.
Ancient Orinthal symbols emerged beneath the dirt.
The bronze compass began to hum.
Then...
the world vanished.
Memory Resonance
The ruins came alive.
The weathered homes disappeared.
The broken relay tower stood whole once more.
Color returned to the streets.
Hundreds of travelers filled the marketplace.
Merchants exchanged goods.
Children laughed.
Messengers hurried along the Founder's Road.
The monument gleamed beneath the morning sun.
Its inscription became clear.
RELAY COMMUNITY 07
EMBER'S CROSSING
Sorion watched families greet passing caravans.
Travelers rested before continuing toward Borealis.
Blacksmiths repaired crawler axles.
Musicians filled the square with laughter.
The settlement had once been one of the busiest relay communities in western Orinthal.
Then...
the vision fractured.
Smoke.
Screams.
The distant thunder of war.
The memory shattered before he could see more.
Sorion stumbled backward.
Dorion caught his shoulder.
"What happened?"
Sorion looked toward the monument.
"This place..."
"It was never called Ash Hollow."
Everyone turned toward him.
"It was Ember's Crossing."
The elderly village leader frowned.
"My grandfather..."
He stopped speaking.
"My grandfather used to say that name."
"We thought it was only a story."
Strange Sounds
That evening...
while repairs to the Battery Core continued...
an uneasy silence settled over the village.
The livestock became restless.
Dogs barked toward the surrounding hills.
Then...
a deep metallic groan echoed beneath the earth.
Once.
Then again.
The sound resembled enormous gears slowly turning after centuries of silence.
The villagers froze.
One frightened child whispered,
"It's happening again..."
The elder's face turned pale.
"So..."
"They've awakened."
Dorion immediately organized the village guard.
Hunters climbed the walls.
Iron Legion engineers inspected the ancient foundations.
Veilkeeper scouts disappeared into the surrounding darkness.
Lirion reluctantly stepped away from the Battery Core.
Whatever was coming...
could not be ignored.
Ending
Midnight arrived.
The village stood silent.
Then...
DONG...
A single bronze bell rang beneath the earth.
Its sound did not come from the church.
Nor from the village square.
It echoed from somewhere deep below the forgotten ruins.
Another bell answered.
Then another.
Ancient warning bells...
silent for over a thousand years...
began ringing beneath Ash Hollow.
Far below the sleeping village...
hidden maintenance tunnels slowly unlocked.
Rusted bronze doors shuddered open.
Cold blue lights flickered to life.
Something...
was waking beneath Ember's Crossing.
