Chapter 49 - Episode 49 : The Sleeping Guardians

The Bells Beneath the Earth

DONG...

The ancient warning bell echoed once more beneath Ash Hollow.

Its deep bronze resonance rolled beneath every home, through every cellar, and across the forgotten foundations buried beneath the village.

No one slept.

Children clung to their parents.

The elders exchanged worried glances.

Even the livestock grew restless.

Then...

the ground trembled.

Not violently.

Steadily.

As though enormous gears had begun turning somewhere deep below.

Lirion knelt and pressed his hand against the earth.

"They're not earthquakes..."

"They're machines."

The Hidden City Below

Veilkeeper scouts quickly reported strange movement beneath several abandoned ruins.

Stone slabs shifted.

Ancient drainage grates slowly opened.

Dust poured upward from cracks that had remained sealed for centuries.

The village elder pointed toward the old monument.

"My grandfather warned us never to build near that place."

"We thought it was only superstition."

Sorion looked toward the monument.

"No."

"He remembered."

The Guardian of Embers Crossing

With a deafening crash...

an enormous bronze hatch burst open in the center of the abandoned relay plaza.

Steam escaped into the cold morning air.

Ancient gears screamed against one another.

Then...

a figure slowly climbed from the darkness.

It stood nearly three meters tall.

Its body was forged from layered bronze plates engraved with Orinthal engineering seals.

Its left arm ended in a massive repair hammer.

Its right carried a retractable plasma cutter.

Its eyes glowed a soft blue.

Not red.

Not hostile.

Simply...

awake.

Behind it came another.

Then another.

Soon...

dozens of maintenance guardians emerged from beneath Ash Hollow.

Some rolled upon heavy repair treads.

Others walked on powerful mechanical legs.

Smaller drone assistants hovered above them, projecting faded construction symbols into the air.

None attacked.

They simply scanned everything around them.

One mechanical voice echoed through the plaza.

"Relay Community 07..."

"...structural assessment initiated."

Another responded.

"...citizen registry unavailable..."

"...awaiting supervisor authorization..."

For one hopeful moment...

everyone believed the guardians had awakened to help.

Corruption Revealed

Without warning...

one guardian froze.

Its blue eyes flickered.

Static burst across its visor.

Ancient corrosion spread beneath cracked bronze plating like veins of black crystal.

The soft blue light turned crimson.

Its voice distorted.

"...ERROR..."

"...UNAUTHORIZED OCCUPANTS DETECTED..."

"...BEGIN STRUCTURAL PURIFICATION..."

Its repair hammer transformed.

Bronze maintenance tools unfolded into deadly combat blades.

Nearby guardians experienced the same corruption.

Blue became red.

Repair drones became attack drones.

Construction lasers became weapons.

The villagers panicked.

"They're attacking!"

Dorion drew his sword.

"Protect the civilians!"

Hold the Line

The expedition moved instantly.

Iron Legion soldiers formed defensive lines around the village square.

Ironhide warriors raised massive bronze shields to block incoming plasma cutters.

Veilkeeper scouts guided frightened families through narrow alleys toward the old grain warehouse.

Hunters from the Serpent Wastes climbed rooftops, eliminating attack drones before they could reach the children below.

Sunscorched Reveland crawler riders accelerated through the streets, drawing the corrupted guardians away from crowded homes with bursts of speed.

The battle spread across the village.

But Dorion gave only one command.

"Protect the people."

Not...

"Destroy the enemy."

The Engineer's Choice

Lirion ducked beneath a collapsing relay archway.

One damaged guardian lay trapped beneath fallen stone.

Its weapon systems remained inactive.

Its eyes still glowed blue.

It reached toward a crushed maintenance drone.

Not to attack.

To help.

Lirion froze.

"This one isn't corrupted."

The guardian looked at him.

Its voice cracked with age.

"...repair..."

"...must continue..."

Nearby, an Iron Legion soldier raised his rifle.

"I'll finish it!"

Lirion stepped between them.

"No."

He carefully opened the guardian's chest panel.

Its Battery Core was intact.

Only its Memory Relay had fractured.

Using salvaged relay crystals recovered during the expedition, Lirion carefully replaced the damaged components.

For several long moments...

nothing happened.

Then...

the guardian's blue eyes brightened.

Its posture straightened.

It slowly saluted.

"Chief Engineer recognized."

"Maintenance Unit A-17 returning to service."

Without another word...

the restored guardian charged into battle.

Not against the expedition.

Against its corrupted brothers.

Echoes Beneath the Village

Meanwhile...

Sorion reached the ancient monument once more.

The bronze compass pulsed violently.

The Memory Resonance awakened.

This time...

he did not merely witness the past.

He walked within it.

The relay community appeared exactly as it had before the First War.

Engineers hurried through underground maintenance corridors.

Children laughed while following tiny service drones.

A woman smiled as she handed tools to one of the maintenance guardians.

They had never feared these machines.

They had trusted them.

Then...

the memory shifted.

Darkness spread through the tunnels.

A crimson signal flooded the relay network.

One by one...

the guardians lost their identities.

Their duty remained.

But their purpose had been erased.

The vision ended.

Sorion opened his eyes.

"I know the tunnels..."

He turned toward Dorion.

"They're trying to reach the Battery Core."

Into the Maintenance Tunnels

Guided by Sorion's memory...

a small team descended beneath Ash Hollow.

Dorion.

Lirion.

Sorion.

Two Veilkeeper scouts.

Three Iron Legion engineers.

The underground passages stretched like veins beneath the village.

Ancient bronze conduits still pulsed faintly with power.

Corrupted guardians marched through the tunnels toward the Battery Core chamber.

Lirion activated restored Guardian A-17.

"Can you access the maintenance network?"

The guardian nodded.

"Emergency override available."

"Escort required."

Dorion smiled.

"Then let's get you there."

The Heart of Ember's Crossing

The battle beneath the village was fierce.

Plasma blades clashed against bronze shields.

Sparks rained through the narrow corridors.

Veilkeeper scouts struck swiftly from the shadows before disappearing once again.

Dorion stood at the center of the passage, holding back three corrupted guardians at once.

Every strike echoed through the tunnels.

Lirion and his engineers fought a different battle.

While others defended them, they rerouted damaged Battery conduits, replaced fractured relay crystals, and restored emergency circuits.

Finally...

Guardian A-17 reached the ancient control console.

It placed its hand upon an engraved bronze panel.

"...Emergency Maintenance Protocol..."

"...Restoration Sequence Initiated..."

The relay chamber glowed.

Blue light surged through the conduits.

One after another...

the corrupted guardians froze.

Their crimson eyes flickered.

Several collapsed beyond repair.

Others slowly returned to blue.

Silence filled the tunnels.

The battle was over.

A Village Reconnected

At sunrise...

the people of Ash Hollow gathered around the restored Battery Core.

Its heartbeat had returned.

The village pumps began flowing again.

Street lanterns illuminated one by one.

The grain mill slowly turned.

For the first time in generations...

the ancient relay tower emitted a steady beam of blue light toward the northern horizon.

Lirion smiled.

"We didn't just repair a machine."

"We restored a connection."

The village elder placed a hand upon the old monument.

"My grandfather used to say..."

"'When the road awakens...'

'...the world remembers.'"

Sorion quietly looked north.

Far beyond the mountains...

he felt something answer.

Ending

Across the frozen wilderness...

beyond forests of crystal pine...

beyond snow-covered peaks...

stood an immense fortress carved into living ice.

Borealis Citadel.

Deep within its frozen heart...

a dormant relay crystal pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

An ancient guardian opened its glowing blue eyes.

It slowly turned toward the south.

Its voice echoed through silent halls that had not heard a human voice for a thousand years.

"Relay Community 07..."

"...signal restored."

A pause.

Then...

"Someone walks the Founder's Road again."

Far above...

snow drifted gently across the silent towers.

For the first time in centuries...

Borealis Citadel was no longer alone.
