Chapter 27 - this time she chose forever

Chapter 27

The night was quiet.

Unusually quiet.

Jay stood on the balcony.

The city lights stretched far ahead.

Endless.

Powerful.

Just like the life she was living now.

A soft breeze brushed past her.

But her heart…

Wasn't calm.

Not tonight.

Footsteps approached.

She didn't turn.

Because she already knew.

Keifer stood behind her.

Silent.

Watching.

"You're thinking too much."

He said lowly.

A small smile touched her lips.

"You always know."

A pause.

Then—

"I learned."

Silence settled between them.

Comfortable.

Familiar now.

Jay took a slow breath.

Then turned.

Facing him.

Her eyes…

Different tonight.

Not playful.

Not teasing.

Serious.

Certain.

"Keifer…"

He looked at her.

Focused instantly.

"What?"

A small pause.

Her fingers intertwined slightly.

Not from fear.

From anticipation.

"When you first asked me…"

His gaze didn't change.

"You remember what I said?"

A faint silence.

"You refused."

Simple.

Direct.

Jay nodded slowly.

"I was scared."

Another pause.

"I hated you."

Still honest.

Still real.

Keifer didn't react.

Didn't interrupt.

He just listened.

Because now—

Her words mattered.

"I thought you were cruel."

Her voice softened.

"I thought you'd destroy me."

A small breath left her.

"But you didn't."

Silence.

"You protected me."

A step closer.

"You stayed."

Another step.

"You came back when I called."

Now she stood right in front of him.

Close.

Her eyes locked with his.

"And somewhere in between…"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"I stopped being scared."

A pause.

Then softer—

"I started choosing you."

Something shifted in his gaze.

Subtle.

But real.

Jay's fingers slowly reached for his hand.

Holding it.

Firm.

Not hesitant anymore.

Not unsure.

"I don't want this to be forced anymore."

Her heart raced.

But her voice stayed steady.

"I don't want it to be something we had to do."

A breath.

Then—

"I want it to be something I choose."

Silence wrapped around them.

Heavy.

Powerful.

Real.

Jay looked straight into his eyes.

No fear.

No doubt.

Just certainty.

"So…"

A small pause.

Then—

"Will you marry me?"

Everything stopped.

The world.

The noise.

Time itself.

Because those words—

They weren't expected.

Not from her.

Not like this.

Not now.

Keifer didn't answer immediately.

Didn't move.

Just looked at her.

Long.

Carefully.

As if making sure…

This was real.

That she meant it.

That she wasn't going to take it back.

Jay didn't look away.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't break.

She stood there—

Waiting.

Choosing him.

Completely.

And slowly—

Very slowly—

A rare expression crossed his face.

Not control.

Not dominance.

Something softer.

Something… human.

His hand tightened around hers.

"You don't ask me things like that…"

He said quietly.

Her breath hitched slightly.

"Why not?"

A pause.

Then—

"Because I don't say no to you."

Her heart skipped.

And that…

That was his answer.

Jay smiled.

Soft.

Relieved.

Happy.

And for the first time—

There was no fear left in her story.

Only choice.

Only love.

Only him.
