Chapter 52: Red Sky, Bad Decisions
The blood sky did not rain.
It just sat there, thick and wet-looking, like the world had been painted by someone who only owned one color and was deeply committed to the bit.
Willowbrook High's emergency assembly lasted exactly eleven minutes before the principal's voice cracked on the intercom and he declared, "Everyone go home, for the love of God, just go home."
Kevin, Wyatt, Bangu, and Jackson walked out together under the red light. The memorial plaque near the gate was still cracked where the first drop had landed. A janitor was trying to clean it with bleach and failing spectacularly.
"So," Wyatt said, chewing gum like it owed him money, "we're not doing the whole 'pretend this is normal' thing again, right?"
Kevin stared up at the sky. The Matrix under his shirt was humming, low and irritated. "Dracula Bloodnort. Blood Amulet. Blood sky. I'm sensing a theme."
Bangu cracked his knuckles. "I vote we punch the theme until it stops."
Jackson's voice came out dry. "Bold strategy. Has only failed us twice."
They didn't get far.
A black van screeched up to the curb. The side door slid open and Loki leaned out, one eyebrow already raised in permanent judgment.
"Get in. Headquarters. Now. And no, Bangu, you cannot punch the sky from the van."
Ofentse sat in the passenger seat, arms crossed, jaw tight. The moment Loki spoke, Ofentse's eyes flicked to him and stayed there a second too long. Loki noticed. Ofentse looked away first. The air between them was thick enough to spread on toast.
Kevin climbed in. "You two good?"
"We're fine," Ofentse said too quickly.
Loki smiled without showing teeth. "He's been staring at my mouth for three days. I'm choosing to take it as a compliment."
Ofentse's ears went red. "I was not—"
"You were."
Dark comedy settled over the van like a comfortable blanket made of trauma. Bangu snorted. Wyatt grinned. Even Jackson's mouth twitched.
Guardians of Destiny Headquarters – Main Hall
The place still smelled like ozone and old blood, but someone had tried to brighten it up with fairy lights. The fairy lights were losing.
Vera, former Sin of Lust, current reluctant ally, was draped across a conference table like she owned the concept of furniture. She wore a black dress that seemed to be held up by pure spite and two thin straps. Her horns caught the red light from the windows and glowed faintly.
When Nathan Moya walked in, her entire posture changed. The lazy succubus smile sharpened into something hungry and almost shy.
"Illusions boy," she purred. "You're late. I was starting to think you'd died again just to avoid me."
Nathan stopped dead. "Vera. You're… still here."
"On your side now, remember? Good little reformed demon. Mostly. I only tried to seduce three interns this week. Progress."
Ofentse muttered, "She's been trying to sit on Nathan's lap since breakfast."
Loki leaned against the wall beside him, voice low enough that only Ofentse could hear. "Jealous?"
Ofentse shot him a look that could have melted steel. Loki just smiled wider, slow and deliberate. The chemistry between them crackled like a live wire someone had forgotten to unplug.
Cohen cleared his throat. "Focus. Blood sky covers three continents. Dracula Bloodnort is confirmed as the source. Amulet of ancient blood magic. We need eyes on the ground and we need them yesterday."
A new voice cut in from the doorway.
"Then you're lucky I hate the color red."
Everyone turned.
The newcomer was tall, lean, and dressed like he'd robbed a Victorian funeral and then gotten into a fight with a tailor. Pale skin, sharp cheekbones, and a pair of glasses that somehow made him look both intellectual and ready to commit arson. A long black coat hung off his shoulders. In one hand he carried a cane that was definitely a sword.
"Name's Sebastian Crowe," he said, voice dry as old paper. "Former blood-mage. Current professional regret. I used to work with the amulet's previous owner before the little vampire bastard stole it. I can track the residual signatures. For a price."
Peter Shotstock squinted. "What's the price?"
Sebastian smiled without humor. "You let me stay long enough to watch Bloodnort die screaming. Also coffee. Black. No hope in it."
Dark comedy landed again. Bangu whispered to Wyatt, "I like him. He's already depressed. He'll fit right in."
Later – Nathan's Temporary Quarters
The red sky pressed against the windows like it wanted in.
Nathan sat on the edge of the bed, trying to map possible Bloodnort locations with illusion projections. The door opened without a knock.
Vera stepped inside and closed it behind her with a soft click.
"You're avoiding me," she said.
"I'm working."
"You're avoiding me while working. Multitasking." She crossed the room slowly, heels silent on the floor. When she reached him she didn't ask permission. She climbed into his lap, straddling him, dress riding up her thighs. The scent of her skin was smoke and something sweeter, something that made the air feel heavier.
Nathan's hands stayed at his sides. "Vera—"
"I have a crush on you," she said, blunt and darkly amused. "Ridiculous, isn't it? A Sin of Lust catching feelings for the boy who keeps dying and coming back with better cheekbones. I've had kings and monsters and things that don't have names. None of them looked at me like I was still worth saving after everything I've done."
She leaned in, lips brushing his ear.
"I'm done pretending I don't want this."
Nathan's self-control lasted exactly three more seconds.
Then his hands were on her waist, pulling her closer. The kiss was rough, hungry, nothing soft about it. Vera made a low sound of pure satisfaction and rolled her hips against him. The dress came off in one smooth motion. Underneath she wore nothing but heat and intent.
They didn't make it to the bed properly.
Nathan pushed her back against the wall. Vera's legs wrapped around his waist. She was already wet when he pushed into her, tight and burning, a soft broken moan leaving her throat. He fucked her hard, the way the red sky seemed to demand—deep, relentless, no tenderness left in the motion. Vera's nails raked down his back hard enough to draw blood. She laughed against his mouth, dark and breathless.
"Harder, illusion boy. I've waited a year for this."
He gave it to her. The wet sound of skin on skin filled the room. Vera came first, clenching around him with a sharp cry that turned into a breathless laugh. Nathan followed seconds later, burying himself deep and spilling inside her with a low groan.
They stayed like that for a moment, breathing hard, the red light painting stripes across their bodies.
Vera rested her forehead against his.
"I'm still a monster," she whispered, almost gentle. "But I'm your monster now, if you'll have me."
Nathan didn't answer with words. He kissed her again, slower this time, and carried her to the bed for round two.
Elsewhere in Headquarters
Loki and Ofentse stood on the roof, watching the blood sky.
"You're staring again," Loki said.
Ofentse didn't look away this time. "Maybe I like the view."
Loki's smile turned sharper, almost fond. "Careful. I bite."
"I'm counting on it."
The chemistry between them was no longer subtle. It was a loaded gun left on the table.
Below them, the Guardians prepared for war under a sky the color of an open vein. Sebastian Crowe cleaned his glasses with the air of a man who had already accepted that everyone he liked was going to die entertainingly.
And somewhere above the red, Dracula Bloodnort watched it all and smiled, the Blood Amulet pulsing against his chest like a second heart.
The almost-normal day was officially dead.
The real fight was just getting started.
