Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — Lessons in Hosting

Marvin blinked at the floating window hovering in front of him. The text shimmered and blinked as if it had a personality of its own.

> System Tutorial: Guest House Facilities, Guest Stats, Quests.

He groaned. "Facilities, stats, quests… why does this sound like a video game?"

Tentatively, he wandered down a long hallway lined with doors, each humming faintly. The wood smelled old, but not unpleasant. A faint glow leaked from under some doors, and every so often a soft chime echoed as if the building itself were alive.

Marvin approached the first room, where the Star‑Kind Traveler had disappeared moments ago. He peeked inside—and immediately tripped over a floating teacup. The cup wobbled midair before spilling a glittering liquid onto the floor.

"Oops," Marvin muttered, scrambling to mop it up. The liquid twirled and swirled, forming tiny illusionary stars that danced around him before fading.

DING!

> System Notice: Magical Mishap Detected. Guest Satisfaction –1.

Marvin groaned. "I haven't even served dinner yet, and I'm already failing."

Just then, a new guest arrived, stepping through the front doors with a soft shimmer in the air.

The figure was thin, taller than most humans, and cloaked in shadows that whispered with every movement. No face, only a pair of gleaming violet eyes.

"Greetings, Host," the guest said, voice echoing like a distant melody. "I am the Whispering Shadow. I speak in riddles."

Marvin blinked. "Riddles? I'm barely keeping the tea from exploding."

The system floated nearby with a reassuring chime:

> Quest Assigned: Learn the Preferences of Your Guests. Reward: Guest Observation Lens.

Marvin sighed and rubbed his temples. "Alright… guess I have to… figure out what they want?"

He spent the next hour stumbling through small tasks:

Guiding Star‑Kind Traveler to a floating chaise lounge.

Catching Glimmerfin, a water‑elemental guest, before it splashed the hall with glowing water.

Answering the Whispering Shadow's riddles, most of which made no sense to him.

By the time the sun—or something like the sun—crept above the horizon of this edge‑of-reality world, Marvin was exhausted.

> System Update: Guest Observation Lens Unlocked. You can now see guest moods and preferences.

Marvin peeked through the lens, seeing colorful auras floating around each guest. Some shimmered green (happy), some pulsed red (frustrated), and one—he suspected the Shadow—blinked constantly between colors.

"Great," Marvin muttered. "I can now see how much I'm failing."

Still, for the first time since arriving, he smiled. Managing this strange place was going to be… chaotic, yes, but maybe also fun.

Marvin took a deep breath. "Okay… Lesson one in hosting: survive the guests. Lesson two: maybe figure out these riddles before dinner blows up."

And somewhere deep inside the Guest House, a soft, mysterious laugh echoed.

The adventure was only beginning.
