Chapter 14 - CHAPTER FOURTEEN: The Secret beneath his crown

Isabella had always believed that silence was peaceful.

Before Luca, silence meant freedom. It meant waking up in her own apartment, making her own decisions, and living a life where nobody had the power to disrupt her carefully built world.

But now, silence felt different.

Now, silence carried questions.

She sat alone in Luca's penthouse, staring through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below. The lights looked beautiful from above, like thousands of tiny stars scattered across the darkness.

But Isabella knew better now.

Beautiful things could hide dangerous secrets.

And Luca was the perfect example.

She thought about the way his entire personality had changed after that phone call. One second, he had been the man who looked at her like she was the only person in the world. The next, he had become someone colder, someone who carried the weight of an entire empire on his shoulders.

She had seen glimpses of that side before.

The intimidating man everyone feared.

The man whose name alone made people lower their voices.

But this time was different.

This time, she realized the danger wasn't something happening around Luca.

The danger was part of him.

The door opened, pulling her away from her thoughts.

Luca walked back into the room.

But something had changed.

His suit was still perfectly fitted. His expression was still controlled. His presence was still powerful.

Yet Isabella could see the exhaustion behind his eyes.

"You waited," he said softly.

She looked at him.

"I wanted answers."

For a moment, Luca said nothing.

Most people were afraid to question him. Most people accepted whatever explanation he gave them.

But Isabella was different.

She challenged him.

And strangely, that was one of the things he liked most about her.

"You should be afraid of me," Luca said.

The words were quiet, but serious.

Isabella studied his face.

"Should I?"

"Yes."

The honesty surprised her.

Luca walked closer, stopping a few feet away.

"My entire life, people have either wanted something from me or feared me. Nobody stays close because they actually want to know who I am."

"And what if I do?"

His eyes met hers.

"That's the problem."

The answer made her heart tighten.

Because Luca wasn't pushing her away because he didn't care.

He was pushing her away because he cared too much.

Before Isabella could respond, another voice interrupted them.

"Boss."

Both of them turned.

A man stood near the entrance.

Isabella recognized him.

Marco.

She had seen him around Luca several times. He was always quiet, always observing, always appearing whenever Luca needed him.

Marco looked at Isabella briefly before turning his attention back to Luca.

"We have a situation."

Luca's expression hardened.

"What kind?"

Marco hesitated.

"The kind that involves your past."

The room became colder.

Isabella noticed the way Luca reacted.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Luca looked away for a moment.

"Leave us."

Marco nodded and walked out.

Isabella watched Luca carefully.

"What happened?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward the bar, poured himself a drink, but didn't take a sip.

"My past is complicated."

"Everyone says that when they don't want to explain something."

A small smile appeared on Luca's face.

"You really don't know when to stop."

"No."

"And that doesn't scare you?"

Isabella shook her head.

"No."

For some reason, that answer affected him.

He looked at her differently.

"You're either incredibly brave or incredibly reckless."

"Maybe both."

A quiet laugh escaped him.

It was rare.

And Isabella realized she loved seeing moments like that.

Moments where Luca wasn't the feared man everyone talked about.

Moments where he was simply Luca.

But those moments never lasted long.

Because his world always came looking for him.

"My father built everything I have," Luca finally said.

Isabella stayed quiet.

"He taught me that weakness was something people used against you. He taught me that trust was expensive and loyalty was rare."

His expression darkened.

"I learned very young that people closest to you could hurt you the most."

Isabella understood then.

The coldness.

The control.

The walls.

They weren't because Luca felt nothing.

They were because he felt too much and didn't know what to do with it.

"What happened to him?" she asked.

Luca looked toward the window.

"He left me with an empire and enemies."

The answer was simple.

But the pain behind it wasn't.

Isabella stepped closer.

"You don't have to carry everything alone."

Luca looked at her.

"You still don't understand."

"Then help me understand."

For several seconds, he simply stared at her.

Then he reached for her hand.

A simple gesture.

But from Luca, it meant everything.

"You're becoming the only thing in my life I can't control."

Her breath caught.

"And that bothers you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because everything I love becomes something people can use against me."

The words were heavier than she expected.

Isabella squeezed his hand.

"Then maybe stop seeing me as a weakness."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"Then what are you?"

She held his gaze.

"Someone who chose to stay."

For the first time, Luca looked completely speechless.

Outside, the city continued moving.

Cars passed.

People lived their ordinary lives.

But inside that penthouse, something changed.

The challenge between them had started as a game.

A test.

A temporary arrangement.

But somewhere along the way, it had become something neither of them expected.

Something dangerous.

Something real.

Later that night, Isabella stood in front of the mirror, thinking about everything she had learned.

She had entered Luca's world expecting mystery.

She had expected excitement.

She had expected temptation.

But she never expected to find a wounded man hiding behind a powerful name.

And that scared her.

Because the more she discovered about Luca, the harder it became to walk away.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

Her smile disappeared as she read it.

You don't know who you're sleeping beside.

Her heartbeat quickened.

Another message appeared.

Luca doesn't tell people the truth. Ask him what happened five years ago.

Isabella stared at the screen.

Five years ago.

Something about those words felt important.

Before she could think further, the message disappeared.

Deleted.

As if it had never existed.

But Isabella knew what she had seen.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew about her.

And someone wanted her to doubt Luca.

When Luca returned to the room, he immediately noticed the change in her expression.

"What happened?"

She looked at him.

For a moment, she considered hiding it.

But she remembered what she told him.

Trust required honesty.

So she handed him the phone.

Luca read the message.

And for the first time since she met him, Isabella saw something she never expected.

Fear.

Not for himself.

For her.

His jaw tightened.

"Isabella, listen to me carefully."

The seriousness in his voice made her nervous.

"What?"

"From this moment, you do not go anywhere alone."

She frowned.

"Luca"

"No."

His voice was firm.

But beneath the command was something else.

Concern.

"You have become important to people who want to hurt me."

Isabella looked at him.

"And what about what I want?"

His expression softened slightly.

"That's exactly what scares me."

Because Luca knew something she didn't.

The 90-day challenge was no longer the most dangerous game they were playing.

The real danger was that somewhere between desire and secrets…

They had fallen into something neither of them could easily escape.

And now, someone was determined to tear them apart.
