Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven (Love confessed… heart shattered… truth revealed)

The words hung between us, fragile… exposed… irreversible.

For a second, I thought everything would change.

That he would step forward.

That he would pull me into his arms.

That all this pain would finally mean something.

But he didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't even blink.

And slowly…

That hope inside me started to crack.

"Say something…" I whispered, my voice barely steady.

Daniel exhaled sharply, dragging his hand down his face like he was trying to hold himself together.

"You shouldn't have come here."

The words hit me instantly.

Cold.

Distant.

Wrong.

My brows furrowed. "What?"

"I told you to figure things out," he said, his voice tight. "Not chase me across the city."

My chest tightened painfully.

"I wasn't chasing you," I said, even though deep down… I knew I was. "I came because I finally understand how I feel."

He shook his head, letting out a quiet, frustrated laugh.

"No, Amara… you came because you're confused."

That stung.

"I'm not confused," I said, stepping closer. "I know what I feel—"

"No, you don't!" he snapped suddenly.

I flinched.

The intensity in his voice caught me off guard.

"You think this is love because everything else fell apart," he continued, his eyes dark now. "Because you lost Tunde. Because I left. So now you're here, trying to hold onto whatever is left."

"That's not true!" I fired back, tears already building in my eyes. "Don't tell me what I feel!"

"Then what is it, Amara?" he challenged. "Because this doesn't look like love. It looks like desperation."

The word hit deeper than anything else.

Desperation.

Was that what I was?

"No…" I whispered, shaking my head. "That's not fair…"

"Nothing about this is fair," he said, his voice dropping again—but this time, it wasn't anger.

It was pain.

"You had me," he continued quietly. "Before everything got complicated… before feelings got involved… you had me."

My chest tightened.

"And I stayed away," he added. "I kept my distance. I watched you be with someone else… and I said nothing."

His jaw clenched.

"Do you have any idea what that felt like?"

Tears slipped down my cheeks.

Because now…

I did.

"And now you come here," he went on, his voice breaking slightly, "after everything is already ruined… and you say you love me?"

I stepped closer again, my voice trembling. "Because I do. I didn't understand it before, but I do now—"

"It's too late."

Everything inside me stopped.

"What…?" I whispered.

Daniel looked away.

That alone was enough to make my heart drop.

"It's too late, Amara."

"No," I said quickly, shaking my head. "No, it's not— we can fix this. We can figure it out together, just like we always do—"

"There is no 'we'."

The words landed like a final blow.

Clean.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

I felt it this time.

That crack inside my chest?

It shattered completely.

Silence filled the space between us, but it wasn't the same silence as before.

This one…

Hurt.

"You don't mean that," I said softly, even though my voice had lost its strength.

He didn't answer.

Didn't look at me.

And somehow…

That was worse.

"Look at me and say it," I pleaded. "Tell me you don't feel anything. Tell me you don't love me."

Slowly… painfully slowly…

Daniel turned back to me.

And the moment our eyes met…

I saw it.

Everything he had been trying to hide.

Love.

Pain.

Conflict.

Regret.

But also…

Resolve.

"I love you," he said quietly.

My heart jumped.

Hope rushed in so fast it almost made me dizzy.

But then—

"I just don't want you anymore."

Everything went silent.

Not just around me.

Inside me.

Completely.

Gone.

I took a step back like I had been physically hit.

"No…" I whispered.

"I can't do this," he continued, his voice steadier now. "I can't be the person you choose after everything else falls apart."

"That's not what this is!" I cried. "Why won't you believe me?"

"Because I know you," he said. "And I know what this situation looks like."

Tears blurred my vision.

"So that's it?" I asked. "You're just going to walk away? After everything we've been through?"

He hesitated.

And for a second…

I thought he might break.

But he didn't.

"I already did," he said quietly.

The wind picked up slightly, the sound of waves crashing louder now.

But none of it mattered.

Because the only thing I could hear…

Was my heart breaking.

"Is there… someone else?" I asked, my voice small now. Fragile.

I didn't know why I asked.

Maybe I needed something to blame.

Something that wasn't me.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation?

It told me everything.

My stomach dropped.

"…Daniel?"

He closed his eyes briefly before finally speaking.

"There's someone I'm supposed to meet here."

The words didn't register at first.

"…What?"

He exhaled slowly. "My parents arranged it. They think it's time I… move on. Start something serious."

My heart sank deeper.

No.

No, this couldn't—

"I wasn't going to do it," he added quickly. "I didn't even want to be here for that reason."

"Then why are you?" I asked, my voice breaking again.

"Because I knew if I stayed… I'd keep choosing you."

That hurt more than everything else combined.

A soft voice suddenly came from behind him.

"Daniel?"

I froze.

Slowly… I looked past him.

And there she was.

A girl.

Standing a few steps away.

Beautiful. Calm. Unaware of the storm she just walked into.

My heart dropped to a place I didn't think existed.

Daniel turned slightly, his expression tightening.

And in that moment…

I understood.

I wasn't just late.

I was replaced.

Tears streamed down my face as I took another step back.

My chest felt empty now.

Completely empty.

"I see…" I whispered.

Daniel stepped forward slightly. "Amara—"

"It's fine," I cut in quickly, even though nothing was fine. "You don't have to explain."

Because what was left to explain?

I came.

I confessed.

And I still lost.

"I hope she makes you happy," I said softly.

The words tasted like pain.

Like defeat.

Like goodbye.

Then I turned around.

And this time…

I didn't look back.
