Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: The Spreading Branches

THE WORLD TREE OF ASHA

Three weeks had passed since the Mountain Clan's retreat, and every second brought change to Asha Village. The numbers in Kira's mind ticked upward without pause, a steady rhythm that had become as familiar as her own heartbeat:

GUARDIAN: The Root

LEVEL: 1

TOTAL FAITH: 3,247.8

FAITH PER SECOND: 0.375

REQUIRED FOR LEVEL 2: 10,000

CURRENT CAP: 1,000,000

CHOSEN FIGHTERS: 126 (Levels 1–3)

ABILITIES GRANTED: Root Touch (F-Rank), Soil Strength (F-Rank), Water Sense (E-Rank)

TERRITORY SIZE: 1.2x Village Size (Slow expansion active – grows 0.1% daily at Level 1)

The land itself was shifting with The Root's growth. The stream from the tree had filled the village wells, and fertile soil spread outward from the clearing like ripples in water—each day, the territory edge crept a few feet further, turning dusty clay back to black earth. Wild grasses and flowers sprouted in places that had been barren for years, and birds had begun nesting in The Root's branches once more.

"Look there," Tano said, pointing to the eastern hillside. "The edge just crossed the old stone marker—we now control the abandoned farmlands."

Kira nodded, watching as two families moved to settle the reclaimed land. Each new home built within the territory boosted faith slightly, as people felt the Guardian's protection more deeply. Those who worked the soil gave mid faith (0.3) on average, their trust strengthened by full harvests after years of scarcity.

"We're gaining about 32,400 faith per day now," she calculated. "At this rate, we'll hit Level 2 in just over two weeks."

But the expansion hadn't gone unnoticed. Greenwater Village's territory border now lay less than a mile from Asha's growing edge, and their Solar Oak—Level 2, total faith 28,712.3, faith per second 2.65—had begun pushing its own territory outward faster in response. Where The Root's expansion was slow and steady, the Solar Oak's growth was aggressive, its golden light scorching plants that didn't belong to its domain.

"They're trying to box us in," said Borin, now a Level 3 fighter with mid faith (0.3) that climbed higher with every patrol he led. "Their territory edge is moving twice as fast as ours—they want to cut off access to the northern forest before we can reach it."

The northern forest was critical—filled with wild game, medicinal herbs, and ancient trees that could strengthen The Root's connection to the land. If Greenwater claimed it first, Asha's growth would be stunted for years.

That afternoon, as Kira led a group to map the new territory boundaries, they found Greenwater's warriors waiting at the edge of the forest. Their leader—Lyra, the same woman who had mocked The Root a month earlier—stood with ten fighters, all Level 5 or higher, their weapons gleaming with golden light.

"Your little tree has grown some leaves," Lyra said, her voice cold as she gestured to the expanding green line of Asha's territory. "But the Solar Oak claims all land within five miles of its temple. This forest is ours."

"The land belongs to whoever the Guardian can protect," Kira replied, her E-rank Water Sense letting her feel the underground streams that flowed toward The Root. The territory edge was already creeping toward the forest, adding a foot every hour as faith continued to build.

"Protection?" Lyra laughed, drawing her golden sword. "Lord Solas grants us strength beyond your wildest dreams. Look at our levels—we're twice as strong as your best fighters. Surrender this land now, swear fealty to the Solar Oak, and we'll let you keep your village as a vassal."

Behind Kira, the believers stood their ground. Their amulets glowed with green light, and some had already unlocked Soil Strength—their skin hardening like bark when they focused their faith.

"We won't surrender what's ours," Kira said firmly. "The Root is growing, and with every second, our faith—and our territory—gets stronger."

Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Then you leave us no choice. Attack!"

The Greenwater fighters charged, their swords and spears trailing golden flames. Kira and her group met them, and this time, the fight was more even. The Root's territory gave them an advantage—within its bounds, their strength was boosted by 10%, while the Solar Oak's blessed weapons lost 5% of their power.

During the clash, a young woman named Zara threw herself between a Greenwater warrior and a group of farmers who had come to watch. As she blocked a blow with her staff, her faith surged from low 0.1 to high 0.7.

Faith strengthened by courage, The Root's voice echoed. Zara's faith now 0.7. Total faith: 3,248.5. Faith per second: 0.376

As more believers joined the fight, their combined faith pushed The Root's growth forward faster. The territory edge leaped ten feet in a single minute, crossing into the forest and causing the trees there to glow with faint green light—pledging their allegiance to The Root.

"Look!" one of the Greenwater fighters shouted, pointing at the forest. "The trees are turning against us!"

Lyra spun around, her face twisted with rage as she saw the golden light of her Guardian fading in the newly claimed land. The Solar Oak's territory could not overlap with another Guardian's, and as The Root's edge expanded, Greenwater's hold on the area weakened.

Kira felt a surge of power as the territory grew—her Level 3 strength jumping to Level 4 for as long as she stood within the new forest boundaries. With a cry, she pushed forward, her staff striking Lyra's sword and sending sparks flying.

"We're not just fighting for land," Kira called out to the Greenwater warriors. "We're fighting for choice. You believe in your Guardian, and we believe in ours. Why can't both trees grow?"

Lyra hesitated, her sword wavering as she felt the ground beneath her shift—from the Solar Oak's golden soil to The Root's dark earth. Her strength diminished slightly, and she knew she couldn't hold the forest if The Root's faith continued to rise.

"Retreat," she ordered sharply, backing away with her fighters. "This isn't over. When the Solar Oak reaches Level 3, its territory will expand tenfold—you won't be able to stop it."

As they left, Kira and her group stood at the edge of the forest, watching as The Root's territory continued its slow, steady spread. The numbers in her mind had jumped again:

GUARDIAN: The Root

LEVEL: 1

TOTAL FAITH: 3,892.1

FAITH PER SECOND: 0.442

REQUIRED FOR LEVEL 2: 10,000

CURRENT CAP: 1,000,000

CHOSEN FIGHTERS: 138 (Levels 1–4)

ABILITIES GRANTED: Root Touch (F-Rank), Soil Strength (F-Rank), Water Sense (E-Rank)

TERRITORY SIZE: 1.5x Village Size (Expansion rate increased to 0.2% daily due to new land claim)

The forest trees now responded to The Root's call, their own life force adding to the Guardian's strength. Wild animals began to return—deer, rabbits, and even a pack of wolves that seemed to recognize the territory boundaries, hunting only within the safe limits of Asha's land.

That evening, as the village gathered to celebrate their victory, Kira climbed to the highest branch of The Root that she could reach. From there, she could see the Solar Oak's golden spires in the distance, and beyond that, the dark mountains where the Storm Cypress stood. She knew that every level The Root gained would bring faster expansion—Level 2 would double the territory size automatically, with daily growth jumping to 1%, and each subsequent level would multiply both the base size and expansion rate.

But she also knew that Greenwater was already working to push their Guardian to Level 3. They needed 100,000 total faith—ten times Level 2's requirement—and they were already more than halfway there, with a faith per second rate that would get them there in less than a month.

As the sun set, The Root's voice spoke in her mind once more:

Every level brings greater territory and power, but also greater attention from other Guardians. When we reach Level 2, we will be able to grant C-rank abilities, and our territory will expand to cover all land within a mile of the village. But we must be ready—for with growth comes conflict.

Kira looked down at the villagers below, their faces lit by the warm glow of bonfires and the soft green light of The Root. Every second they lived, worked, and believed added to the Guardian's strength.

And in just over two weeks, they would take their next great step forward.
