Chapter 4 - Chapter 2: continuation

THE WORLD TREE OF ASHA

By dawn the next day, The Root had begun to share its knowledge—guiding the village's development with clear, practical visions that appeared to the chosen leaders as they slept.

For food, the Guardian's voice echoed in Kira's dreams, showing her images of crops that would thrive in the reclaimed soil. Plant river wheat in the lowlands—its roots will strengthen the riverbanks. Grow sun berries on the eastern hills—they will ripen even in partial shade and provide rich nutrients. For protein, cultivate freshwater snails in the expanded stream and raise feathered goats—they adapt well to our territory's growing grasslands.

When she woke, Kira gathered the village's farmers and shared the visions. Within hours, seeds and young plants began to appear at The Root's base—gifted by the Guardian, grown from its own life force. As they planted, the faith of the farmers climbed higher; those who had given low faith (0.1) now gave mid faith (0.3), their belief solidified by tangible guidance.

FAITH PER SECOND INCREASED TO 0.487

TOTAL FAITH: 4,219.3

For tools, the visions continued. Use wood from the northern forest's ironbark trees—they are strong as metal but lighter to carry. Shape them with stone from the western ridge—its grain will hold sharp edges. I will grant the ability Craft Sense (E-Rank) to those who dedicate themselves to building our village's tools and structures.

Borin, who had once been a carpenter before the hard years, stepped forward to lead the craft workers. As he touched The Root's bark to receive the new ability, his faith surged from mid (0.3) to high (0.7).

Your dedication to building our community strengthens your belief, the Guardian told him. With Craft Sense, you will know how to shape materials for maximum strength and utility.

Within days, ironbark tools replaced the village's worn wooden ones. Plows cut through the soil with ease, axes split wood cleanly, and baskets woven from river reeds held twice as much as before. The new tools let the villagers work faster, freeing up time to build better homes and expand their farms—each improvement adding to their faith and pushing the territory edge further outward.

For settlement, The Root showed them a plan for the expanding village. Build the new homes in a spiral pattern around me—each ring will strengthen the flow of life energy through our land. Place the food storage in the center of the spiral, the craft halls on the eastern side near the forest, and the healing huts on the western side near the stream. Dig channels to direct water from the stream to the farmlands—they will prevent flooding and keep the soil fertile year-round.

As the villagers began to follow the plan, the territory expanded faster. Every structure built within the spiral added 0.01 to the total faith, and the organized layout made life easier—reducing conflict and helping people support one another. Within a week, Asha Village had grown from a cluster of huts to a planned settlement, with space to welcome more families who had heard of The Root's guidance.

Three families from a nearby village that had lost its Guardian arrived on the fifth day. They had been living as refugees near Greenwater, but the Solar Oak's strict rules—requiring them to give absolute faith (1.0) and work only in the temple's fields—had pushed them away.

"We heard your Guardian not only gives strength but shows you how to live well," their leader, Mara, said as she knelt before The Root. "We want to believe, and we want to build our lives here."

New believers – 14 people total. Average faith: 0.4 (mix of low, mid, and high). Total faith increased by 5.6.

FAITH PER SECOND: 0.562

TOTAL FAITH: 5,873.9

TERRITORY SIZE: 1.8x Village Size (Expansion rate 0.3% daily)

Mara, who had experience in pottery, was granted Craft Sense and quickly began making water jars and storage vessels that kept food fresh twice as long. Her children, who helped tend the sun berry fields, found their faith growing from low to mid as they watched the plants thrive under The Root's guidance.

But Greenwater was not idle. A messenger arrived three days later, carrying a proclamation from their temple:

"All lands within ten miles of the Solar Oak belong to our Guardian. Any village that refuses to swear fealty will be cut off from trade routes, and their water sources will be redirected by the Solar Oak's power. We offer one last chance—join us before we reach Level 3, and you will be part of a great nation. Resist, and you will be left to wither."

Kira read the proclamation aloud to the village, then looked to The Root for guidance.

They seek to control through fear, the Guardian responded. We will grow through cooperation. Focus on our development—when we reach Level 2, we will be able to create a trade route of our own, connecting with other small villages that seek freedom to follow their own Guardians. I will guide us to build a bridge across the river, opening access to the southern plains where wild grains grow and other potential believers live.

Work on the bridge began immediately. The Root showed them how to use ironbark beams and stone foundations that would withstand floods and storms. As the structure took shape, more people came to watch—and to believe. Two travelers passing through joined the village, adding their faith and their skills as masons.

Faith per second now 0.638. Total faith: 7,921.4. Time to Level 2: 8 days.

On the seventh day of building, the bridge was nearly complete. As Kira placed the final beam in place, The Root shared a new vision—one of other Guardians, scattered across the land, each guiding their people in different ways: a river guardian teaching fishing and boat building, a mountain guardian showing how to mine and forge metal, a wind guardian guiding travel and communication.

We are not alone, the Guardian said. When we reach higher levels, we will be able to communicate with other Guardians who share our vision of balance. But first, we must prove that our way—guiding our people to grow strong through care, not control—can succeed.

That evening, as the sun set over the finished bridge, the territory edge expanded dramatically—jumping to 2x the original village size. The southern plains were now part of Asha's domain, and wild grain fields stretched as far as the eye could see. The numbers in Kira's mind surged:

GUARDIAN: The Root

LEVEL: 1

TOTAL FAITH: 9,845.2

FAITH PER SECOND: 0.711

REQUIRED FOR LEVEL 2: 10,000

CURRENT CAP: 1,000,000

CHOSEN FIGHTERS: 189 (Levels 1–5)

ABILITIES GRANTED: Root Touch (F-Rank), Soil Strength (F-Rank), Water Sense (E-Rank), Craft Sense (E-Rank)

TERRITORY SIZE: 2x Village Size (Expansion rate 0.5% daily)

DEVELOPMENT COMPLETE: Farmlands, Craft Halls, Healing Huts, Water Channels, Ironbark Bridge

As the villagers gathered to celebrate, Kira could feel the energy building in The Root. Every second brought them closer—just 154.8 faith more to reach Level 2. When they did, the Guardian would double their territory automatically, grant C-rank abilities, and unlock new guidance for more advanced development: better tools, more diverse crops, and structures that could protect them from even the strongest attacks.

But she also knew that Greenwater was only days away from reaching Level 3. Their Solar Oak would soon expand its territory tenfold, and they would not hesitate to take what they believed was theirs.

Tomorrow at sunrise, The Root's voice said firmly, we will reach Level 2. Be ready—our growth will bring both new opportunities and new challenges. I will guide us to build a wall around the expanded territory, not to keep people out, but to protect the life we have built together.

Kira looked out over the thriving village, the fertile fields, and the sturdy bridge that connected them to new lands. Every tool, every crop, every building had been shaped by The Root's guidance—and every second of work had strengthened their faith in return.

The next day would change everything.
