Chapter 2 - FIRST EVOLUTION

CHAPTER 2: First Evolution

The Crash Site

Ryan wakes in a crater of shattered metal and scorched earth. Pain lances through him—left leg twisted, ribs cracked, blood pooling beneath him. The pod around him is destroyed, black smoke curling into an alien sky.

The sky is… wrong. Too blue. One sun, but the light feels sharper, colder. He coughs, tastes copper mixed with something alive in the air. Something… active.

[SYSTEM LOG: Atmospheric analysis… complete]

Oxygen-nitrogen base. Foreign particulate detected. Classification: UNKNOWN. Bio-reactive. Cellular absorption rate: 0.003% per minute.

Ryan blinks, vision flickering with amber warnings.

[SYSTEM LOG: Core integrity: 23%]

Critical damage to: left femur, three ribs, liver laceration. Blood loss: severe.

He tries to move. Screams. His sound echoes through towering trees, silver-white bark gleaming, leaves shimmering faintly.

Wait—the leaves are glowing.

A wet, heavy crunching sound draws his attention.

Three creatures emerge through the smoke. Wolf-shaped—but wrong. Too large, muscles coiling like steel springs, shoulder height of horses. Crimson fur, matted with dried blood. Black, hollow eyes. Teeth glowing faintly, humming with the same energy as the leaves.

The lead beast locks onto him. Sniffs. Its jaw unhinges, stretching unnaturally wide, rows of needle-sharp teeth glinting.

Ryan drags his useless leg backward. Muscles scream.

[SYSTEM LOG: CRITICAL THREAT DETECTED]

Host survival probability: 0.04%.

Combat database: CORRUPTED.

Available functions: LIMITED. Analyzing threat…

The wolf lunges.

Ryan flails. Teeth clamp onto his forearm—white-hot pain, bone grinding.

[SYSTEM LOG: Bloodfang Wolf. Low-tier magical beast. Dermal reinforcement: minor. Kinetic output: lethal. Threat assessment: TERMINAL.]

The beast shakes him like a ragdoll. Rocks bite his face. The second beast circles, waiting.

[SYSTEM LOG: Host cannot escape. Host cannot fight. Biological material insufficient for standard enhancement.]

Alternative analysis…

The first wolf rears back for the kill. Ryan sees death in its black eyes.

[SYSTEM LOG: SOLUTION FOUND. Prototype function. Success probability: 34%. Side effects: UNKNOWN.]

Execute?

Ryan can't respond. Can't breathe. Teeth descend.

[SYSTEM LOG: Survival mandate overriding user consent]

Executing: EMERGENT ADAPTATION.

The Engine Intervenes

A burning liquid surges through his veins. His shattered leg twists, bones grinding and reforging, silver threads pulling from pod debris. Muscles swell, fibers tearing and healing in seconds.

His eyes snap open. The world slows. He sees the wolf's jaw descending frame by frame.

[SYSTEM LOG: Neural acceleration: 400% | Duration: 12s]

Muscular enhancement: Temporary. Cost: Cellular degradation 2.3% lifespan.

Host capability increased: 340%

WARNING: System instability. Core corruption spreading.

Ryan moves—jerky, too fast. Bones creak like breaking wood. A shard of pod metal in hand, he sees targeting vectors glowing in his vision, highlighting the wolf's throat where fur thins.

He strikes. Metal sinks deep. Black blood sprays. The wolf thrashes violently, but Ryan holds fast, sawing downward until the beast collapses, twitching.

Twelve seconds end.

Ryan collapses, screaming. Muscles deflate, nerves burn. His body returns to broken human. He lies among blood—his and the beast's—while the other two wolves circle, confused.

[SYSTEM LOG: Combat adaptation complete. Data recorded. Core corruption: 28%. Host status: Critical. Second engagement: impossible.]

Recommendation: Escape. Hide. Survive.

Ryan crawls into a hollow beneath twisted roots. The wolves sniff and scratch but eventually retreat to feed on their dead pack-mate. Darkness closes around him.

[SYSTEM LOG: Emergency adaptation successful. New function unlocked: COMBAT PROTOCOL [CORRUPTED]]

Requirements for stabilization: Biological material from magical source. Energy signature match: Bloodfang Wolf.

Directive: Consume. Integrate. Evolve.

Ryan stares at his bloody hands. The Engine… wants him to eat it? Or become it?

Hours later, Ryan wakes. Forest is quiet. The dead wolf is gone. Dragged away? Consumed? He doesn't know.

Footprints. Human-shaped. Weight distribution wrong. Someone—or something—passed here. A cultivator, perhaps, and ignored the carnage.

Ryan is alone. Broken. System warnings flicker: "mana saturation," "foreign energy integration." His body is changing, slowly, whether he wants it or not.

Distant voices. Multiple humans, returning from a hunt.

[SYSTEM LOG: Civilization detected. Threat assessment: UNKNOWN]

Recommendation: Avoid contact until—ERROR

Until host achieves minimum combat viability. Estimated time: 47 days.

Ryan laughs, low and hysterical. "47 days… Then I'll evolve faster," he whispers.

The Engine doesn't respond. But somewhere in its corrupted code… interest flickers.
