Chapter 103 - Dorniphus Forest

In that moment, amidst the darkness of Dorniphus Forest, a fragile bond of life and friendship flickered anew. An amber of hope against the encroaching shadows.

Waylinn groaned, a deep, guttural sound of frustration and anger. A voice echoed through the dimness just when he was ready to seize anyone who dared follow them.

His mind sank. He had thought their escape from Nauvichsa was flawless. But now it was clear there had been a fatal mistake. Someone had tracked them. They moved silently and unseen, a phantom lurking just beyond his senses.

From the depths of the darkness, the figures began to emerge, shapes that sent a chill down Waylinn's spine. It was they: the witches, Dorian, and Alaric. Their presence was as unsettling as the night itself, cloaked in mystery and menace

"You don't need to be cautious. After all, our presences don't have bad intentions." Dorian said smoothly. His voice was calm yet laced with an unsettling confidence.

Slowly, he pulled back the veils that concealed his face. The revealing eyes that gleamed with an odd and unreadable emotion.

Waylinn's muscles tensed, every instinct screaming that this was a lie. Their words were poison. It was designed to lull him into a false sense of security.

He had learned long ago not to trust the witches' silver tongues. Their presence surfeited him with a bitter taste of betrayal and danger.

He would never believe their fine words again. The time for mercy had passed. This was the perfect moment to make them pay for what they had done to Heka. The pain they had inflicted on his friend burned like a fire in his veins.

With a fierce glare, Waylinn took a step forward, his resolve hardening like steel. He left his sword behind. He placed it carefully near Heka to guard him, knowing that his priority was to protect his friend's fragile life.

Now, it was his bare hands and unyielding will that would confront the witches.

The vibe crackled with tension. The forest around them seemed to hold its breath as the inevitable clash drew near. Waylinn's eyes locked onto Dorian and Alaric, ready to face whatever darkness they brought with them.

Dorian smirked, a cold, calculating smile that sent a shiver down Waylinn's spine. With a deliberate motion, he extended his hand and revealed a small vial filled with a shimmering, iridescent potion.

"I just came to give you this potion. It will regain its consciousness. As you well know, soul delivery is not enough." He said smoothly. His voice dripped with condescension.

Without waiting for a response, Dorian carefully placed the potion on the ground. Its vial glass caught the faint light and sparkled like a beacon of fragile hope. Then, with a casual step backward, he maintained his distance. His eyes never left Waylinn's gaze.

He continued, his tone mocking and sharp. "It's truly hilarious. You blame someone else for the mistake you made yourself. You know as well if his presence is your biggest mistake."

The words hung in the air like a venomous taunt, cutting deep into Waylinn's resolve. Before he could react, Dorian melted back into the shadow. He disappeared as silently as he had come, leaving behind only the faintest trace of his presence.

From the darkness, Alaric's lips curled into a cruel smirk. His eyes gleamed with malicious amusement. His mocking gaze swept over Waylinn and Heka, as if savoring their pain and helplessness.

The silent sneer was a clear message. He reveled in their suffering and the chaos that had unfolded.

The forest seemed to close in around them, the oppressive silence broken only by the distant rustling of leaves and the faint. The shimmering glow of the potion rested on the ground.

Waylinn's fists clenched tightly, his mind racing with a mixture of anger, desperation, and a flicker of hope that the potion might be the key to saving Heka.

Dorian's words struck Waylinn like a cold blade, slicing through the fragile hope that had kept him going. The truth in those words was undeniable.

He had never supposed to bring Heka into the immortal realm. This place was fraught with dangers beyond mortal comprehension. The weight of his mistake pressed heavily on his shoulders. It filled him with a gnawing fear and regret.

Waylinn stepped forward cautiously, his eyes fixed on the potion Dorian had left behind. He reached out and took the vial, feeling its cool surface against his skin.

Doubt flickered in his heart. Was this potion truly a cure, or a hidden poison meant to finish what the witches had started? Giving it to Heka was a gamble, a desperate bet with fate itself.

Yet, as he looked down at his friend's pale, fragile form, Waylinn realized he had no other choice. Heka's life was no longer hanging by a thread; the immediate danger had passed.

Now, the best chance for survival lay beyond the dark forest, in the realm of Kiervant Sky, where Marchio awaited. His powers were said to transcend even death.

With a heavy breath, Waylinn made his decision. He would take the risk. He would accept whatever consequences came from his selfish act of dragging Heka into these perilous vibes. His own life no longer mattered; all that counted was saving his friend.

"Heka, drink this…" Waylinn murmured. He placed the vial gently into Heka's trembling palm.

Heka's hand shook as he grasped the potion. His fingers were barely steady enough to unscrew the lid. With a faint, weary sigh, he drank the shimmering liquid.

Like Waylinn, he had reached a point where he no longer cared for his own survival. The pain, the endless battles, the constant brush with death. It had all worn him down.

But beneath the exhaustion, a quiet understanding settled within him. Perhaps his death would bring pleasure to those around him, a release from the burdens he carried.

Maybe, in letting go, he would make life easier for others. After all, he had faced the edge of life countless times before. Each time of his returning was more broken than the last.

As the potion's warmth spread through his veins, a fragile hope flickered in both their hearts. A hope that this gamble might yet save them, that the darkness could be pushed back, if only for a little while longer.

Once more, he survived. The potion worked its quiet miracle, weaving its magic through his veins and pulling him back from the brink. Slowly, the fog that had clouded his mind began to lift.

His eyes, once blurred and unfocused, cleared to reveal the world around him with sharp, vivid detail. And there, standing just beyond his gaze, was Waylinn, steadfast, watchful, and unwavering.

A weird mixture of relief and sorrow welled up inside Heka. He let out a bitter, trembling cackle that soon gave way to tears.

His voice cracked as he spoke, raw with regret and exhaustion. "Waylinn, I'm sorry for everything."

The words hung heavy in the air. It was a confession of guilt and gratitude intertwined.

Though his body was still weak and his limbs trembled with frailty, Heka summoned every ounce of strength he had left and tried to stand. His movements were unsteady, but his determination was fierce. He refused to give in, not yet.

Waylinn stepped forward, his voice gentle but firm. "Let's go home."

The simplicity of the words carried a profound weight, a promise of safety and belonging after the long ordeal they had endured.

Heka's lips curled into a faint, weary smile. A smile that spoke of hope rekindled and the comfort of friendship that had never wavered.

Together, they prepared to leave the dark forest behind.
