Chapter 16 - Chapter 17: Tournament Tension

The gym smelled of sweat, excitement, and freshly polished floors. Today was the first inter-school tournament, and the energy was electric. Banners waved, parents cheered, and I clutched my notebook, trying to focus on reporting—but honestly, my attention was almost entirely on Aiden.

He was warming up, moving with that effortless grace that always made my chest race. Our eyes met briefly, and he smirked—a private signal, just for me. My heart skipped.

Coach Ramirez blew the whistle. The game started, and Aiden immediately took charge. Every pass, every jump, every shout showed why he was the star. I scribbled notes furiously, but I couldn't stop noticing the way he kept glancing my way.

Then came Marco. He was playing for the rival team. The moment Aiden got close to scoring, Marco intercepted the ball, shooting a sly grin at me as if daring me to react. My stomach tightened.

Aiden noticed. His jaw set, and he motioned to me mid-game, a quick wink that made my heart race. I realized… he was protecting us, even in the middle of the game.

The match was intense. Back and forth. Points added and lost in seconds. Every time Aiden passed the ball to a teammate, I noticed the subtle way he communicated silently—just like he had done with me before.

During a timeout, he jogged over to me. "Ready for the final push?" he asked, breathless but smiling.

"I'm ready," I said, voice steady, though my heart was pounding.

"Good. Watch me," he said, then turned back to the court with that determined glint in his eyes.

The final moments were chaotic. Aiden made a perfect pass, another teammate scored, and the buzzer rang. Victory! The crowd erupted. I cheered, heart soaring—not just for the team, but because we had done it together.

As the crowd dispersed, Aiden jogged over to me, sweaty but triumphant. "We won," he said, smirking. "And… we survived Marco's interference."

I laughed, cheeks warm. "Barely! That guy is relentless."

He leaned close, brushing a strand of hair from my face. "Not as relentless as me noticing you."

My heart raced. For the first time, I realized that high school, basketball, and rivalries weren't just challenges—they were the perfect backdrop for us to fall for each other.

And with Aiden by my side, I knew I was ready for whatever game came next.
