Chapter 14 - Chapter-13 : The Key To The Shadows

Mr. Kader led us down a narrow corridor that smelled of dust and mildew, his mop dragging quietly behind him.

"The key you need isn't a key in the traditional sense," he said. "It's an object. A relic. Something the school respects… or fears. Retrieve it, and you'll have leverage over the shadows—for a short time."

Lara groaned. "Of course it's a 'relic.' Why can't it be a pizza delivery or a magic flashlight?"

Felix muttered, "At this point, a pizza might save our lives."

Mira stayed silent, focusing on the hallways ahead. Her hands glowed faintly again, warding off the shadows that lingered like restless pets.

Kai, ever the strategist, asked, "Where is it?"

Mr. Kader's eyes gleamed. "In the old library. But beware—the school will try to stop you. Every trap it knows… it will use. And not all of them are predictable."

I swallowed hard. "Traps… predictable… yeah, nothing could possibly go wrong."

The library door creaked open. Dust swirled as if the room had been untouched for decades. Sunlight peeked through broken windows, casting eerie shadows that moved like they had a mind of their own.

"Perfect," Lara muttered. "A creepy library. My dream vacation spot."

Felix peeked in nervously. "Where… where's the key?"

Mr. Kader pointed to a pedestal in the center of the room. On it rested a small, black cube, etched with strange symbols that seemed to writhe under our gaze.

"That," Mr. Kader said, "is what you seek. The school won't give it up without a fight."

As if on cue, the shadows surged from the corners, twisting and snapping like black smoke with claws.

"RUN?" Felix whispered.

"No," Mira said sharply. "Steady. We move together. Distract, and I'll grab it."

Lara raised a chair like a sword. "Alright, darkness! Taste the power of my terrible jokes!"

The shadows hesitated. Lara grinned. "See? Works every time!"

Sarah grabbed my arm. "I'm counting on you, Felix. Use… something! Anything!"

I grabbed a broken broomstick nearby and swung it at the nearest shadow. It hissed and recoiled slightly. Not much, but it was enough.

Kai shouted, "Left flank! Keep them off Mira!"

Mira dashed toward the pedestal. Her hands glowed brighter than ever. The shadows twisted toward her but stopped, frozen by her presence.

"Almost… there…" she whispered.

And then—she grabbed the cube.

The shadows wailed like a living scream, swirling violently before retreating back into the corners. The room fell silent, except for our ragged breathing.

Lara collapsed dramatically. "Victory! We have a cube! Take that, ominous hallway! Take that, faceless freak! Also… somebody get me a snack."

Felix groaned. "I think I just aged ten years in there."

Sarah clutched the cube, examining it. "This… this is going to help us. But only for a short time. We need a real plan."

Mira stood beside her, exhausted but determined. "And we'll need every trick, every joke, every ounce of courage. Because the school isn't done with us yet."

I wiped sweat from my forehead. Somehow, I survived. Somehow, we all survived.

But I had a feeling that was only the beginning.
