The old gymnasium had been transformed into our war room. Dusty bleachers lined the walls, and the broken basketball hoops swayed slightly as if nodding in agreement.
"Alright, team," Sarah said, holding the cube like a holy relic, "this is it. Training for the trap. Everyone, listen carefully."
Lara immediately bounced in place, wielding a broken mop like a sword. "Step one: survive. Step two: survive with style. Step three: unleash humor on shadows. Step four: optional snack break."
Felix groaned, "I hate everything about this plan already."
Kai ignored him, drawing diagrams on the dusty floor with a piece of chalk. "We'll need precise coordination. Shadows follow fear patterns. Mira, your ability to freeze them must be synchronized with the cube's activation. Lara and Felix, you'll handle distractions. Chloe and Liam, guide them toward the trigger zones."
Mira nodded, glowing faintly. "I'll need complete focus. Any hesitation… and the shadows will exploit it."
Lara raised a brow. "Focus? Sure. Easy. What could possibly go wrong?"
Felix groaned again. "Don't encourage her…"
Training began. Lara ran through ridiculous obstacle courses while shouting jokes at imaginary shadows. "Why did the shadow fail math class? Because it couldn't find its angle!" she yelled.
Chloe and Liam guided us through simulated shadow movements, marking zones with chalk symbols. "Here, here, and here," Liam instructed. "If they pass these points, they hesitate—use it to your advantage."
Felix tripped over a bench. "This is why I hate obstacle courses. This is why I hate… life."
Sarah rolled her eyes. "Focus, Felix. Just follow instructions."
Kai timed everything, calling out intervals. "Mira, freeze now! Lara, distraction! Felix, block the right flank! Sarah, cube ready!"
Mira's hands glowed, freezing the imaginary shadows. Lara swung a chair wildly, yelling bad jokes. Felix bravely jabbed at the "threats," while Sarah held the cube steady, humming with power.
I ducked behind a bench, heart pounding, trying to memorize every movement. "This… this could work," I whispered.
After hours—or maybe minutes, time was distorted—the training drill ended. Everyone collapsed in heaps of exhaustion, laughing, groaning, and gasping for breath.
Lara, still holding her chair like a trophy, said, "Step one: survive. Step two: win! Step three: snacks!"
Felix groaned. "Step four: never do that again."
Sarah exhaled, examining the cube. "We're ready. But this is just practice. The real shadows won't be so forgiving."
Mira's glow dimmed slightly as she sank to the floor. "We're ready… but we need courage, trust, and perfect timing. The trap is our only chance to slow them down—maybe even turn the tide."
Kai adjusted his chalk diagrams. "If we fail… we learn. Then we try again. There's no other option."
I realized, staring at my exhausted but determined friends, that somehow, amidst the chaos and terror, we were forming a team. A real team.
And the next time the shadows came, we wouldn't just run. We'd fight. Together.
