Chapter 3 - The Meeting He Wasn’t Ready For

The conference room at Hayes Corporation was silent.

Too silent.

Senior executives sat around the long glass table, exchanging uneasy glances.

No one spoke.

Because today's meeting… wasn't normal.

"Are they here yet?" Daniel Hayes asked, adjusting his cufflinks, his tone calm—but impatient.

"Any minute, sir," his assistant replied.

Daniel leaned back in his chair, confidence written all over his face.

Carter Holdings.

One of the most powerful corporations in the country.

And today—

They requested a meeting with him.

A faint smirk tugged at his lips.

"Must be important," he muttered.

Across the table, Sophia Blake crossed her legs elegantly.

"Whoever the new owner is," she said, "they clearly know who to approach."

Daniel chuckled. "Of course they do."

Because in his world—

Power recognized power.

Outside the building—

A convoy of black cars came to a smooth stop.

Employees near the entrance froze.

"Is that… Carter Holdings?"

"Why are they here?"

"Wait—who's stepping out?"

The back door opened.

First—security.

Then—Robert Lang.

And then—

Her.

Emily Carter stepped out of the car.

Dressed in a fitted ivory suit, her heels striking the ground with quiet authority.

Her hair was sleek.

Her expression calm.

But her presence—

Unmistakable.

Heads turned instantly.

Whispers spread.

"Who is she?"

"Is she a celebrity?"

"No… she's with Carter Holdings…"

Emily didn't look at anyone.

Didn't acknowledge the attention.

Because she was no longer someone who needed to be seen—

She was someone who was noticed.

"Let's go," she said.

Inside the conference room—

The door opened.

Every head turned.

Daniel glanced up casually—

Then froze.

For a split second—

His mind didn't process it.

Because the woman walking in…

Couldn't be her.

But it was.

Emily Carter.

The room fell completely silent.

Her heels echoed against the marble floor as she walked in, Robert following just behind her.

Sophia's smile faded instantly.

"What is she doing here?" she whispered.

Daniel's expression hardened.

Confusion flickered… then irritation.

"Emily?" he said sharply. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Emily didn't answer.

Didn't even look at him.

Instead—

She walked past him.

Past everyone.

And stopped at the head of the table.

Daniel's seat.

The seat.

For a moment, no one breathed.

Then—

Emily pulled the chair out…

And sat down.

The air shifted.

Completely.

Robert stepped forward.

His voice calm. Professional.

"Good morning, everyone."

Still silence.

"I believe introductions are in order," he continued.

Daniel stood up abruptly.

"Excuse me," he snapped. "What is going on here? Why is she sitting there?"

Robert turned to him.

And then said the words that changed everything—

"This is Miss Emily Carter."

A pause.

"The sole owner of Carter Holdings."

No one moved.

No one spoke.

It was as if the entire room had stopped functioning.

Sophia blinked.

"What…?"

Daniel laughed.

A short, disbelieving laugh.

"This isn't funny," he said. "What kind of joke is this?"

Emily finally looked at him.

And for the first time—

There was no warmth in her eyes.

No hesitation.

No emotion.

Just calm.

"Sit down, Mr. Hayes," she said.

Her voice was soft.

But it carried.

And somehow—

It sounded like a command.

Daniel didn't move.

Because he couldn't.

Not yet.

"You're wasting everyone's time," he said coldly. "Whatever game you think you're playing—"

"Game?"

Emily tilted her head slightly.

Then—

She slid a file across the table.

It stopped right in front of him.

"Open it."

Two simple words.

Daniel hesitated.

Then, with visible irritation, he grabbed the file and flipped it open.

His expression changed instantly.

Color drained from his face.

Because inside—

Were official documents.

Ownership structure.

Signatures.

Verification seals.

Everything.

Everything—

Pointed to one truth.

Emily Carter.

Owner.

Carter Holdings.

"That's… impossible," Sophia whispered.

Daniel's grip tightened on the papers.

"This…" he started, his voice lower now. "This doesn't make any sense."

Emily leaned back slightly in her chair.

Calm.

Composed.

In control.

"It doesn't have to make sense to you," she said. "It just has to be real."

Silence.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Daniel looked up at her—

Really looked this time.

And suddenly—

He didn't recognize the woman in front of him anymore.

This wasn't the quiet, patient wife who waited for him every night.

This wasn't the woman he dismissed.

This—

Was someone else.

Emily folded her hands on the table.

"Now," she said smoothly, "shall we begin?"

No one objected.

Because no one could.

"Carter Holdings," she continued, "has decided to review all current partnerships."

Her eyes flicked briefly to Daniel.

Sharp.

Intentional.

"And we've found some… concerns."

Daniel straightened.

Trying to regain control.

"What kind of concerns?" he asked.

Emily's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something colder.

"Dependence," she said.

A pause.

"Your company relies heavily on our subsidiaries."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"And?" he challenged.

Emily leaned forward slightly.

Her gaze locked onto his.

"And I'm deciding… whether that support continues."

The message was clear.

Crystal clear.

His entire empire—

Was now standing on her decision.

Daniel stared at her.

Shock.

Disbelief.

And for the first time—

Something unfamiliar crept in.

Uncertainty.

Emily stood.

The meeting wasn't over.

But control had already shifted.

Completely.

"I'll give you time," she said calmly.

"Convince me why I shouldn't walk away."

She turned.

And began walking toward the door.

Then paused.

Without looking back—

"Mr. Hayes," she added softly,

"You said you'd never regret it."

A beat.

"Let's see if that's still true."

The door closed behind her.

And the silence she left behind—

Was louder than anything before.
