Chapter 23 - Sands of Fellowship

Senen fled Abydos under starlit cover, the Nile's whisper his only companion.

Echo replayed Setesh's vanishing rift every step—south toward Nubia, chaos trails fading into desert winds. His Wildborn clan—now 32 after losses—trailed weary: Dustdrift scouts veiling tracks, Ka-bind seers murmuring soul-soothing chants. Flux low, morale frayed, but Maat's fragile unity held. Senen's kohl-smeared eyes scanned dunes; Pharaoh's chariots would hunt soon.

Dawn broke gold over a forgotten oasis.

Mirage? No—laughter echoed. Four figures lounged by palm-shaded pools: linen-clad explorers, packs bulging relics, fire-roasted ibex sizzling. Brands hummed faint—not warriors, but adventurers chasing Nile legends. Senen signaled halt; clan melted into sands.

"Ho, priest!" A wiry woman waved—bronze skin, scarfed hair, Brand Dustveil cloaking her like shifting sands. "You look like Abydos spat you out. Share the flame?"

Senen approached cautious—Echo replayed no threat: relic-hunters, not Pharaoh's dogs. "Senen of Osiris temple. Chaos stirs—seek no part."

The group grinned. "Chaos? Our specialty!"

Meet the explorers:

Khesef, leader: Sandstride Brand—fleet-footed dune-surfing, carries wind-speed bursts (short 10m dashes). Jovial storyteller, Delta trader's son.

Merit, wiry scout: Dustveil—blends into terrain/emotions, perfect spy/prankster. Quick-tongued, beer-loving.

Tamit, burly engineer: Stonewhisper—manipulates rock/sand into tools/shields (crafts on fly). Quiet, ibex-roasting master.

Neferu, wiry youth: Lightweave—bends sunlight into illusions/lasers (playful tricks). Aspiring bard, terrible singer.

Light-hearted bond sparked instant.

Khesef shoved skewer: "Ibex beats temple gruel. Chaos tales for bites?" Senen sat wary—Echo confirmed genuine. Merit Dustveil'd a dune-rat illusion, making it "dance"—group howled. Tamit Stonewhisper'd a stone stool for Senen; Neferu Lightweave'd tiny Ra-birds circling his head.

"Echo priest, eh?" Khesef leaned. "Replays moments true? Show Abydos mess!"

Senen obliged—Echo on skewer: Setesh's rift-claw bisected scout replayed safe. Gasps, then cheers. "Wildborn heir! Joren stuff!" Merit punched arm: "Join us, sand-monk. Pharaoh's gold-hungry; we chase fun ruins."

Laughter flowed. Neferu sang off-key "Ode to Fractured Gods"—group pelted dates. Tamit crafted sand-puppets reenacting Senen's dodge; Khesef raced Senen via Sandstride—Echo barely kept pace, both collapsing giggling. Merit shared beer: "To chaos we outrun!"

Friendship sealed over oasis fire. Clan joined wary—accepted via ibex shares. Merit Dustveil'd whole camp invisible. "Pharaoh's chariots blind tonight." Stories swapped: explorers' Delta relic hauls, Senen's Great War echoes. Light-hearted respite—first since tomb.

"Where next?" Khesef asked, sketching map.

"Heliopolis," Senen said. "Second seal—shadow-sun Apep."

Group groaned playful: "Sun-god city? Sweaty doom!" Merit: "Illusion me a breeze." Laughter peaked.

Until Echo screamed.

Heliopolis burned at noon—second seal broken.

Pharaoh's second expedition—Memphis viziers, Ra-priests—encircled sun-disc altar under obelisk shadow. Vizier Ptahmose (Pharaoh's proxy) channeled Forgebind Brand into slab: Ptah-flames cracking wards. Nile amplifiers hummed; seal split.

Apep erupted.

Serpent colossal—ebon coils eclipsing Ra, maw devouring light. Brand: Eclipse Maw—light-eating void (30m radius), Brands dimmed (-50% Flux), illusions shattered, sun-fire reversed to frost. Feeds illumination; infinite under noon.

"Pharaoh's will!" Ptahmose yelled.

Apep hissed: "Light... mine." Viziers' Brands snuffed—Forgebind backlashed cold, priests' sun-chants froze throats. 40 dead instant—bodies light-drained to husks. Heliopolis panicked: markets plunged dark-day, obelisks wept shadow-ichor.

Apep slithered Delta-ward—Hyksos bait?

Senen's group raced in—oasis joy shattered.

Echo relayed carnage 20 miles out. Khesef Sandstride'd scout ahead: "Heliopolis void! Snake eating sun!" Merit paled: "Our relic contact—gone." Tamit gripped Stonewhisper fists. Neferu's Lightweave flickered nervous.

Senen steeled. "Second fracture. Explorers—with me?"

Khesef grinned fierce: "Sands or serpents—crew holds." Group clasped—light-hearted steel now.

Apep loomed. Fellowship charged.
