Chapter 17 - Rising Tension

The city felt heavier tonight. Not because of the noise or the traffic, but because of the invisible eyes that seemed to follow every step Elijah took. His golden Resonance pulsed faintly beneath his skin, reacting to things he couldn't yet see—shifts in energy, the subtle presence of Demos, and something else… something human, calculating, watching.

Maya walked beside him, silent but alert. "They're watching," she said quietly. "Not all of them are Demos. Some are Anchors… some are Wardens. And some… aren't on anyone's side."

Elijah's jaw tightened. That word—"watching"—brought back memories of the prophecy, the Fulcrum, and the warning that his power could bend the world if he survived it. Every step in Lagos was a test. Every action had consequences.

A sudden alarm blared from the Warden communications system. A major Demos surge had been reported in a crowded district. Civilians were trapped. The pulse of chaos reached Elijah even before he saw it.

Obinna muttered, "Of course it's now. Why is it always now?"

Elijah clenched his fists, golden light flaring in response. "We move. Now. No hesitation."

As they arrived, the scene was worse than reports suggested. Shadows moved unnaturally among terrified people, and several possessed civilians lunged blindly. Elijah's pulse accelerated, Resonance responding instantly, stabilizing the energy around the civilians and keeping the Demos at bay.

But even as he fought, a deeper unease settled over him. The golden glow of his power radiated outward, and he could feel the weight of attention—more than just Demos reacting. Forces beyond the city, beyond even the Wardens, were sensing him.

Maya's voice cut through the chaos: "Elijah… they're not just afraid. They're studying you. Every move you make is visible to them."

Fear and resolve warred inside him. I can't fail. Not here. Not now. Every life matters. Every choice matters.

By the time the surge was contained, Elijah was exhausted, golden light flickering weakly around him. Civilians were safe, but the city's pulse—its energy—felt altered. His power had left a mark, a signal that would attract attention far beyond Lagos.

He glanced at his teammates. Obinna's usual smirk was gone, replaced by a grim acknowledgment of what they had just faced. Lara's eyes were sharp, reading every shadow. Maya's calmness hid her concern.

Elijah exhaled, chest tight. They're watching. And I can feel it. Whatever comes next… it won't be just Demos.

The night swallowed the city, quiet once again, but Elijah knew the tension was only rising. Somewhere out there, the real threat was waiting—patient, calculating, inevitable.

And he had to be ready.

I will survive. I will control this. I will find her.

Golden light flickered in affirmation, steady and unyielding against the encroaching shadows.
