Chapter 16 - Team Dynamics

The streets of Lagos were unusually quiet that evening, almost deceptively calm. Elijah, Maya, Obinna, and Lara moved through the city like shadows themselves, checking for residual Demos activity after the last outbreak.

"Stay sharp," Maya whispered, eyes scanning every corner. "Not all of them strike immediately. Some wait… and watch."

Elijah felt the familiar pulse in his chest, golden light flickering beneath his skin. Every shadow, every subtle shift in energy, tugged at him. He had grown more confident in controlling his power, but he also knew the stakes had risen.

"Look alive!" Obinna muttered, rolling his shoulders. "I swear, one of these nights, one of them is gonna jump out, and we're all in trouble if we're not synced."

Elijah nodded, heart steadying as he focused. We have to move as one. No mistakes. No distractions.

Suddenly, a shriek tore through the alley ahead. A Demo had possessed a civilian—Lara's eyes widened. She was already moving to intercept, but the creature was fast, its movements unpredictable.

Without thinking, Elijah surged forward, golden energy radiating outward, stabilizing the possessed person before they could harm anyone else. The Demo's scream dissolved into smoke, leaving the civilian unharmed.

Obinna's jaw dropped. "Man… that was too close. And you just… stabilized her?"

Elijah exhaled, heart still racing. "I had to."

Maya's eyes were sharp but approving. "See? You're improving. But don't forget, we rely on more than just your power. Teamwork is just as critical. Trust us… and we trust you."

Elijah glanced at his teammates. He had always thought power alone would save lives. Now he realized it wasn't just about strength—it was about trust, timing, and coordination. Every misstep could cost someone their life.

The group continued their patrol, moving with quiet precision. Obinna and Lara adjusted instinctively to Elijah's rhythm, Maya leading the formation, the golden pulse of Elijah's Resonance guiding them through the city like a silent beacon.

By the time they returned to the base, Elijah understood something crucial: he couldn't do this alone. His power might be unmatched, but without allies he could trust, he was vulnerable.

And yet, in the shared glances, the silent nods, and the unspoken respect, he saw it—a fragile, growing bond. A team united not just by duty, but by the knowledge that survival depended on each other.

We will face the darkness together. And we will not fail.
