She leaned her back against the cool, painted paneling, slid down an inch, and pressed both palms flat against her chest. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a wild, trapped bird, and for a long moment she simply stood there, listening to her own ragged breathing fill the small space. The silence of the bathroom felt like the only safe place left in the apartment, a small fortress where she could finally stop performing.
"Calm the fuck down, Nina!" she whispered fiercely to her reflection in the steamed mirror. "What is going on with you?! Get a grip!"
